Advice on a PC editing build?

I'm going to be building PC in the next couple of weeks and I'm looking for advice. My budget is pretty tight, around $600, so I can't get a quad i7 with a $1000 nvidia quadro graphics card or whatever. Does anyone know anything about building computers? NS is probably not the best site to ask this on, but I'm sure somebody could help a bit. Does this build seem like it will work well?

I'm going to be using AE and Premiere CS6, so I figure I need the Nvidia graphics card (as opposed to a AMD one) for the CUDA acceleration. The CPU is supposed to be really good for multithreaded programs like video editing and encoding, and it has 8 cores and can be overclocked nicely. I'm not sure what power supply I need, I might go for a 600 or 750W one if I need to. The case is really cheap and is supposed to have good airflow (4 120mm fans), but if there are better options out there I'll switch. I'm also going to be using this for a bit of gaming, but I'm sure the 8 core processor and gtx560 will work fine for Tf2 and BF3 (dont need ultra settings and 100+fps or whatever).
Another question, does anyone know if there is an actual difference in the speed of ram? Like 1333 vs 1600 vs 1866 vs 2100+? Also what does the CAS latency and timing mean? Some ram says 9 9 9 24 or something, is that better?


If anyone knows anything about building computers, I'd appreciate it if you gave me some advice (++K), thanks.

also memory, $19.99 for 8gb 1600mHz ram? I'm pretty sure patriot sucks but look at all other manufacturers and you'll see thats not the price you pay for reliable stuff from corsair, g.skill, etc

Good point. Do you know if the speed of it (1333 1600 1866 etc) matters very much in terms of editing? Since they're all pretty much the same price, I assume 1866 or higher would be best, but i'm not sure. Also, do the timings (think thats what its called), ie 9,9,9,24, matter?

timing and rates wont matter unless you overclock.

Don't cheap out on a shit AMD processor if youre on a budget, either save or get the intel that fits your price

It's better to build a well balanced machine with parts that work well together, then to cheap out on something important with hopes of upgrading when budget allows.

Save up. 3770k isn't that bad. Now the 3930k is awesome, I'm so tempted, dat 6-core,but trying to decide if its worth the $300 over the 3820. Only reason I'mnot getting the 3770k is because its z77 (1155) chipset and x79 (2011) chipset is better for editing.

I really don't see what you have against AMD... It's not as good as intel for single threaded things, but its definitely not shit. The intel that fits my price is a dual core i3. I'd much rather get a 6 or 8 core amd.
What about GPUs? Is the gtx560 any good or should I upgrade to say a 660? Ive heard the amd ones (ie 7870) are much better but I want the cuda acceleration.

It's not just about cores, there's a lot more to a processor than just the # of cores (number of instructions a cycle, clock speed, and number of threads per core). I mean if AMD offers 8 cores at sub 200 and intel's quad cores start at 200+ you should realize the AMD is not going to just be "better." Find or budget an i7 QC (hyperthreaded), it will give you 8 virtual cores and crush the AMD. Call me an intel fanboy all you want (I do like some of the AMD gpu's don't get me wrong) but for video editing I believe intel is the processor family to go with.

TL;DR: get a CPU that will last you a while and is the best bang for your buck now so it can last long enough to see a new wave of CPUs come out

Possibly a higher power supply, maybe around 700 just to be safe.

What about for my price range? Is it worth it to invest in a more expensive card (ie gtx660) or should I just go with a cheaper 560 ($140 vs $210)? That is, would a 660 or higher make a significant difference in editing? Or should I just put that money into a better motherboard or ram or case or whatever? (i've decided on the more expensive higher quality Gigabyte 990fx, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128514)
And is 16gb ram really necessary?

The gets 570/580 are baller and cheap. Either way don't cheap out on your processor. 16 isn't but I have 8 now and wish I had 16(will soon). I'm gonna upgrade to 32 soom

Really, any 4xx/5xx/6xx gtx card will help you a ton in premier with the CUDA acceleration. OpenCL isnt bad either, but not as good.

As I stated before, don't cheap out on the processor, fuck amd. Get a i5-3570k or i7-3770k. Those are the best high-end single thread quad cores that will last you a long time. I was going to get the 3770k when I read about the x79 vs z77 chipset, how z77 is better for single thread (gaming) vs multi-thread (video editing). So, i was going to get the 3820 quad core but ended up reading alot about the 3930k 6-core and how much better it would be than a quad core and decided it was worth the extra 200-300 for me. But, for you, on a $600 dollar budget the i5-3570k could work well for you. I read a ton of gamer kids get the i5-3570k since its almost the same as the i7-3770k for gaming, which doesn't exactly mean the same for video editing but it means its a good processor.

Also, something to think about is a ssd boot drive. Even just a 64gb drive for your OS and Adobe would show a difference. Im doing 128 just because I got a deal, but was just going to do 64gb. With a 500gb-1tb data drive paired with the ssd, you're set and its really only an extra 100 bucks.

But really, even waiting a month and saving another 200 bucks would help you step up on this build. I was hesitant for the big upgrade I chose, I didn't think I NEED high end gpu/cpu/ssd but in the end decided it was worth the extra money. Good luck.

I'm really torn on this amd vs intel issue... I think I might just like you said get some more money saved up and get a i5 2500k/3750k

I've been thinking of getting a SSD. How much does 64gb realistically hold? I imagine the OS is like 20 gigs or so? So do I actually get 40gb of space in there for programs and all? Might just get a 120gb for the extra space, plus they're on sale right now for less than $100 (a sandisk one is only $80 on amazon for 128gb)

Yeah in this thread you guys have made it clear that you're intel fanboys and hate amd. I'm just not sure myself if its worth it to spend the extra money on an i5.

Well that's fine, you can ignore our advice if you want. Intel processors are better. I'm not sure why you're so hung up on amd, I thought maybe your reign stupidity was over bubut I'm done trying to give helpful advice to someone who doesn't want it.

I just found this for $220 at microcenter, actually. I assume this will be much better than the i5 for that price and the 8320?

A. I am not an intel fan boy. Intel makes the best processors, period. If anyone is a "fan boy" its you because you're being so fucking stubborn about your shitty AMD processor.

B. I mentioned that gamers used 3770k vs 3930k because games don't even utilized 6 cores, let alone 4. Now, the 3770k will work great for multi thread too but obviously a 6-core 3930k would be better but you obviously cant afford that. You can't afford x79, you wanna spend $600 which means you should go with z77 and a 3770k processor or 3770 (not much cheaper though). AMD is shit and I feel like you're trying to save money, but do you really think an "8-core" processor that costs 170 bucks is going to out perform a high end intel i7 for 220? Dude, no. If you wanna be cheap, get the i5-3570k.

C. Yes I am being an asshole because you're an idiot and won't listen to people who know what they're talking about. Why I am even responding/helping you still is beyond me.
