Should I even lift?

I'm considering throwing small lift on my 4runner. I'm not sure if it would be cool or a waste of money that I'd regret. Mainly just to soften the suspension a bit, no serious off roading mostly just blasting around in the snow, fire roads and muddy fields but I cant tell if it would be neat or if I'd become "That douche with the lifted truck that blast the RPMs unnecessarily high so you can hear his shitty exauste" that everyone hates or if it can be done tastefully.

I say go for it. I have 5.5 inches of lift on my Bronco and am running 37's underneath it. Just try and go as big as tire as possible without any rubbing while cornering.

fuck yea. 4runners are the best.
got a '97 in white and a '00 in black. both man-tranny.

personally i wouldnt lift it because the clearance is more than enough for me and i think the car is already pretty top heavy. that being said, it looks sick as fuck lifted and if you have a reason to (rock crawlin or whatever) then go for it!!

the 80's bodies look sweet lifted especially since you can take the shell off, but personally i think the newer ones like yours look a little silly with a lift since they're still very functional cars vs. more novelty offroad vehicles

Secondly: if you are going to lift you've got to do it right. This means new wardrobe, new eating stuff, and even the way you talk has to change.


New Wardrobe: Throw away anything over a Large as this bitching lifestyle requires you to wear the tightest clothes possible. The shorter the better. Secondly, you have to wear everything that says Muscle Pharm on it. Its what real lifters do. Grab a tribal tat or two and then make some motherfucking cutoffs.

gears are generally pretty easy, not sure specifically on a Toyota, but it just involves swapping out differentials. If you do, you will want a locker on the rear, possibly front as well permitting funds.

but that raises the question, will you even lock your diff?

just do a small lift on 33s. it wont hurt your acceleration bad and it will look good and give you a bit more clearance and stuff

An OME (old man emu) lift, around 3 inch lift, will be your best bet.

in a classic ford it sure as fuck is, hour job for a rear end (yes I realize BOTH front and rear have to be changed, and the front is more difficult) iv only ever changed a rear end. my dad's track gears are 486 posi, then he's got a set of 310s for the highway, theyre screamers. Now I realize this is a Toyota we are talking about, but I can't imagine it's much worse.

I'm hoping once it's all paid off then what I was spending on a payment I can spent doing things to it/ with it.

I do miss going fast and taking corners hot though.

A Detroit in the rear is the way to go. What motor do you have in it right now? Gear swaps are nice but definitely take some work. I put 5.29s in my truck and 4.88s in my 4Runner.

I'm working on my 4Runner, too... Mine's '90, and I'm chopping the wheel wells and putting Bushwacker fender flares on it, I've got 33.5" TSLs and will be putting a Detroit e-locker in the back with some Fox shocks in the front. You can really make a decent off-road rig without putting a lift on a vehicle. As someone mentioned already, 4Runners can be tippy, especially with lifts. Unless you're looking to do a lot of off-roading (rock crawling type shit, not splashing in mud puddles), I'd recommend looking into doing other modifications first. I've been in two rolled 4Runners in my day, hah.

best look for smaller trucks enless you plan on doing some hard core wheelin. fullsize trucks look bets with 4 inch on 35s. thats what i got on my cummins

Ah yes, I understand that. Once you get to that point in modifying a vehicle, there's no going back... And you NEVER get anywhere near what you dump into a an off-road vehicle when you sell it. Lifts are removable, so I get why you want to go that route. I definitely wouldn't go higher than 3", though, and I agree with whomever suggested the OME kit.

I'm used to working on older rigs (80s and early 90s Yotas), so chopping wheel wells is usually one of the first things to happen (since many of them are rusted anyway). Yours is quite pretty! I will say, though, that chopping the wheel wells is far less rugged than it sounds. The fender flares make it look like no cutting ever happened, and it gives you a LOT more room for bigger tires.
