Possible to hack into a gas pump for free/cheap gas?

They are run by computers so there must be a way to quickly do some work on the little key pad and hack into possibly a administrative mode or some sort of mode that gets youf ree or cheap gas. Anyone ever do this or know how to?

I saw this video on youtube of this former gas station employee and he did it to a pump and the whole day everyone got free gas at that pump and nobody ever told the gas station employees until that night

This would be interesting to experiment with. My guess is that the pricing (and control) of the pumps is ran off of the gas stations computer system. Get into that...

Haha no, not really possible.

Each button on the keypad can only input the integer value assigned to it. So there's no way you can gain access to source code to modify those values.

If you could open up the pump you could wreak havoc, but there's now way thats possible with all the security cameras/other people.

Like stated before you couldn't just type a number sequence and have it change the source code to the number value. What would be interesting is if you could reproduce the magnetic strip of a gas card. Couldn't happen, but it would be cool

sounds slightly illegal.

there is a esso around the corner from my house that always runs out of regular.
when this happens they sell supreme for the same price as regular.
i always make sure to fill right up on those days.

and my car makes JAMMMMMMMMM!

like someone said before there would(most likely) be no way to do this via the the keypad. You might be able to infiltrate the gas stations network via some sort of social engineeering attack to change the prices to $0. An example would possibly be going into the little shop and saying that you need to fax/print something real quick and give them a usb loaded with a trojan. Might work.

I met some guy in sweden who had a card like that, told me he won it. Free gas for 10 years or something.

i had one of those pre-paid cash cards with only about 5 dollars remaining on it. so i went to use up the rest of the card expecting that the pump would shut off after a gallon and a half or so, but it kept going until the tank was full. a couple of days later i went and tried it again, expecting there to be no money on the card at all, but it let me fill up again. i tried it a third time and it declined the card.

Yep. This is an old trick.
When you use a card at the pump the pump charges a dollar to check and see if the card is legit. After this dollar you can pump as much as you want and you wont be charged until later.
So, you can have a card with one buck on it and pump 60 dollars worth of gas.

Seems they have caught on. Recently they have been taking out $15 or $25. Which is nice because I hate when you have a $1 pending when you know it's more like $40.

not always true. A lot of pumps require something like a $50 or $75 minimum balance on things like a debit card just for this reason

yeah the kwik trip next to my house checks $100 dollars, then $75, then $50.. and if none of those work then you can go to their atm

Put gas at night when gas is cold. If you gas up at noon, in hot days, your octane level will go down as it evaporates. Also, gas up with the low flow cuz with the high flow, more air is mixed with your gas and it evaporates.

I used to use this technique in summer.
