I did a test of ramped slow-mo in FCPX with a short clip I had from the skateplaza. I was messing around with letterboxing as well. I trimmed it to a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. What do you guys think of these clips? One is the letterboxed version and one is the version without letterboxing. I kinda dig the style of the letterboxing, but I feel as though it may be cheesy. I understand that head/board clipping of the subject is an issue.
If you want to do letterboxing you have to plan your shots ahead. Your current letterbox one looks poor because you can't see the board as he approaches the rail.
Yeah, I was just messing around with the footage, but I acknowledged the clipping issue in the OP. The style is probably best-suited for non-action type videos.
not necessarily, it's just that a good amount of the people who shoot action sports then crop it to 2.35:1 don't shoot with the crop in mind, or at least they do a poor job of it. you just have to make sure you have crop bars on your camera so you can get an idea of how to frame while you're shooting, and make sure you shoot wider. i think it's a good way to shoot because it forces you to consider composition much more; the whole centered rider thing doesn't work well with the 2.35:1 crop.
i have a t2i and might want to try the 2.35:1 crop. any idea on how to put crop bars on the camera for this aspect ratio? Saw something about putting a screen protector on the drawing lines for the 2.35:1 but would want that on my camera at all times.
Don't be, its really not a risk at all. Just follow their instructions and copy it to the memory card and install the firmware to your camera and it will work just like normal but with the extra menu. I was afraid it would 'brick' my camera (obviously it didnt), but even if it did screw up your camera you can always load back the original canon firmware through another memory card.
Ya if your going to ramp I would definitely do it in AE its a bit of a learning curve at first but you will get the hang of it and it allows you to get much more precise then you can in FCPX. Also I am not sure why you would letter box that clip? It is already pretty tight framing and you also have a fisheye so I kind of feel like you getting a really wide shot and just cutting it out.
