Touring/AT NSers...

I've been noticing lately that there are a few people on here who are into touring and earning their turns.  Where are you from, where are you touring and whatchagot for touring setups? 

I'm from mass but tour all over the EC and also when I go west for vaca (usually UT/BCC/LCC).  Mostly in VT along the green spine though while I'm home.  Right now I'm on Whitedot Redeemers quiverkilled for Plum Guides, but my 12/13 ON3P Billy Goat Tours should be on my doorstep by tomorrow- and will be my go-to touring skis for the majority of the season.  My boots are Dalbello Virus Tours with cochise top straps grafted on as well because I hated the stock top bail. 

So what's up with you, oh rando beasts of NS?

I have the 10/11 Sir Francis bacons with barons. Its a heavy setup but I just love the ski... I ski in the Adirondacks for the most part, but have taken a few jaunts on trips. Early rise/rocker is key on the really tight trails to make quick turns.

going on a semi big mission next week, skinning out about 2 miles and camping at near the basin of some epicness.

not my pic

destination is the back peak, but we are also trying for the chute lookers right. also to the lookers left is a huge arm of the mt that stretches a mile or so with epic pow, pillows, drops etc

After kicking around the idea for the last couple of seasons. I finally know enough people, and have enough drive to want to tour. Gonna build up the gear over the next couple of months.

Gonna be my 191 BG's with inserts, and Dynafit Radical FT. And of course whatever boot fits me.

Great, stable snow in the Utah backcountry right now. With the resorts completely packed out last weekend I went up Big Cottonwood with a buddy and found deep snow with very few people. Seeing the shitshow of cars heading for Brighton and Solitude told me I made the right call. Just below the summit of Little Water Peak-

Ha, has to be one of the smoothest skiers ever. Sterbenz has some nice turns to, haven't seen video of him skiing in a long time.

just for anyone interested in weight:

I have 184 atomic blogs + MFDs + FKS18s + Dalbello Krypton Rampages + Magic Carpet skins and they weight out to ~12 lbs per foot. Probably about as heavy as you can get haha.

They definitely feel heavy but I wouldn't have guessed they were that much. Note that I use them mainly as an inbounds pow/all mountain ski, but I still like to get out and tour quite a bit.

On another note, my skins didn't come with the mesh strips that go in between when you fold them up so I found some window screen stuff and it works really well for the same purpose and is much cheaper than name brand stuff you'd buy at the ski shop. no more pain in the ass pulling skins apart in the wind and snow at the top!

Just got done shredding one of the biggest mtns in our county, was on top of the world! To bad our group of three all forgot cameras haha, but overall it was definitely the best skin/ski of the year. goood times to be had in the colorado backcountry right now, snow may not be the best but it's settled and the peaks are just begging to be skied!

Kicking Horse is just ridiculously good once you learn the ropes.

I'll be there this weekend, rudager. Orange pants, black jacket, black helmet. Just holler at me if you want to do some laps in or around the resort.

that happened to me too. I was always in a high heel position. I had acl surgery awhile ago and my one season on trekkers made my knee so much worse. now, a few seasons later, my knee still hurts more than it ever did before that one on trekkers. so please be careful!

and I ski on black diamond justice 175 with barons and salomon quest 10w. hoping to upgrade to dynafits next year and new boots if I have to or tech soles for my quests if salomon ever releases them.

I started touring on trekkers, and have slowly upgraded bindings, skis, and boots every season. I think the biggest difference was with boots. I am comfortable now touring all day without my feet dying.

live in Calgary and tour mostly in Kananaskis, jasper parkway lake louise area, rogers, and around squamish and whistler when I can. had about 15 days touring so far this year and only 3 at resorts. I just can't justify hardpack resort anymore when I know there is snow in the backcountry just waiting for me!

we went to black prince in kananaskis today and it was sooooo deep. well, close to black prince, the normal route is closed due to a grizzly and her 3 cubs in a den near the parking area. cold but super light super deep super steep. probably my deepest run from touring ever. going again tomorrow, same general area, to tent ridge. can't wait!

Skinned way north of Bridger Bowl on the ridge today and skied this line. Really fun one to ski; not too skinny, not too fat, and not too steep.

Pulling this right from my tumblr post/log.

Tour Log #4 - 1/13/13
I have decided to start a touring log, mostly because this blog needs something new to it, and I have all these pictures from the tour that never make it on to anything by themselves.

Anyways, I’ll start on the fourth tour trip for this season; the other three will be “lost logs”, and I will get to them later.

For a background, I’ve mostly been skiing sidecountry access from Kicking Horse. The resort has endless access to different bowls and ridges that can all be achieved from their lifts. This makes it easy for starting tours around the noon around.

To start the day (at 12:30), we began by bootpacking up the Ozone peak, and dropped in the backside (see photo/middle open face).

Kicking Horse has recently blessed on the weekend with a fair amount of snow over the week; and as weekend warrior from Calgary, I’m only ever to make it out for weekends. Most of the time, I’m still able to gather the snow.

After the six of us came down the backside of Ozone, we skinned up and headed up towards and along the ridge of North Rudy’s Bowl. Due to the current conditions (natural and man made slides everywhere), we decided to play it safe and head down the less exposed slope.

These don’t seem like the biggest adventures in skiing, but to skin and hike for all your vertical feels oh so worth it; especially when the snow was as amazing and as deep as it was today.

To conclude the day, the group split, half continued onward up the next face, while the other half went back into the resort to enjoy delicious delicious apres containing Caesars and burgers.

And that concludes my weekly tour log. For next week, I plan on skinning up and heading into Kananaskis Country.

Man do I love the slackcountry laps at Kicking Horse. Ozone, Rudy's, Molars and back to the gondola. Been wanting to go for a day there so bad, I just don't know how to get around giving RCR my money. I'll figure it out eventually.

The back of Ozone was so nice, and there's so much terrain I'd love to do. Plus the boot pack up was pretty easy (you can also skin).

Molars have also been pretty good this year, I've done both sides of Molars this season, but opted out yesterday since I wasn't feeling the conditions (slides everywhere), and I had to drive back to Calgary with some sort of awake concious.

Come out one weekend though!
