Touring/AT NSers...

I've been noticing lately that there are a few people on here who are into touring and earning their turns.  Where are you from, where are you touring and whatchagot for touring setups? 

I'm from mass but tour all over the EC and also when I go west for vaca (usually UT/BCC/LCC).  Mostly in VT along the green spine though while I'm home.  Right now I'm on Whitedot Redeemers quiverkilled for Plum Guides, but my 12/13 ON3P Billy Goat Tours should be on my doorstep by tomorrow- and will be my go-to touring skis for the majority of the season.  My boots are Dalbello Virus Tours with cochise top straps grafted on as well because I hated the stock top bail. 

So what's up with you, oh rando beasts of NS?

Got a nice tour today: Col Du Passon from Grands Montets to Montroc (Chamonix). Warm on the skin & bootpack, some sketchy snow but some amazing stashes too. Really makes up for a shitty tour 3 days ago. Blog post: http://www.lornecameron.com/2013/col-du-passon-variation/

I've been doing some AT-ing lately and having a great time. It's a lot different from resort skiing. But I've been hiking out of Canyons Resort in Park City. A lot of good terrain right out of the resort. Decently easy hiking too. I have Black Diamond Mega Watt skis, Full Tilt Konflict boots, and Diamir Pro Freeride Bindings. I love this setup!

Went to the Tetons for MLK weekend and skied Mt. Wister (?). Didn't really have a plan but we camped in avalanche canyon and skied around.

Some touring stoke! Some of the chasing snowflakes crew got out to film a t.v show. skip to the 6:15 for the touring goodness. If anyone knows about the ACMG Keith Reid is the president of the acmg and he was our guide for the day ( mind blown )

we did 2 days at rogers pass this weekend. skied Grizzly glades both days and it was lovely. unless the resorts get dumped on we will be back for more next weekend. I never thought I would tour more than I would resort ski in a season, but here I am with 15 touring days and 3 resort days. And I am very happy about it!

Been touring around Louise a bit lately, found some good snow today in the slack country, and yesterday went to do a traverse over the mitre(back by the plain of 6 glaciers teahouse) over to paradise valley but got stopped by a big ass cornice. Anyone looking to get out around here in the next week or so. I'm off 7 days a week so unless I have plans i'm always up for some shred!

went for a low angle pow tour yesterday. about a foot of 24 to 28 degree pow, low vis but some amazing turns. tomorrow will be off the chain dangerous but ohhhh so deep and blower.

Something I have wanted to get into for a while and I am planning on piecing it together as I get more gear. I found a great deal on a Vulcan, 26.5 shell. I ski a 26.5 FT.

I was going to get a new intuition wrap liner for it (I have a thing about used boot liners...), booster strap and work out any other kinks in the fit with a trusted fitter I know through work. Is this the right move for a jumping off point into touring?

Assuming I won't be able to piece together the bindings/skis for some time I thought I should jump on the deal

Vulcan is the real deal man. Super stiff, super burly. Ain't no FT. If you are a hard charging aggressive skier who weighs more that 160 pounds it could be for you. Other options in that same line that are a little more forgiving are the One and the Mercury. But just make sure you have the right foot for the boot, do some research (wild snow) and make sure before you pull a blind trigger you know what you are getting into. Yes the Vulcan is the hottest thing out, but it isn't for everyone.

Yes but I was willing to overlook the looming charging that boot needs for the price, 150 shipped! I can see it should not be the first choice for someone who is just dipping a toe in the water however

Yeah I was gonna say...!! But anyways, Titan is a great boot as well but do your research! Not as stiff as the Titan but Dynafit boots seem to have quite a special shape to them so do your research and see what will work for you. But...150 is a great deal.

I probably won't end up getting them, idk, I'll probably be fine touring in FT's and if I were goin for a tech boot they probably wouldn't be my first choice.

Whatever would work for you. I'd keep the strap done up for sure though. Either tuck away the cables, or just loosely strap them down,
I've taken off my toe buckles entirely since they have never served any purpose in their life. So it's just one less buckle for me to worry about

if forecasts are right this weekend is gona be quite good. got a nice little storm system rolling in then a break in the weather over the weekend. great time to skip out on the resort and go for a stroll.


also im going to Valhalla mountain lodge february 17-25 for some epic kooteny skiing. i will have lotttssss of pics/footage after this trip. sooooo stoked.

also the thing i find most discomforting about touring is how it burns my leg hair, anyone have any solutions to this??

Im not exactly sure where that lodge is but the Valhallas are a super beautiful and burley mountain range.

Just tough out the leg hair burn, it usually goes away for me after a full day for skinning or so. Just get all those hairs ripped out right away and you;ll be good to go.

I haven't gotten as many days as I had hoped this year, due to a few things but i think I have an awesome trip planned for late april at Barret Lake in the Kootenays. A friend is going to sled us out there, and then were gonna drink beer and do some solid touring.

So stoked!
