Touring/AT NSers...

I've been noticing lately that there are a few people on here who are into touring and earning their turns.  Where are you from, where are you touring and whatchagot for touring setups? 

I'm from mass but tour all over the EC and also when I go west for vaca (usually UT/BCC/LCC).  Mostly in VT along the green spine though while I'm home.  Right now I'm on Whitedot Redeemers quiverkilled for Plum Guides, but my 12/13 ON3P Billy Goat Tours should be on my doorstep by tomorrow- and will be my go-to touring skis for the majority of the season.  My boots are Dalbello Virus Tours with cochise top straps grafted on as well because I hated the stock top bail. 

So what's up with you, oh rando beasts of NS?

the wasatch is getting a bit nutty from dorks cuttin cornices off fantasy ridge
onto soli patrolers below trying to open honeycomb canyon
to the dipshit who kicked off this one and didn't even bother callin alta central
so then lifeflight and first responders need to go check it out

cornice cutting can have a time and place, but this type of behavior needs to be curtailed not encouraged.

Skinned up to Mount Blackmore today after some fresh snow here in Bozeman. Sadly the line we wanted to ski, and only one that was really filled in had a sketchy snow pack so we decided against skiing it. Still a great time and got some turns down through the meadows. Definitely need some more snow.

^^The Ribbon? That one is usually pretty sketchy all year because of the wind sweeping across Elephant Mountain from the West, although it is a kick-ass line come spring. I got up there probably a week late to connect line down it from the summit (plus a potential alternate direct line looker's left of the main one), but alas, we had to just ski perfect corn down a line filled to the brim.

Looks like the Frazier Basin has been good the past couple days, although my two knee surgeries say I should wait until there's more snow to get out.

Well since I've got the sledder just got myself most likely set up in a nice 2 bedroom trailer for the winter in the boonies. Conveniently I can access this zone via sled right from my front door.

The day I leave for two weeks in the rain in the UK, it snows and goes cold and bluebird at home.

This trip is awesome, but there's a small part of me that seriously regrets getting on the plane.

where is that? looks like a sketchy section of road to cross there, but terrain looks pretty sweet.

yea its definitely a bit sketchy, 12 mile creek its called, logging road starts in nicholson, im the third last place before the logging road starts, if i like it when i check it out this weekend thats going to be my new home for 6 months. STOKED

The tgr thread has a bit of beta on the pass. Some stuff up by asulken hut is being skied, same with video peak and I'd assume 8812 bowl as well. Snowpack is probably still shy of 1M up there.

Ok, about to pull the trigger on some skins, I'm going with the G3 alpinists, on sale on Backcountry for $97, My skis are 189 Shreditor 112's, 135 at the widest point, so I'm going with the Extra long, 130mm wide skins. I just want to check and make sure I am sizing them right since I have never bought skins before...

Go off the width of the tail of your ski. The vast majority of the grip you get skinning is from your toe back on the ski, so you really don't need edge-to-edge coverage up front.

Ex: on a ski that is 126-103-114, a 110mm skin would be perfect. Remember you'll be cutting them 2-4mm narrower than the ski as well, to give yourself some edges.

Just thought I would let you guys know I got my hands on some king pins today. I must say I'm pretty impressed. I should say I have not skied them yet as the mountain I not opening but I'll be doing an on hill test as soon as I can.

The build of th toe is impressive. It's seems power full and well built. The heel reminded me of a f12 but again seems sodium built. The walk mode for the heels seems simple and easy to move and the walk height adjustments seem very dynafit. The lack of a higher din version may hold it back from really taking on the beast straightaway but I do see quite a positive outlook for the binding.

As I say once I get some on snow I'll get a full review up but I thought you guys may be interested

I just purchased some new skis, Surface Green Lifes off someone on the bst. Might need new skins for them due to them being longer than my previous skis. I liked my black diamond skins that I have but am looking for any other skins that are around $100 - $150 that are good. I weigh roughly 170 with all my gear.

I'm not saying the Green Lifes suck, but they aren't good... had a pair as a park ski/piste ski and while sure, they were centre mounted - any time I took them into soft snow they sucked. nose's were too soft and they had no stomping ability. I'm 190lbs, 6'1" and aggressive on the 182 Green Lifes centre mounted, so take my review as you will. If you haven't mounted them yet though, consider this warning.

Also, ripped the bindings out pretty quickly on them (taking some top sheet with them) so I kinda have a hate on for Surface and their durability in general.

CamembertSki areas are still closed, this is happening in the alps next couple of days, I still have to mount my bindings etc and I have zero time the next 2/3 weeks due to tests and projects.. F*ck that, I want to shred that pow!

Interesting, but I doubt I'll have any of those problems. I'm 5'5 and weigh 145 lbs. Chances are high that these will be my all mtn skis ong with my touring skis. Even if they do break I didnt pay much for them so we will see. Thanks for your in put.

The horizon doesn't look good. Shallow snowpack, long Arctic high pressure without much in terms of wind for all regions of BC/Alberta. I fear we are going to be dealing with deep instabilities for most of the winter similar to last year. Time will tell indeed. Maybe we'll get lucky this time around. Currently it looks like the high pressure will break by next weekend (at least in the West Kootenays), so we will find out soon enough how this layer will bond with the new snow. I haven't been out yet due to work, but I should be able to get out around these parts on Monday onwards... very curious to see what the surface layer is going to look like by the end of next week after two weeks of this high pressure.

Already today 2 remotely triggered avalanches in the Wasatch. Looks to be 12"- 18" deep. No one caught. Just because it's early season, doesn't mean we don't have to be as safe as always.

Pending my visa being accepted, it looks like I'll be moving from Nelson to Hokkaido this winter. I also just bought my first tech set up, so I'm looking forward to doing some touring in Japan this winter. I'll make sure I'll do some trip reports and such for this thread.

fuck yah thats awesome. iv got some friends doing japanuary, wish i could join them but life as a college athlete doesnt really allow for a month in japan unfortunately:(


also about the early season instabilities, i find it to be one of the more unstable times of the year, all those little trees and bushes dont provide great holds for the snow packs. lots of weak points throughout. definitely seen some stupid things done just because their isnt a lot of snow.

Went to my local shop to spy on their XC stuff. (I work at a bike shop that also sells XC skis). When I was there I saw on the clearance rack a North Face Hyvent jacket for $100... needless to say it is now mine. Gear is coming together for the season.

I've got one that I use, but I didn't pay for it. I'm not 100% convinced that they will save me, but....It's not something that will hurt you either.

You're supposed to ski with it in your mouth, which will likely not happen. If you're on a slope that you're so scared that you want that in your mouth, maybe you should double think if you should ski it at all.

It's something that could help you in a slide, but might not. I certainly feel better knowing I have something that might help me stay alive a little longer, although avoiding an avalanche altogether is a far better precaution to take, as was already mentioned. I have mixed feelings about avalungs/airbags and their effects on judgement, but I do think they are both good things to have, if possible.

Don't pile yourself too high with gadgets when you could just as easily use your brain!

iv been using an avalung for the past few seasons more just to have it. dont know how much good it would actually do me. picked up a bca 32 bag this year for cheap so im stoked on that.

Avalungs save lives, and so do airbag packs, IF USED PROPERLY. I've been using one of the two since 2006 religiously, and the one time I've been caught in a slide, neither would have helped. Luck saved me as I was pinned to a tree, survived the massive pressure, and ended up on top of the snow. But, I still use what extra safety devices there are to increase my change for survival should shit hit the fan.

i like the sentiment about treeline and below skiing. definitely the only time iv thought that an avalung could help me out. lots of that kind of skiing around here.

Avylungs are relativly cheap, so I think its worth your while, if your looking for some added safety. There is alot of discussion about getting it in place durring a slide .... you have alot to think about when the mountian comes down ontop of you, just fighting for the surface is hard enough. I couldnt imagine putting a mouth peice in at the same time.

Personally, I dont use one and I dont think I would. I use the PAS bag from snow pulse. Its not cheap, but it has the added bonus of protecting your head and neck from trauma. There is new data about the bags that shows they are not as affective as perviously thought...but honestly, anything that will give you a fighting chance or a few extra minutes is worth its weight in gold.

At the end of the day, its extremely important to rememeber that the best life saving equipment is your brain. Dont let extra safety gear fool you into thinking you can expose your self to addtional risk.

For anyone with a bag, please be sure to test fire it on purchase and at least once per year.

I'm a big fan. When you look at cost vs. what it gives you, there's not much reason to not have one. And you do need to ski with it in your mouth, but that can actually be nice on those absurdly deep days.

But I'm in complete agreement: better to avoid having to use it.
