There is no logic to your argument. Getting on a lift without a pass does not hurt anybody, seeing as the lift is run by a company, which can deal with small system bypasses. Besides, how much more power does it take to transport one person?

Stealing skis which belong to an individual is morally wrong. People work to pay for what they buy, and if your skis get stolen, two things happen. 1) you can't ski & 2) you have to work more again

Don't compare personal loss to a company's potential profit loss.

It was in response to the rich paying there fair share post. I do not encourage people to poach or any of the things you suggested. However there is a difference between poaching a lift and stealing somebodies stuff. The resort can still use the lift for other guests, but the person that is out of snowboard is screwed.

Same reason people justify sealing from Walmart's and large companies, compared to stealing from a kid. They wont notice any profit loss if you don't have to money to spend on lift tickets anyways, but stealing skis/boards can ruin someones whole winter.

You are all missing the point. Just because you've decided to get crazy vigilante style up in this fucker, doesn't mean that you can go and appoint degrees of stealing. Stealing is stealing, whether you steal from a large company or you steal from one single person. Looking at your logic through the prism of law, you would have to beat up quite a few people every day, however, doing that is futile since all of you either don't respect the law, or are too stupid to understand it. The fact that you are all so ready to break the law in response to someone breaking the law is just pathetic. Why is it that you fail to comprehend that assaulting someone for stealing is just as immoral as stealing?

Since I don't steal, I guess I would never be in a situation where any of you would attack me, but I just wish that one of you one day mistook me for a thief and attacked me, fucking dream scenario right there.

All the kids on here saying that stealing someones skis is not worse then other types of theft are probably spoiled self entitled punks. Anyone who dosent get their skis from mommy and daddy and actually work their fucking asses off to build the perfect set up knows the gravity of the crime.

I dont steal either, ah fuck I guess Ive downloaded some music before. I agree that the e-harassment is stupid and won't accomplish anything, but I do think it is right that the kid lost his job, and I would like to see him banned from all the ski resorts in his area. I think if somebody has to throw a punch to get their stuff back that is fine. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if somebody breaks into your house and is stealing stuff you are allowed to shoot them, right?

Off topic (and no offense to you Americans out there), the fact that you can shoot someone who is on your property is straight up retarded. I mean, how the hell is a tv or a stereo more valuable than a life, whomever's life it may be? But, back on topic, resorting to violence in retaliation for theft is slightly hypocritical. You are saying that one moral injustice deserves another- an eye for an eye and so on. Surely we have evolved to such a point where we can rely on the law to get things done (especially in this situation where the law HAS worked) without automatically going beast mode and kicking someones head in.

Not sure if sarcastic or not but yes, it's very relevant. He's trying to convey the message that maybe NS could have throttle back and just let this whole thing run it's course without tossing any vinegar in the wounds.

At the end of the day, kids will be kids, and packs of dogs will prowl. This kid got what he deserved and NS + the skiing/boarding community flexed its muscle and really made an example of what could happen to you should you be caught stealing gear. Much like how COC posted that poachers fake pass on Facebook. Hopefully the example that was made will stand and detere gear theft.

So stupid. There is no way a person without a pass can ever ski like someone who has paid their money. You might get one quick free ride on a chair so you can do some back country stuff. And if you want to hike a fucking park you shouldnt have to pay. One more person sitting around won't make a difference. Awful argument.

Stealing skis is the lowest of the low. There is seriously nothing worse in the realm of theft.

If you want to get money from a bank you need to bring a gun and commit armed robbery. If you want to steal something from a car/house you need to commit a b+e. If you want to not pay for skis you can 99% of the time walk off with your choice of free ones you see sitting outside at any mountain.

The only possible deterrent is the communal outrage towards those who do this. Everyone knows it could happen to them and that is why no one would dream of doing it (even someone who might see a fat wallet on someones front seat of an unlocked car in the parking lot and open the door and grab the cash isn't going to steal skis from outside the lodge.)


All things aren't considered equal when it comes to stealing. Stealing a few beers from a party you are about to leave to go to another just isn't the same as breaking into your roomates room and taking his PS3 to a pawn shop now is it?

As stupid as this kid is, I kind of feel bad for him...one stupid fucking idea at 18 yrs old and now his life is fucked up for years to come. I am in no way condoning his behavior or actions, I just feel bad that his sense of judgement was so lacking that he felt he should do something as idiotic as what he did, and now his life is fucked. what an idiot.

It is truly mind boggling how you keep insisting on applying your own degrees of what stealing is. It is not for you to decide which is worse, the law will deal with anyone who is caught stealing. Within the law there are certain degrees of stealing, and therefore it will exert the appropiate punishment in accordance with the crime committed. It is just so unbelievably stupid to see how you try to pass of your own assessment of what is worse as something with even a shred of legitimacy.

But in the spirit of subjective opinions on degrees of stealing, it is pretty crazy that for you, stealing skis reigns supreme as the worst. How about stealing a bag from an old lady, or money/property from a poor family? You cannot honestly think that stealing equipment from well off kids beats that? And your argument about how the accessibility of committing the crime has a bearing on how bad it is is just plain retarded. By that logic it's not as bad to steal a car that has the keys in, as one you have to break into, and that's really, really stupid.

Your moral also seems ruff around the edges when you are ready to commit one injustice in response to another, and then go on to say that it is okay to poach, which by most would be considered immoral. You're all over the place, maybe you should try and get your arguments straight.

I understand what jibberino is saying, but like you said earlier I guess I don't trust the justice system, and think that stealing should be punished more harshly.

Nah, they are called "lift tickets" you don't need one to buy a 5 dollar coffee in the lodge so I don't see how you need one to hike a park. If you want to hike up the mountain in the woods near a ski resort you can. What if someone whats to hike up the back side of the mountian and take one run down? WHat about people who ski when a resort is closed for the summer?

I would be against it if I skiied park and there were bummy punks in it on snowboards who didn't pay getting in my way mind you. But not philosophically.

And the dude compared that to stealing skis from outside the lodge something which is worse than robbing a bank (and everyone on here will agree with that.)

Loopholes exist in society. If you play adult hockey you'd know that goalies don't every pay for icetime even though skaters do. If I wanted to borrow a guys pads and get rubber shot at me I could play pickup for free and save the 5-10 bucks but if I want to skate I have to pay. Just like if I don't want to use the chairlifts I should be able to ski at a ski resort for free but if I want a lift up the hill it costs money.

Its only a problem of hoards of bums start doing it.

So what your saying is we should be allowed to shoot pucks at people in the park without passes?....Actually the reason that they allow goalies to play for free is because it is (usually) harder to get goalies for pickup and they are a crucial part of the game.

Also people saying that it is okay not to pay for a lift ticket are idiots. If more and more people stop paying for tickets, the hills will be less profitable which will equal shittier budgets (possibly for park features and snow making) for next season and for smaller hills such as the one I ski at could result in them having to close down for good. Tell me how that would be any better than someone losing their gear...

If you ski a groomed run, you are paying for the groomer. If you are inbounds the resort is liable so you are paying for their insurance. Ski patrol patrols all inbound terrain so if you fuvjed yourself even if you didn't have a ticket they'd be called. All little things like that are covered under the 'lift pass'.

It's not mind boggling. Poaching a resort is actually trespassing as defined by law, not stealing. Stealing skis is theft. The latter is subject to greater punishment when caught.

As for the subjectivity of each case, you have to understand who each crime affects. The rest of the discussion here, other than the kid actually being charged with theft, is hypothetical so of course we can apply our own degrees of severity. Poaching hurts no single individual. It merely bypasses a negligible amount of a resort's profit from concessions. Usually around $50. For each case of ski/snowboard theft, however, a specific individual has lost at least $500. So not only is this subjectively worse, it's CLEARLY worse by quantitative measures.

This is all in response to your original argument that we're hypocrites for shaming ski theft and turning a blind eye to poaching. I see where you're coming from because, yes, they are both illegal. The legal spectrum, however, has a much greater scope than you give it credit for in the case of subjectivity, quantity, and due punishment.

Actually, I never called you hypocrites for shaming theft, I called some people hypocrites (I can't recall if you're one them) for wanting to punish one crime with another, by physically assaulting people who steal. That is immoral, and illegal, at least where I come from.

So, what if someone poaches 11 days in a row, thus costing the lift company/camp 550 dollars, is it then both subjectively and quantitatively worse?

I do recognise that this discussion is extremely hypothetical, but I'm responding to people who blatantly encourage violence and make statements saying that stealing skis is worse than bank robbery. That, to me, is shameful.

There is obviously also a cultural gap here, both in terms of the subjective views on the matter, but also in terms of actual laws. Like I mentioned earlier, some things that are considered self defense/protecting your property in the USA, would be considered murder or assault where I come from. That fact in itself will often create wildly differing views on the matter.

I don't know what the laws are in the state, but you can only be charged with petit larceny in NY if you did this one time. I don't know if he stole multiple items, but if it exceeds 1000 dollars he'll be charged with grand larceny at least in the fourth degree (if he was in NY per say)

No, 11 days of poaching would be neither subjectively or quantitatively worse. Personal theft will almost always be subjectively worse than trespassing in this case. The only way I could think of it being worse would be a long term mass organization of ticket fraud. As for quantity you have to take net worth into account. Let's assume we're talking about Copper Mtn. which is worth at least tens of millions of dollars. The AVERAGE owner of skis/snowboard on the mountain would AT MOST be worth 1% percent of this. Even that is pushing it, but I'll stick with the number for the sake of argument. This means one person would have to poach at least 1000 days for it to be on the same level of magnitude.

As for your argument against assault, I think you have to be aware that statements like "This is the worst crime I can think of" are clear hyperbole. In the same sense many of the "I'd beat the shit of this dude" comments are in many cases desensitized internet nonsense. I'd wager that the majority of NSers, if they could get a hand on a ski thief, would go for a citizens arrest. This is well within the law and in many cases allows tolerance for a bruise or two. In reality this would take place in a high traffic area, which wouldn't allow for a solid beating. These comments are more expressions of emotion than practical threats. I know I'd WANT to beat the shit out someone who stole from me, but in most cases I CAN'T.

Isn't it to easy just to write all the comments of as "hollow" threats? Are people less liable for statements made on the internet? Is a threat made on the internet, in a legal sense, not just as illegal/immoral as one uttered in "real" life, or personally delivered?

It's all good and fine that you can school me in the ways of American law, but my quarrel is mainly with the stupidity and callousness in the above statements. What I am so surprised by is the fact that people, whether or not their statements are "internet" statements, seem to think that violence is a good way to solve a problem. It just seems really ignorant, not to mention hypocritical. However I do admit that expecting anything different from NS is just me overestimating the general age/intelligence on this site.

My arguments are straight. I'll refrain from telling you what a bitch you are and clear it up just to help.


Stealing skis is worse than robbing a bank or little old lady because it is so easy. No bank will give you money unless you bring a gun with you and thus risk an armed robbery charge. You can walk away with skis and pretend they are yours. Furthermore it affects the entire community when everyone on NS who doesn't lock their skis up when they go into the lodge hears stories about it happening they have to think about changing their conduct at the mountain. Skiiers collectively wish to be able to leave their shit unlocked after runs and all they can do to protect themselves is to overwhelmingly shame anyone who breaks this code.

Poaching- ski companies have complete domain over the lifts. You can't ride them without paying. But the entire mountain isn't under their control. A mom picking her kid up can go in the lodge and have a piss without buying a lift ticket. And someone can snowshoe up a trail next to the ski lifts. Sorry fella but not using the lifts and hiking the parks falls into that domain. Who are you to decide how much a kid owes a ski mountain if he doesn't ride their lifts. Are they offering him a cheaper hike only pass? If so he should buy that. If not its a grey area.


If you don't think all things theft related are equal you are a moron. Pocketing a few beers from a party you are about to leave is not the same as going into someones room and taking their DVDs before you bounce. How about drugs...if your rob someone for a pound of weed its part of the game they can't call the cops its part of the risk they take selling drugs and why its profitable. Your relationship to the person you jacked is what determines how dick a move it was to rob them (if its some kid you hate its completely different than if its a close boy you jack for drugs.)

I can see what you are saying if it is on public land, but many resorts are on private land OWNED by the resort. You are lucky some people pay those ticket prices because without it there would be no park. I do believe, they could refuse to let a nonpaying person to use the restroom, but that would be stupid business practices for them and would piss a lot of people off, so not worth it.
