Genetics Help (again)

So I have a few problems due tomorrow for genetics. I have a general idea how to do them but I just wanted to see if I can get more detail and help. The answers have to be specific and detailed.

1.) You are trying to determine if over0expresion of a hox-gene XAR leads to developmental defects. How would you construct a study to determine this?

2.) You have 2 suspects who have left DNA from blood at the crime scene. What technique might you use to determine which suspect was actually at the crime scene?

3.) You are doing an experiment to test how a steroid affects gene expression when used to treat cancer. You need 2 different ways to identify changes in gene expression after treatment. What methods will be used and how will you design your experiment?

Like I said i have a general idea what to do but I need some more help. Any help is awesome.

Don't have time too much about this but if you have a general idea you can go into more details for yourself.

1. I'd conduct a case-control study where the cases are the affected patients with the deformity and the control group would be unaffected family members. Why? Because you it's relatively easy/cheap and you can check for alternative genes expressions at the same time.

2. Check microsatellite DNA by DNA sequencing. It's more judicially valid compared to single nucleotide polyphormisms and requires fewers studied areas of DNA to confirm a positive match.

3. Hmm. If I were you I'd do a little research on this one. My suggestions without contemplating it alot would be to examine the concentration of the expressed protein and possibly use clinical outcome as basis for comparison.

What a worthless pos your teacher is. Instead of asking a question that broadens your mind, he makes you go through the motions of the scientific process and having you just look up answers just as busy work.

How about this for a take home question.

What would happen to the human body if all the DNA and RNA was magically removed.

For # 3 you should be looking for a specific protein or RNA sequence. You should know which genes are changed for typical cancer cell aka p53 or ras ect. You could then do a control study in-vivo of titrating different amounts of the steriod/medicine and see if different levels of protein or RNA are changed. At least that is what i would have done, but I haven't taken an advanced genetics class in 5 years. And that stuff changes fast.

If you're struging with genetics I suggest going and speaking with your prof before it's too late. NS isn't always going to be here and with information that is as rigid as genetics, I feel that you may seriously benefit from a quick meeting with him/her. Plus, profs love when students ask for help.

Haha I have been doing okay in the class with understanding everything. I get help from the prof a lot. She helped me set up my whole cloning lab which is nearly complete. I just have a hard time connecting everything now like these questions

I took genetics last year. its tied for my least favorite class with molecular bio. i would rather study ochem nonstep than fuck with genetics again. Sadly i wiped all that shit from my brain, good luck op
