Did your parents pay for your college and how much did they spend? Was it all or half, just want to know what most families do.

My dad is a prof at my college so I don't pay tuition... But on a cool note all the money my parents did save for college is pretty much mine and I use it on rent/food/fun.

parents + scholarships.

I think school cost me about 30 a year, but I'm in a high paying, high employing major so I'm not too worried about when I get out of school.
As long as I make my college degree useful, I don't think my parents have any issue paying for it.

My sister goes to App State and she's got a couple scholarships and my dad (who works in a big wig federal position in dc) sends her money to spend.

I'm a junior, so I guess they will once I get there

No. Well partially. They paid for me to attend community college-- when I transferred to a four year I took out student loans.

I have loans from my first 2 years, my parents have paid for my final 2 years via savings and cash. My tuition is around $6000 a year I think? $1000 per credit plus fees, at UofT

If i had to pay off the possibility of around $200K in loans, i probably wouldnt even go to college. I could use that money to easily start up a small business and make a profit i could live off of in the 4 years that I would spend at college learning about what i already would be doing.

my parents wouldnt give me $200k to start up my own business, and I probably woud have been disowned if i didnt go to college. Im saying if i had to pay for college completely by myself, i probably would not go, and i would take my chances at building up my own company.

That's awesome. My dad started taking out savings bonds for me when I was born - birthdays, holidays, etc - and it paid for the first 3 years at school

Parents paid for all expenses related to school (books, tuition, meal plan, etc) but now that I am living off campus next year, I have to cover food, gas, housing costs, etc. while they maintain the costs for regular school needs.

My parents stance is that they will cover my education no matter the cost for them .

I know i wouldnt have $200k in my hand, but I would have to pay all the loans off eventually which would be $200k i could have spent elsewhere. Didnt think it would be that hard to comprehend. And I bet i could start a profitable business in under 4 years with $200k. Yeah, maybe I wouldnt make a lot starting out but everyone has to start somewhere.

My parents paid $27 dollars. I paid for the rest in scholarships. So they ended up paying only about 1% of my tuition and books.

that's incredibly selfish. you should think about that. you accept something from someone that you wouldn't pay for yourself..

like mommy putting a $50 turkey on the table for you but you wouldnt pay for a $50 turkey. since it's their hard earned money who cares, right? but nope, not my own money! not worth it lol.

No, I've had to take out loans but it's only around ~$4,000 USD equivalent per year, for 3.5 years for a Bachelor's.

My parents paid for everything first year so I could get my feet under me. Now I get 5k a year which covers most of my tuition (~8 courses).

That said rather than taking out student loans they have been lending me whatever money I don't manage to get together each year. So I have to pay it back, but I don't have to worry about interest or defaulting on loans. Plus they get out of paying taxes on the income so it works out pretty conveniently for both sides.

Yeah, no way. After the housing crisis killed whatever money my parents had tried to save up for paying up college for me and my brother, We both ended up having to spend a little time in Jr. College, saving money, and transferring back in.

Neither of us have extraordinary loan debt, but seeing as I'm probably going back for my masters in a year or 2, and he's in an intensive engineering program, we'll likely accrue plenty more.

Hell ya they did. No way I'd pay out of my own pocket for the garbage food that I eat here hahaha. But ya, I bought new skis so at least they don't have to spend anymore on me for a christmas present :3 Even though I'm only in my first year, I can't see how someone could have a part time job. That's ridiculous. This semester alone I have 6 essays, totaling approximately 32 pages at 12 font Times fucking New Roman doubled spaced (which isn't too bad). Not to mention mid terms and finals. Squeeze as much as you can out of your parents while you can, cause when they're in nursing homes, guess who has to pay for that! Jk, I love my parents and I'm grateful they are putting my through university because it is intense having to pay for that yourself.

No way. They're doing them huge amounts of favors in the long run. Imagine if every dollar you earned while working in college went into saving instead of tuition. Imagine if every dollar you would have paid into loan repayments after school was invested. What if that loan repayment was the difference between clearing the month or carrying a balance on your CC and incurring interest.

There is no benefit to taking cashflow out of your portfolio at its inception. The parents who are paying their kids way through college are doing them a greater favor than most of the kids even realize.

Completely different. I work in private finance and I solicit investments all the times for projecs that I wouldn't invest in personally. The only reason being that tying up 150k in one participation that could (but probably wont) go to 0 is a lot different as .5% of a 30MM portfolio than it would be for someone like me.

My parents have $30k saved for it. So I could go to a state school in cow land, or pay myself some how and go some where cool or the mountains

no. I have faith in myself that i could start my own company and if i had a choice between college and starting my own company, I would not choose college. Of course i'm grateful for my parents saving up the money and paying my tuition, and they would probably disown me if i did not go. Its not selfish at all, its my parents money and im not going to turn down college thats paid for. If i had a choice, i think i could gain more out of starting my own business and learning from real world experience than going to college, but my parents think otherwise and thats why im going to college. Selfish, not at all, difference of opinion, yes.

get a job as a house boy at a sorority cleaning dishes and shit. It was pretty easy and reliable. And with loans, make sure you get a degree that will allow you to pay them back

anyone who claims 200k for undergrad is either a liar or a liar. Dental school will put me about $300,000 in total debt. In state undergrad left me ~$55,000 in debt.

if you spend as much on bachelors in undergrad as i do while earning a DMD youre an absolute retard but more likely a liar.

my parents bought a condo for me to live in while I go to school. I usually pay tuition, and pay for books, food, phone, etc. My grandparents set up a college fund that pays some tuition...

You do realize at those rates depending on what your parents are paying your loan after you graduate is about 1000$ a month? Regardless of what major you have its tough to find a job and even with a job thats an insane amount of money...o by the way at the price you won't pay it off untill your 40, I went through this years ago and it just wasnt worth it, ended up going to the school where my dad works and just paying room and board still around 15+ k a year, I pay about 300-350 a month in loans now, and luckly my parenrs helped me out by taking loans too and.paying around the same,

My parents don't have loans. They have saved money + contributions from grandparents.
My major has a 100% employment rate out of my college with an average starting salary of 105 a year, so I am confident that I will be able to find a job.

My parents don't know that I plan to pay them back with some checks (nor will they probably accept them), but it is my way of thanking them for helping me through school. I like to think that I am very well off in many ways, and believe that hard work has helped me get here.
