DrailMaybe someone from Utah (and others) can give me some info here. After reading the Powder article about our responsibility to come up with a proper code of conduct as far as what you're skiing above and what not, I was kind of shocked to find out that UDot seems to be behind when it comes to closures above roads. Can you really ski terrain off Superior that can cause an avalanche that takes out the highway? That's kinda fucked up.
Kootenay and Rogers Pass's in BC here both have permanent closures for any avalanche terrain that directly effects the highway corridors, with Rogers Pass going a step further with rotating closures on almost everything else within close proximity to the highway. The system in place is new - the old one had a LOT more terrain permanently closed to skiers. 'We' are working together to find the best solution for both sides.
Does Teton Pass not have anything in place? Loveland Pass? other busy popular touring areas around highways/properties?
performing control work on a trans continental highway and a box canyons ending in ski resorts is pretty different
the cottonwoods terrain is forest service land and we are free to use our lands, no check in, no permits, or needless govermental over-site.
This land is your land my land aint no queens land here.
udot is tasked w/ makin the road safe for travel.
lcc is the most challenging w/ over 130 slide paths to monitor/control.
http://www.avalanchemapping.org/IMAGES/litcotweb.pdf
the problem they are having is the dawn patrol contingency tries to beat the morning closures and get up n over into the bcc or into griz/tlp
the bcc has way fewer slidepaths whose runout zones can impact the road so it rarely get closed,
and there are no interlodge restrictions because there aren't buildings in the slidepaths, but its fairly easy to access the lcc/bcc ridgeline even if 210 is closed
most of it boils down to common sense and letting udot do their job.
kinda hypocritally funny/odd when you video yourself out starting large "REPEATING" avalaunches
then wanna preach about bc code of conducts

all i know is if everyone who tours the wasatch decides to drop cornices and intentionally start avvies during elevated avvy danger it's gonna be a total shit show
so practicing what your preaching aint a bad start
