Touring/AT NSers...

I've been noticing lately that there are a few people on here who are into touring and earning their turns.  Where are you from, where are you touring and whatchagot for touring setups? 

I'm from mass but tour all over the EC and also when I go west for vaca (usually UT/BCC/LCC).  Mostly in VT along the green spine though while I'm home.  Right now I'm on Whitedot Redeemers quiverkilled for Plum Guides, but my 12/13 ON3P Billy Goat Tours should be on my doorstep by tomorrow- and will be my go-to touring skis for the majority of the season.  My boots are Dalbello Virus Tours with cochise top straps grafted on as well because I hated the stock top bail. 

So what's up with you, oh rando beasts of NS?

F12s > Dukes unless you NEED the 16 DIN.

kinda tough to recommend a specfic boot w/out knowing your skiing style or what kinda touring but check ksl second tracks and a lot of at gear gets sold on tgr
decent boots are fairly easy to find or at least shells.
if your not brand loyal try to find a last that fits your foot best.
try sum boots on at rei, bd,ya missed the swap sat. wastach touring,
theres a cool little sporting goods shop in provo off university ave but i can't recall the name

What they^ said. ALWAYS go with the Binding Freedom inserts. QK's name sounds cool so it gets said a lot (and I've even said it by accident when I actually use BF parts) but they are totally knockoffs of the legit design Jon@BF came up with.


Most people get the stripped ones out by putting red loctite on a bolt and screwing it into the insert, letting it cure and then cranking the whole shebang out with a wrench.

Perhaps you could use a really small dremel disc to cut a flathead slot into the top of the QK? But yes, go with BindingFreedom for the next go round.

Yeah, but dukes were cheap and I have no desire to redrill. They make a great resort pow ski and big snow / short tour ski as they are.

Need is for a longer tour / stratovolcano ski. Main problem is, the steeple was a fuck load o' fun inbounds and charging, and I know I'll want to do an occasional drop or no fall zone on that setup. Whatever system I go with will undoubtedly be the system I choose for all/most future skis as well.

Drop a screw into it with some epoxy, let it set. Try to back the screw and the qk out, which I've heard works - never got this to go when I did it though, I think in the end dropping a bolt with some nuts threaded onto it was the solution. Just makes a mess of the core too. Daves idea sounds much easier, definitely try that first.

On the second setup that's a tough call. What boots are you using? $$ restrictions?

dude i feel you i learned to ski at timberline, before it was a train park resort, and now i live in Utah, i mostly do ifsa comps ( aka big mountain) but i go touring with my uncle a lot to.

On the topic of Binding Freedom and Quiver Killer I'm slightly confused about the two brands and their involvement with Sun Valley Ski Tools. A month or so ago SVST announced that they are partnered with Binding Freedom:

On SVST's site they're still listing that they're a Quiver Killer wholesaler as:

Ha, pretty odd. I'm not sure if this is just a lack of an update to SVST's site or what. Anyone have some insights on this? Either way it looks like Binding Freedom's new site has had some nice updating; and it's awesome that they now have a dedicated full time employee.

What's stripped about them? The inner threads? Do you have another you could replace it with?

Dremel idea with a disc on it to cut the groove for a flat head could work. An EZ out could do the trick, too. Maybe try getting a bolt to go onto the screw, screw it in as far as you can, tighten the bolt against the QK, and back the insert out? Whichever method you choose, heat it up with a soldering iron first to soften the epoxy.

If you can get the QK out without damaging the threads on the ski, I have a spare that I could send your way. It's a Binding Freedom insert, but they're pretty much the same thing.

Beast 14? As noted, depends if you have boots for them. Since you were considering G3 I assume you do.

Also don't the F12 / F12 EPF have the same screw pattern as the Duke / Duke EPF?

I was leaning beast as well. Kind of hard to decide between "longer tours" lightness and "stratovolcano" burl which is generally pretty big skiing. I think that the Beast could do both pretty darn well and still do the occasional trip to the resort without being uber harsh. Hard to say though without knowing his boot situation. Unless he has Pinnacles though, he's going to be adding a step when swapping skis by having to swap toe plates with any low tech setup and iirc the beasts do require a boot mod on the heel unless you've got Mercury boots (?). That's why I asked him... Lots of question marks. How deep down the rabbit hole does he want to nerd?


Also yes, the F12 has the same hole pattern, but he said he got a killer deal on the Dukes which makes sense, just make sure they haven't developed any play/slop if they're used.

Gear is so hard, man. Decisions, decision!

Pretty sure the beast heel mod doesn't interfere with your ability to use other dynafit heels. I'm assuming if he's going Dukes on one and tech on the other he's got a dedicated touring boot, but yeah. Obviously depends on that.

Also Rowen why would you be content with two pairs of skis.

Ok, So I got some of last years shreditor 112's in a 189. These are really my one ski quiver, will be on them 95% of the time. I am thinking of going with binding freedoms and some Attack 13's for resort days and Dukes for light touring. Is this a bad idea? I already have the attack 13's and I can probably get a really good deal on the Dukes. How hard is it to mount the binding freedoms. Do I need to buy one of their kits with the bit and tap?

Ok, hmm, I was leaning toward the binding freedoms since these are my only skis, I will be using them mostly for inbounds crud busting, some park and maybe like 7-10 tours. So like 80% of the time they would have the attacks on them. I figured for that kind of skiing I would want an alpine binding.

Then, next year when I can afford some tour sticks I can stick the Dukes on them full time and leave the shreditors with the attacks. Basically I can probably get dukes for about the price of day wreckers, which were my first choice. For this season touring performance is not a priority, I am simply trying to get started into it.

If that's the story I'd just get Adrenalines and be done with it. I keep forgetting about them but they're fucking awesome and BOMBPROOF. I have a friend who breaks everything and he's been on them since they came out without a single problem. Or F12s. You'll want to just get a frame binding with a low stack height for that, no sense in making it harder than is has to be, y'know? Once you get more into touring you can add another setup like you said- and by then you'll have a better idea of what you want out of a dedicated touring rig.

You don't need to buy his kit specifically, but you do need a bottoming tap, handle and the correct size bit to go with it. Home depot might sell it, but if you're already paying for shipping, it's not a bad idea to just get it from him.

As far as installing them goes - it's fairly difficult. I'd consider myself handier than the average person, and after 3 sets of inserting skis, I'm just starting to figure it out.

If you're doing the fresh mount itself, you have to get the template, drill for the right size holes, tap the holes, and put the inserts in.

If you're doing it in existing holes, you just have to bore the old ones out to the correct size, and still do all the tapping.

I had been doing the whole process myself, using a drill press to set the depth of the holes, know the drill bit is going in straight, and to help tap the holes. (Turn the chuck by hand instead of using a tap handle, use a bit of downward pressure from the press so it's definitely getting purchase.)

I like Huck's sentiments of one binding. I had mixed luck with my Adrenalines.

tBatt is right: it isn't easy. Definitely use a drill press to both drill the holes and tap the threads--that keeps them vertical, and that's really important for the alignment of the screws.

Another thing to think about: switching out bindings on the skis is a total pain in the ass midday. Say you've been ripping inbounds laps, then a buddy wants to head out for a quick lap, and you're stuck swapping eighteen screws in the parking lot. Then you drop one, can't find it, and have to find the right machine screws locally. Also, many bindings need different types of machine screws to fit into their different holes and slots--it can really be annoying.

Thanks for all the advice, I will keep looking around and try to figure it out. Right now, I already have the Attack's and I can probably get the dukes for really cheap.

In a perfect world I would have the Shreditors set up with Attacks and Steeple 102's set up with a tech binding. I really don't need to be able to charge out of bounds. I just want to be able to chase the athletes I shoot which means I need as light of a setup as possible. Oh well, someday...

I just measured my Guardians and got 27mm from the inner most edge of each frame tube (they are somewhat rounded so I tried to be as exact as possible with finding the actual edge).

Somewhat related: Large Guardian 16's for sale with 115mm brakes. Perfect working condition, used 10 times (5 tours and 5 days of lifts) - $125 OBO in the Seattle area.

I'm sure I haven't spent nearly as much time on the Guardians as others in this thread, but I had no issues with the locking mechanism icing up, or even becoming plugged with snow.

I think it goes without saying that for these styles of bindings, it's always a good move to completely clear the snow out from under the rotating toe and climbing bars before switching back into descend mode, but again, I never once had to clear out the locking mechanism. It was never a concern to be honest as the binding always locked or released when needed.

Weight and the BSL ranges they will accept. I don't have the weights though.

Small: 265 - 320mm
Large: 305 - 360mm

Shit, guess I should have been more clear regarding the weight.

Binding weight; the difference in more or less material between the small and large sizes will change the binding's weight. But I do not have the weights for either binding. If you care, you could probably find them out online pretty easily.

Your weight only affects your DIN, and has nothing to do with the size. Your boot's BSL is how you determine which size binding to go with.

I wear a 28.5 Dalbello, which is a 326mm BSL, and leaves me unable to fit into the size small's range.

What size boot and brand do you wear? Evo has a handy BSL chart here; http://www.evo.com/ski-boot-sole-length-bsl-size-chart.aspx that you can use to easily find your BSL.

that looks like a sweet line, what state? This is probaly the best line I skiied in Vermont,

just moved to colorado might be able to find some here, but gotta love that east coast back country. My set up is alpine trekkers on the 2012 sir francis bacons.

2012/2013 186cm veneer Vick Tours. One mount for large Guardians on the recommended mark for a 326mm BSL. 10 days of use, 5 tours and 5 days of lift accessed. No major edge or base damage.

$350 picked up in the Seattle area.

Just do some side country at the moment. From Western Mass. If you want to get real sketchy, and really earn your turns in the backcountry. try Mount Tom, Hike it, then ski down where its open enough. Steep and fast. usually gets full coverage by late Nov. This will only be my second year with an AT setup but always down to hear about some new spots!

People new to the game, know that the Guardian/Tracker lacks a flat tour mode. In this category I'll take
Adrenalins or Dukes any day of the week.

Oh and by the way the perfect quiver is a bomber bigger 5 dimension pow ski with a heavy AT binding (Adrenalins or Dukes) complimented by a mid-fat ripper with Binding Freedom inserts to swap between a 16 DIN resort binding and a tech binding. This way you can shred the resort and meet up for a quick tour with your big AT ready setup... and be prepared to ski inbounds all day or go for a long tour with your other setup. Just remember, use blue locktite whenever swapping bindings with threaded inserts to prevent stripping and for good hold on the screws.

Cant those guys at DPS get you a better binding? Those skis desirve better..

snomasterOh and by the way the perfect quiver is a bomber bigger 5 dimension pow ski with a heavy AT binding (Adrenalins or Dukes) complimented by a mid-fat ripper with Binding Freedom inserts to swap between a 16 DIN resort binding and a tech binding. This way you can shred the resort and meet up for a quick tour with your big AT ready setup... and be prepared to ski inbounds all day or go for a long tour with your other setup. Just remember, use blue locktite whenever swapping bindings with threaded inserts to prevent stripping and for good hold on the screws.


This is the best articulation I've read of how to run two ski quiver for everything, assuming park isn't in the equation. Nice.

I have kind of the opposite. I've got a pair of PMG 183 stiff Bros with FKS18s for everyday beatings, and a pair of Worth Magics with CASTs and inserts to go full dynafit if I want.

Quick tours or pow days where I'll want to hit some hike-to shit, grab the Magics. Long tours, get it set up the night before for full low-tech. (I don't generally tour to anything but pow) I hate fucking with inserts outside, in the cold or even in a hurry. It totally fkn blows so I force myself to just choose.

So i just got a pair of ON3P Viciks mounted with some Trackers... Now i'm starting to look around for some skins. I don't know much about them. Can anyone just throw me a couple brand names out there so i know where to start looking?

Talking about skins... I'm contemplating how I do skins for the two new pairs of fat skis I'll have - Steeple 112s and Carbon Megas. So the dim's are

139/112/123 189cm
147/120/127 188cm

I'm tempted to just get one pair of skins @140MM wide, cut them for the Steeples and use for both. It'd end up being about 8mm of base showing on the megawatts, and most of that is in front of the binding. I feel like that's going to be okay, especially considering how much total skin will be on the snow.

Maybe someone from Utah (and others) can give me some info here. After reading the Powder article about our responsibility to come up with a proper code of conduct as far as what you're skiing above and what not, I was kind of shocked to find out that UDot seems to be behind when it comes to closures above roads. Can you really ski terrain off Superior that can cause an avalanche that takes out the highway? That's kinda fucked up.

Kootenay and Rogers Pass's in BC here both have permanent closures for any avalanche terrain that directly effects the highway corridors, with Rogers Pass going a step further with rotating closures on almost everything else within close proximity to the highway. The system in place is new - the old one had a LOT more terrain permanently closed to skiers. 'We' are working together to find the best solution for both sides.

Does Teton Pass not have anything in place? Loveland Pass? other busy popular touring areas around highways/properties?

I can only speak to my experience in Colorado and California. There are zero closures near the highways, even in avalanche terrain. In CO however, CDOT takes great care for most LARGE slide path areas to build trenches and whatnot ti reduce the possibility of avy's taking out the road. However, they only do this along i70 and only on direct, large slide zones. Everything is open to ski though.
