I've been noticing lately that there are a few people on here who are into touring and earning their turns.  Where are you from, where are you touring and whatchagot for touring setups? 

I'm from mass but tour all over the EC and also when I go west for vaca (usually UT/BCC/LCC).  Mostly in VT along the green spine though while I'm home.  Right now I'm on Whitedot Redeemers quiverkilled for Plum Guides, but my 12/13 ON3P Billy Goat Tours should be on my doorstep by tomorrow- and will be my go-to touring skis for the majority of the season.  My boots are Dalbello Virus Tours with cochise top straps grafted on as well because I hated the stock top bail. 

So what's up with you, oh rando beasts of NS?

Definitely go recommended, the Jeffs will ski the best that way for sure

Just got back from an overnight trip into the Hyalites, near Bozeman. If it hadn't been for the wind, we were going to sleep under the stars out on the lake ice, but there was a bit too much of a breeze for that, unfortunately. But overall, we had spectacular weather for camping.

As far as the snow goes, it was worse than I had expected going off the avalanche report. We noticed a couple small collapses on the way up, although there was no recent slide activity in the entire basin (E fork of Hyalite). Heading up out of Heather Lake today, I dug a pit that did not react much in tests, but did give two separate Q1 shears, and there was a really nasty layer of facets at the ground. 200' up the slope, I decided to dig another pit. This one was half the depth (~20") and gave an ECT12 at the ground. We turned around immediately, and did a quick tour around the lower edge of the basin before heading out.

Even though we did not really ski anything, it was still a wonderful couple days of touring, and the weather hardly could have been better.

Yees!! I don't know if I'm going to make it out there this season because of lack of cash flow to my bank but I sure as hell hope to. Whenever it is I'll be sure to get a crew of my fave baker homies. I'll be in jackson spring break i'm stoked on that

Just get black diamonds, accessions, 100% nylon. IDK some people really like magic carpets but my buddy had a lot of issues with his.

I cant comment about that specific ski and mounting, but in general

I mount my touring set up the same way I would mount any other set up. Unless you plan on skiing differently while touring.

Never have had any issues with me. They are sticky as shit after 3 years of heavy use. Never detaches from the ski. Great skin if your not looking for an ultra light setup

Meh, there's better skins out there. But it does seem almost ungrateful not to use the proform...

So my setup is starting to come together. I got the 2013 surface save lifes and marker f10s. Now I need skins. Looking on backcountry I saw that G3 had a twin tip connector kit. Do you need this if you have twins? Or will I be fine

You don't need it. Those skins work find without it. That being said, I have the twin tip connectors on my skins.

not a necessity, though they are nice to have. i'll say it's very nice when you're doing full day stuff with skins on and off a lot, as even if your skins freeze up and have trouble sticking you can get the tension to keep them on and they wont slip off like normal clips.

If I was skinning on something without a tail notch, I'd definitely buy the twin tip connector.

We're developing and will be releasing a touring ski as well as skins next year on conjunction with Pomoca (super credible skin company from Switzerland. The ski will be on a new Sick Day chassis and our testers and engineers are freaking out about it . the performance, weight, feel have exceeded expectations! Sorry for the blatant product plug but yep.. just did!

I got a refurbished Orthovox 3+ last year, and it's great. I'd be wary of one that is used and from someone I don't know, but refurbished from the manufacturer is an easy way to save some money.

I'll probably be on climbingskinsdirect skins from now in strictly based on price and product. Unless you've got proform someplace, $100ish new is hard to beat- and you can get cheesy sweater print. They're the same material as the OG purple ascensions too fwiw.

G3 has got the best tail and tip clips but even the crap BD ones work fine. Almost nobody should be afraid to notch their tails too

How come you guys are going with Pomoca? I'm guessing this ski is going to be targeted more at the American market, so why not go with a skin manafacturer who's got an established name in North America?

I'd say no, take that $120 bucks, save up and get at least a tracker 2. As discussed in recent pages, that beacon isn't quite obsolete but it's pretty close and it shouldn't be purchased at this point if you're starting out. Used beacons are fine but obviously you need to test them - but you should be practicing with a new piece of gear like that anyway.

Also, the whole "not planning on buying one this year" - are you actually skinning yet? Because if you're in avy terrain of any kind it's mandatory, not really something you can put off.

And that second paragraph, yep, I'm not as stupid as that sounds, haha. I will be skinning some, probably not much, and most of it will be on the local "mountain" which has 0 avy danger or on hiking trails, etc, not as much ski touring as using my AT setup as for cross country skiing, getting places I couldn't without snowshoes.

I am planning on renting a beacon from school to practice with, a lot and for bigger trips where we will actually be in the BC. I just can't justify buying a beacon yet when I can rent one for 5$ a weekend and at max will use it 5 or six times. Will definitely be purchasing one over the summer though. Thanks!

^^the other advantage to buying a newer one is that, aside from advances in technology, they're just plain easier to use. much more user-friendly!

Went for a half-ass tour a few weeks ago, but it's been straight rain on mt hood ever since. we've at least had some solid beacon training! hopefully some snow up there tonight!

I never questioned the quality of the product. I merely pointed out that Pomoca's brand is significantly more established in Europe than it is stateside. I don't believe that observation is unfounded.

Pomoca makes the best skins hands down. Good choice Line.

If you can get them, I'd buy Pomoca skins. Decent grip, light weight and pack tighter than other options.

Who makes K2's skins? I assumed that the Line version would just be a re-branded set of K2 skins cut to Line ski dimensions.

Finally Done work, Last couple days did a few classic traverses around Lake Louise, snow wasn't that great but it was bluebird and travel conditions were nice so both days were under 6hours. Good to warm the legs up for a big year! Though we need some fucking snow asap

Shadows Look Cool


Bow Peak, Full of some really nice couloirs and some neat faces etc etc.


Skied through this little gully, From above it doesn't look big at all but once you drop in its a massive feature, really cool to ski but a definite terrain trap and regretted getting commited to it after droping in.

Nice one Luke. Wigley gets back to the Kootenays tomorrow and he's way too keen so snow or not - he's definitely going to be a huge motivator to get me out there. I haven't gone out in over a week now, so it'll be nice to have him around to light a fire under my ass and get me up in the mountains - even if it's to have lunch on the peak. I don't know anyone who's been up in the hills around here at all this past week since the rain stopped.

There's a ton here.

Some good questions to ask first:

-What opportunities do you have to go touring? What's the terrain like? How much will you actually be out walking around?

-Based on the above, what sorts of knowledge and gear do you need to acquire to do it safely? How much will those cost? Are they available near you?

-Who will you go with? Internet advice is just a starting point, so you'll need buddies and ideally mentors to help get you started along the right track.


On another thought, there will soon be a full forum devoted to going uphill, and I think a "I'm getting into touring, what do I need?" sticky thread is certainly in order.

Yea rain's a bitch, luckily didnt really affect the 93n that much actually dropped some light pow in places. just a light 10-15cms but enjoyable. Looks like maybe this weekend we get a little refresh around golden/revy.
Coast looks like its doing nicely, maybe a return to the duffy trip is in order? Or farther north shames way could be a riot.

both! while most advanced avy classes cover basic cpr and field procedures i still found my first aid specific class to be extremely helpful. mind you i did this in norway and it was in a foreign language which made it a bit difficult but still i really enjoyed getting a first aid specific class.

Things are supposedly skiing well above 2100m ish but everything below is pretty horrendous. Good on ya Luke! Better to take a walk than to sit around and wait.

so from my limited meteorological understanding it looks like the jet stream might finally stop its crazy swings and settle down next week after one more rain cycle. crossing every single limb i have that it happens.
