How to quit my job?

so i live in australia and am moving over to canada in 5 days, cant fucking wait! the last 4 weeks or so i have been working a pretty shitty ass job to make up a little extra money for my trip and never told my boss i was going away. he has given me shifts for everyday this week plus saturday and sunday. i plan on getting shitfaced saturday and sunday before i go away so i dont intend on working the weekend. now that the time has arrived for me to go away, should i tell my boss or not? and if so what should i tell him?

serious question, i know its not the best idea to ask NS due to maturity levels but i thought id give it a shot. inb4 jokes about peeing in his butt and taking a dump on his doorstep.

Are you planning on returning to Australia? If so you should tell your boss and quit. You should have told him a week ago that you were doing this so he could plan. How would you feel if someone just bailed on some shifts the day before and never show up again. Now you gotta cover their ass cause they fucking suck.

Let your boss know so you can prepare. If you are never returning to Australia then it doesnt fucking matter. But you still should mention it.

Pretty common gesture to give your employer two weeks notice before leaving, instead of leaving them hanging. You might as well just not show up - its a little late to "quit" now.

I pretty much just did the same thing working in a restaurant and I'm going to the alps in a week for the season.

If you'd posted this beforehand I'd have given you better advice but what I did was I told them I wasn't going away, then 2 weeks before (to give to weeks notice) I told them I'd just been offered a job in France.
I handed in my two weeks notice and basically said it was unexpected and I was sorry for leaving but the opportunity was to good to pass up.

I don't know how notice periods work where you are but next shift hand in your notice with an official letter of resignation and say your last day of work will be friday, or ask for a day shift saturday as your last shift so you can still get hammered sat night and on sunday.

Also offer to help find someone to cover for your last shifts that you're going to miss.

Realistically it would be easier if you'd handed your notice in advance to make it easier for them to find a replacement for you.

Just don't let them make you feel guilty about it, fuck it it was a shitty job and now you get to move to CANADA WOOOO.

If i told him earlier he would have just stopped giving me shifts and i really need the money. To be honest its a pretty meaningless job and the turnover rate is pretty high. There's already been about 3 people just leave without notice. And if ur wondering my job is to go to shopping centres and corporate buildings and such and put up xmas decorations. My boss is a pretty chill guy but he isn't very legit so im worried he just won't pay me if i bail on him

Don't you have to give a two weeks notice? I would just tell your boss politely that you're leaving. There's not much he can really do if you're leaving anyway.

When I quit my first job I didn't realize you were supposed to put your two week notice in. Granted, I also hated the job and the owner (it was a restaurant) so...


I left a nice (not so nice) note on the owners desk. I said I would come back in two weeks for the money she owed me (she failed to pay me for the first 6 weeks and only gave me half of those wages) and my apron that I washed. She was surprised how truthful I was when I left so she bribed me with $100 dollars that were for tips and asked me to come back during the busy season. She was really nice, telling me that I was one of her best workers. That's kinda the opposite of what I was accustomed to, but she knew that she fucked me over too many times.

So I learned from this, try and be honest when you leave a job. I recently quit my job at a hot springs resort with the same attitude (but I gave my two week notice) and the same exact thing happened.

OP just be honest with your boss and admit your ignorance of common quitting morals. You might get another (possibly better) job from them in the future. Never burn your bridges!

For full time and part time work we need to give a 2 week notice but for casual u don't have to give any notice. Its ok ill tell him today, seriously about 90% of the people i work with r backpackers and/or immigrants and have the same attitude and im sure he that he somewhat expects in a way given that this is his 19th year of doing it. I no i didn't go about it in the best way but i seriously think that some of u r over thinking this situation. I no ur trying to help and i appreciate that but its pretty hard to explain the situation im in. Thanks for ur help :)

Its irritating, but I did it to a couple of employers when I was like 19-20 years old so I can't really judge. But in hindsight yes it is a dipshit move.

Hate on me more please. Would have been a huge waste of time for both of us if i told him a week after he employed me that i was quitting and he wouldnt have given me shifts so that was pretty much pointless. I spoke to him today and told him i was going away and that i only just found out and he was cool with it as long as i finish my shifts. I told him i won't be able to do Saturday as i will be too busy and again he said that's fine. I also told a few friends who r looking for jobs that the position will be available and passed on his contacts. Be honest with urself, u probably would have done the same or something similar if u were in this situation

Giving 2 weeks notice would have completely defeated the purpose of applying for the job. I would have worked 2 shifts, made about $200 and would have spent that with the remaining 2 weeks i had left in the country. I was employed as a casual so really he would have just employed someone else as soon as i told him because he didn't have to give me 2 weeks work. And i wouldn't say i lucked out because he doesn't care, its more because of the nature of the job that he would expect shit like this to happen and not give a shit because he employ somebody else just as easily. Majority of the people working there are only doing it until they find a better job then they too will quit and start their new job immediately.

It couldn't hurt just to say tell your boss that "hey I might be quitting in a week or so".   For all you know he didn't have someone lined up to fill in your spot right away.  Even if you don't like your boss, it would be thoughtful to still warn him.

If OP had started a thread like "hey how can I earn some $ to ski before I leave in 3 weeks" the normal replies (not rude ones since she has a pink name) would be to the effect of get a shit job and quit.

OP talked to the boss and made whatever excuse she could to not add insult to injury. I see no wrong doing.


I was in this exact position once. I was waiting for my paperwork to be processed at the job I wanted right after college. Since I was right out of college I was flat broke. This was unnacceptable and my parents made me get a job pronto. Instead of pussyfooting around jobhunting I immediately took the first job that contacted me after applying which was selling verizon fios door to door.


When my paper work went through and it was time to get the job I wanted I quit (even though they had just promoted me and wanted to send me on a soliciting business trip etc etc.) And like the OP probably does I felt a little sad and guilty quitting even though it was an obvious pyramid scam.


Should the OP aloligize to you're stupid fucking ass because she has to work to earn money?

This job wouldn't have wanted 2 weeks notice they'd have told you peace out.

They ran the office (pryamid scam) in an exploitative way. Basically doing whatever to make the place appear professional when it was really a bunch of kids knocking on doors. Keeping up those appearances was their top priority. (So when you went into the room for teambuilding exercises and training stuff every morning/evening you couldn't talk about what happened during the day field stories were banned feeding you stories of how you'd end up opening your own office etc etc.)

"Door to door" marketing isn't a 2 weeks notice type of job.

And I didn't make excuses I told my boss that I was leaving to be a substitute teacher and my paperwork went through.

These days its hard for kids to get summer jobs. Lying about not having to go back to college in the fall is one of the only ways for college kids to get the jobs because if you don't the boss will be like "I got to cori you and then train you for 3 weeks and then you'll only be working for a month or so until you leave."

yea ok lets say i told him 2 weeks ago.

i would have ran out of money because i had no work. i would have wasted his time for going through an interview process (wasnt much of an interview really. applied for the job and was told 6 hours later to start work in 2 days).

that then means i have to cancel my plans overseas, such as the room mates and accommodation i already have organised, the friends and family i told i would visit, the employer i had an interview with when i got there, tell my friends i was living with that i have to move back in after they have already organised another one of my friends to move in.

OR

i live off my friends and family for 2 weeks like a scab and leave overseas on a bad note that will never want them to talk to me again, get overseas and tell my friends that i have no money until i start work so i would have to freeload off of them for another 2 weeks. live the next month or so repaying the people i owe money to and catch up on rent.

BUT INSTEAD

i told my boss i was leaving, he didnt really care, he gets a new employee in no time at all because sydney has a huge population of students who have just finished school and looking for any work they can get and also has a pretty big tourist population with backpackers who are looking for work as well and again will be looking for anything that they can get that requires no skills, experience or even an understanding of the english language. i get paid enough money for me to finish up rent, and pay rent for the next 3 weeks overseas.

i understand it was a dick move but no matter how i handled the situation it would have had a negative impact. trust me i did consider many options before taking this job and following this path but i chose this because it would result in the least negative impact.
