idk just seems like a shit situation overall.
17 year old kid isn't really drunk, but crashes his car with his friend and ends up killing him. Friend's parents don't want to see him in jail for the sake of it, but something has to be done.
While I don't support religion, at least it will help straighten the kid out. Much rather go to church for 10 years than be in prison for 10
How is forcing someone to attend religious services in any way legal under the constitution? Please, give me a legitimate answer and not some pseudo bullshit opinion of yours that avoids the question.
It really sucks for this kid, if an appeal go through what happens to him? Jail? There's no doubt that the sentence violates regulation but I wouldn't even fight it considering the alternative.
Nobody said church is "bad." That is not what is being argued here. You simply CAN NOT force someone to attend church legally. I don't care what you think you can "warp," it's still fucking illegal. You are the dumbest motherfucker on this website by far.
"A way to learn morals" is not a legitimate sentence for a crime. If that's what the judge wants the kid to learn, he can give him community service hours. He can't force him to attend church. What if the kid was Jewish? What if he was Muslim? What if he was a fucking atheist? It is NOT legal. Get this through your fat fucking head.
athiesm is not a religion, its just a term for someone who believes in no spiritual existence. and community service hours, yah just pick up shit on the road. im not saying that he can learn morals any other way, but going to church is certainly a cheaper and much less sever penalty than any other punishment he could have been given.
Well it seems like the kid goes to church anyway. There are other parts of the sentence that make a lot more sense.
then there is this quote "raises legal issues because of (the separation of) church and state," University of Oklahoma law professor Randall Coyne told the Tulsa World.... or it's against his first amendment rights.
This sentence doesn't seem wrong to me it just seems silly. Obviously a judge sentencing someone who doesn't go to church to go to church would be blatantly wrong but the kid does so it just seems silly.
I have to commend the parents of the kid who was killed though. Takes a lot of strength to forgive the kid responsible and realize they don't want two kid's lives to be thrown away.
I think picking up trash on the side of the road/helping underprivileged families would teach you a shit load more about morals and values than being forced to sit in church and listen to some idiot talk for an hour about something you may or may not believe in. However, at the end of the day, it does not matter one single bit what you believe, because this is still not legal, will be appealed, and the kid will win.
alright fine. and i take you have never done any community service before, just a bunch of people smoking and sitting around and occasionally poking a piece of trash.
Maybe by the time he's 26 he will have moved on and won't feel the need to be forced to attend church every week? It is one thing to make a choice to attend church and practice religion, but to be forced to go for the next 10 years is insane.
No, I have not picked up trash on the side of the road. You would be correct in that assessment. However, I've spent a lot of time (not forced or required, by the way) helping a local organization who packages and distributes groceries to low income families in SE Michigan, and I can tell you that to me, it is much more rewarding than sitting on a bench for an hour listening to some dude's opinions on the world.
It is unconstitutional, but I doubt the kid will ever appeal it. If I were him I'd be extremely grateful this was my sentence compared to what my actual sentence would be if the kid's parents hadn't said they didn't want him to go to prison. I feel like if he were to appeal the sentence it would almost be like spitting in the face of the family of the kid that died because they're the ones that got him this sentence in the first place and kept him out of jail.
He goes to church anyway, so whats the big deal here? This sounds like a very case specific sort of thing, and its not like judges are going to all of a sudden start forcing every criminal to go to church, so chill out.
So and underaged kid drives under the influence and crashes causing his friend to die, and his punishment is 10 years probation and going to church? Thats just not right.
I thought about posting this, but the arguement against satanic gatherings would be that their views do not coincide with the practices that government encourages to make society safer.
That being said, the punishment is ridiculous and just plain stupid.
But the logistics are the same. The government CAN NOT force someone to practice a religeon. Does no one remember why America exists in the first place?
