Touring/AT NSers...

I've been noticing lately that there are a few people on here who are into touring and earning their turns.  Where are you from, where are you touring and whatchagot for touring setups? 

I'm from mass but tour all over the EC and also when I go west for vaca (usually UT/BCC/LCC).  Mostly in VT along the green spine though while I'm home.  Right now I'm on Whitedot Redeemers quiverkilled for Plum Guides, but my 12/13 ON3P Billy Goat Tours should be on my doorstep by tomorrow- and will be my go-to touring skis for the majority of the season.  My boots are Dalbello Virus Tours with cochise top straps grafted on as well because I hated the stock top bail. 

So what's up with you, oh rando beasts of NS?

Bakerpowi mean im 5'10 and a solid 140 so would i really need the 130? im in a 110 boot right now and its fine. i would do a few long tours but nothing more than 5 miles a day and a few k vert, probably no hut trips this year unfortunately. definitely pm that link, that be rad


Buck has already given some good feedback but I just wanted to add my experiences with them. I found the lateral stiffness in the cuff was not really ther for me. I found some give in the cuff which meant I could not drive the skis as hard as I would in some boots. They are a good boot and certainly worth a try. The freedom sl and waymakers are my fav freeride boots and the new quests are good. What kind of fit are you looking for if you know? What boots are you in currently?

im in black diamond methods from about 3 years ago, they fit wonderfully but were sold to me from steap and cheap as a 27.5 and im a 25.5, or 26 so i was skiing in boots a size too big for a few years. once they packed out it was like skiing in moon boots i had no control.

my friend just texted me saying he just got them for me so iv got a pair of 25.5 130 pinnacles coming my way. i was more just checking on what to expect and like huck said the mods that could be done to them. they wont be ideal but free boots are free boots. and that means i can buy a season pass:)

Awsome yeah free boots are always good and they are a quality boot for sure. Enjoy.

Yeah that's why I was advocating moving up to the 130. It'll ski more like a 110. Hope it fits your foot BP, and I'll send you that link tommorrow from an actual computer.

Yes that is the one, thanks. The shell mod was easy and worked so well I never needed to bother finishing that stupid strap, thank Ullr.

They're cool boots. Far from perfect but they make my feet feel good and they ski well so I will deal with the shortcomings.

Anyone have any boot recomendations? Now ik you can't suggest boots online, but I'd like to try on a variety of boots that offer similar features and choose which one fits best.

I'm looking for a sort of "middle" ranged boot. Not totally downhill, and not a rando boot or something crazy. From the Dynafit line, something similar to the Mercury. What are the other companies "Mercury" boot (one that is made for the same purposes). Or even what boots do you love?

Scarpa freedom! might be kind of expensive now that ski season is right around the corner but there an awesome boot if they fit your fit, great walk mode, super light and have a changeable soul with metal inserts so they will last. Also super capable downhill boot

Really glad I met him properly this one time. While he was undoubtedly at the top of his game in terms of skill and drive, I never liked his writing at all. In person he was nothing like I imagined he would be, so open and friendly, chatting away about whatever. He was just back from a guiding trip in South America and mentioned looking forward his next one. "So a trip just for fun, not for work?" I asked. "Haha, it's all fun man!" was the reply.

Anyway, notice that his skis in his kit photo for that trip had Dynafits on them. 4 months away from ISPO and one of Salomon's two leading athlete's wasn't on a Salomon binding? Read into that what you will.

And he was talking about Plake's DIY tech toe and heel fittings he's been using in Dalbello plug boots lately...

Eh. After talking with another athlete earlier this year, it sounds like the options were exciting, but probably not going to available anytime soon.

The development process at Salomon is so slow, so even if they come out with something cool, it might not be too competitive with whatever else is out there by the time it comes to market.

That said, there was no hint of the Kingpin at SIA last year. Perhaps Marker made a bigger splash with their timing in the fall, but maybe they lose potential sales because buyers have already made decisions about their budgets. Who knows. Maybe Solly will ramp everything up and make it happen.

Kingpin is a 15/16 product with a very early public press release.

Salomon has been very secret about their new line of touring bindings and boots. They had several test trips with some pro's in very remote areas so that the chance of people see things was very small. Marker was spotted testing the kingpin and they did not like that.
Also instagram pictures of those trips gave nothing away. Wouldnt surprise me if the pro's only tested them during those trips and after that had to return the new products.
Somehow I doupt that Salomon/Atomic come with a revolution in the tech binding market. But if they come with something like the kingpin heel but with a safety release in the toes they will own the market.
I heard Marked had plans for a rotating toe piece but that their design could not get certification. Anyone more info on that?
A blend of a kingpin style heelpiece with the wings of a Trab TR2 or maybe rotating piece like Dynafit would me a winner right?
The only problem with that is the total weight..

To me, weight is a fine penalty to pay as long as you're getting something for it. IMO now that the pricing has come down the Beast is freakin' killer and it's going to be tough to dethrone in terms of function and performance at the price point they've set for it now.

Truth. I think that the Radical FT 2.0 is also slotting itself in there as a more burly binding for people who want to tour, but don't want full Beast level insanity.

The lack of a flat walk mode on the Beast probably doesn't bother folks with 60 degrees of cuff movement, but I'm working with less and I like my toes on the flats.

Have you toured on Beasts? I'm assuming you've tried just about everything... I've heard mixed messages as to whether the technical lack of a flat mode is really a big deal on that binding given that riser 1 feels more like a flat mode than a riser when in use.

In other words, in practice, the Beast's limitation feels more like it only has one riser setting rather than a lack of a flat mode.

Not a big deal for me since I have a dedicated radical FT12 setup for long approaches, and I'll find out for myself later on, but curious about your experience.

Oh I agree, I was talking more from the manufacturers point of view. The beast has a lot to offer but they also have had some problems..

Exploratory steep skiing in the remote Arctic fiords on Baffin Island, travelling using kites and skins. We spent 30 days unsupported on the ice covering 240 km and skiing 26 couloirs along the way.

Hey, slightly related to this thread, I am looking for some cheap Day Wreckers, has anyone outgrown theirs and moved on? Also would be interested in some cheap used AT bindings instead. Just trying to get into some low level touring for cheap.

What size BSL are you? I will probably be pulling some large Guardians off some skis to sell this week.

Yeah, your BSL is 318 with a 28/28.5 Full Tilt. With that BSL you could fit into either the small or large Guardians.

small: 265 - 320
large: 305 - 360

I use the Backcountry G3's, and have zero complaints or problems with them. Really good skin. I've never used the K2's, but a buddy says he really likes them, other than they have a poor glide. Again, I've never tried them, so I don't know what to compare them too.

As for swapping over skins. As long as they're pretty similar in size, I don't see where that would be a problem.

Ok, looks like the k2 skins wouldn't swap over so well since they are set up to use the rivet holes on k2 skis. I have also been looking at http://www.climbingskinsdirect.com, Anybody have any experience or knowledge on these?

Again, no direct experience, but I recall hearing not so positive stuff about those, check out TGR.
I'd stick to G3 and BD myself

I've heard good things about them on TGR, but have never used or even seen a pair.

Hiked for some turns today. Well worth it. Steep faces soft spring surface but not slush. Might grab up a split board at some point

climbingskinsdirect skins are great skins. I know a bunch of people who have them and like them, and use the same basic chassis as the BD ascentions. Also, the chipmunk pelt & cheesy sweater prints are pretty sweet IMO.

If you can find a dalbello virus from a year or two ago that's a good one... same with Dynafit vulcan. I may have a virus in 26.6 for sale in early December... it depends on if I get a new boot.

Cast system looks like it would be awesome, but it is definitely way more expensive than the other setups.

anyone in here have experience with a stripped quiver killer? tips, fixes, etc. i'm hoping it's not stripped and that i'm just an idiot but i thought i'd ask to see if anyone has gone through a similar scenario.

if i can just get my Radicals back into the inserts i will keep them there for good...

This is a somewhat bizarre request, but is anyone looking to sell their Speed Radical heels?

I bent a heel post on my Radical FTs last season, and I'd rather have the Speed Radical heel for most situations. The Radical FT toes are fine, and with the lifted toe plate, I'll end up with less ramp angle.
