Going another year without Twintips

Ok, so here's the deal, last year was my first year skiing park, so I didn't bother getting twintips in case I didn't enjoy it. I had loads of fun and by the end of the season could 90 a box and do sloppy 3's, so this year I was looking forward towards getting some Chronics. Unfortunately that kind of fell through and I don't have the money to afford them.

So, right now I have a pair of Salomon Tornado's from 2010 that I rode last year and a pair of 150 CM Volkl RTM Jr's from a few seasons ago. Selling them to make money is out of the question because my parents don't believe in Internet transactions, and I already had to fight to keep my dad from giving away the RTM's to my cousin who won't grow into them for a few more years.

I will likely use the RTM's for park because they are lighter and less likely to catch the tails in the snow if I end up switch compared to the tornado's. I'm 5'7 so they are pretty small for me though. Will I be able to progress much more with just these?

Fuck man, I had a pair of 159 K2 Domains that I just gave away. I would have sent them to out of the goodness of my heart because I really feel for your situation.

I would go with the skis that you intend to though, mostly because of your statement that they will be less likely to catch than the others. YES, you will be able to progress, on any set of skis there is that option, but you most likely will not be able to progress as much as you would be able to with a pair of twin tipped skis. You have some limiting factors such as (I'm assuming) a non-center mount, not being able to ride switch with ease, etc. Go for it though, if you're having fun then who is to say that you can't ride park without park skis, is my point getting across?

what do you mean your dad doesn't believe in internet transactions?

get some twintips.  used ones are cheap, just do it, it's the only way to go.

You can find some beat up park skis for pretty cheap. I would so whatever you can to save up for a used pair. It will make a huge difference.

thanks for the reply, I intend to continue doing park no matter what skis :)

I figured I would still be able to progress. Hopefully I outgrow both pairs of skis this year so my parents will have the motivation to chip in on some new ones, their general rule is to only give me money if it is necessary.

I'm actually 16, and yes my dad doesn't want me to buy skis from Newschoolers. Already had to do a bit of coaxing to convince him park skiing wasn't going to make me a "aerial skiing hooligan" as he refers to mostly anyone with a pair of twintips.

I have a pair of 160 Volkl Karma's from a few years ago that are just sitting around. I'll send you them for whatever the shipping is + $50. If you're interested, PM me. They'd be good skis to throw around for a season until you can get your own and they're stiff like the skis you're used to being on.

seems to me like you're probably going to be going through a lot of skis in the coming years, so it won't matter too hard. if you start skiing all the time, many times a week, getting pretty good, time to start convincing your parents that some park skis are worth the investment. but for now, you can just mess around on the skis that you have, and when you grow right out of them, get some real park skis that can hopefully last you a little while.

also, the rtm line came out last year, i'm not sure how you were skiing on them a few seasons ago.

Search around the web in the spring for some deals. Most companies blow out their equipment at half price, you can find pairs of skis for 200-300 a set. Those will be the best deals you can find, unless a company sponsors you of course.

Definitely take a look at Surface skis, during the summer they sell their last year's equipment at 60% off. Super legit products as well as a super legit company. Hope this helps.

It might sound crazy, but I personally wouldn't start someone out skiing park if they didn't have park skis.  They are an essential piece of equipment.  If you're going to learn to slide rails on skis that aren't even close to center mounted, you're going to develop bad habbits.  If I'm teaching someone to ski park, the first trick they learn is 180, followed by rail/box slide to switch, which you're essentially forced to skip.

List both pairs of your skis on craigslist.  Your parents don't believe in internet transactions, but craigslist transactions are very easy to regulate and handle in person.  That should give you enough to buy a pair of inexpensive park skis and bindings at a local shop and it will dramatically increase your rate of progression.

Look on ebay or the outlet sections of sites like evogear and backcountry fore cheap skis. At 16 you should be able do some odd jobs and count your pennies to get some skis.

I'm totally interested, but as you may have guessed my parents aren't really crazy about stuff like this. I've looked into it before (found some old Invaders for like $80 on ebay last year) and was totally able to afford them on my own, but my parents said no. Once I get my license in the spring they will probably loosen up a bit but until then I'm pretty much stuck with what I have.

Clearly your Dad has had a bad experience with "park rats".

Tell your Dad not to tar everyone that skis park with the same brush. Yes, there are a few people on most resorts that are ignorant/arrogant towards people that ski on directional skis or "gapers", but for the most part, most people that ski in the park are chill people and will let you get on with whatever you're doing.

I might have a pair of invaders I bought years ago (I can't remember if my little brother took them or not). They're mounted with Rossignal Scratch bindings at dead center. If they're still in my possession I'll happily donate them to your cause. I'll PM you tonight.

Like I've said before, I would absolutely love to buy/accept a pair of skis free/cheap but my parents just aren't on board with it (if they were I would have some by now and we wouldn't be here). This thread was mostly just to ask about progressing without twin tips.

They would probably immediately ask me where I bought them, I'm pretty much the only one in my family who is crazy about skiing. Even if I got to keep them I would probably be in some trouble unless someone can fake it as some kind of contest.

I'm really thankful for the offers guys, but I honestly think it is just going to end in more trouble then good. My parents are great and all, but wouldn't you be a bit sketched out if your kid received a random shipment of skis from out of the blue? I'll most likely end up with some twin tips by the end of this season anyways, and can wait until then.

OP progressing without twin tips in the park is going to be very difficult, shit you are not going to be able to do like even a fs 270 out without eating it. You need twin tips otherwise you're really not going to be park skiing if you can't even land switch.

I'm hoping after you get 12 pairs of free skis in the mail from fellow NS'ers, your dad's prejudices against Park skiers will change drasticly.



BTW, i learned 540's on alpine skis without ever catching my tails, so it's not completely hopeless if u don't have twins, but it's a dangerous gamble.

Alright, I just showed my dad this thread. He has realized how dedicated I am to this, and has agreed to take me around to some local shops to look for skis for Christmas! Thanks for the replies guys, I'm stoked that you guys were able to help me get some skis. I'm definitely thankful for all the offers, +k to you guys for offering to help out, and I'm fairly certain that probably changed his opinion a bit on Park Skiers.

Being someone who spends much of their time on the mountain I have seen what happens when people use gear for activities that far exceed what it was designed to do. OP i have some unfortunate news, your dad is a huge toolbag and is the reason why snowboarders dislike skiiers. if you are still a cute kid you should consider trying to get adopted by someone.
