Touring/AT NSers...

I've been noticing lately that there are a few people on here who are into touring and earning their turns.  Where are you from, where are you touring and whatchagot for touring setups? 

I'm from mass but tour all over the EC and also when I go west for vaca (usually UT/BCC/LCC).  Mostly in VT along the green spine though while I'm home.  Right now I'm on Whitedot Redeemers quiverkilled for Plum Guides, but my 12/13 ON3P Billy Goat Tours should be on my doorstep by tomorrow- and will be my go-to touring skis for the majority of the season.  My boots are Dalbello Virus Tours with cochise top straps grafted on as well because I hated the stock top bail. 

So what's up with you, oh rando beasts of NS?

You should just come skiing with me. Haha. Pretty much gave up on big objectives mid way through the winter last year and realized that shorter, technical terrain is way more fun and so easy to lap. Funny how I had to move to Revelstoke and ski bigger mountains to realize that I don't actually enjoy them as much. Stoked for my upcoming season yo-yoing pillow lines at treeline for the winter.

Might have work in Invermere for Dec/Jan this year though, so if that happens I guess I'll be couloir hunting in the Purcells for the first half of the winter.




Also. That picture. What peak is that?/Where is it? movie quality shit right there.

It's like hot laps in the park except their like snail paced! That peak looks dope! I love lapping trees and pillows. Can't wait for that first ass kicking tour.

Its actually Mt Ogden in the Canadian rockies. E facing and gets super sticky snow on the W side of the divide. Need a lot of things to line up to hit it perfectly!

Skiing around here is pretty damn fun, and you've always got a spot on my couch. Besides WH20, Sandon/Retallack and Kootenay Pass have some choice skiing with sweet fall line trees/pillows and proper alpine sprinkled in for good measure.

As for Ogden... is that area right off the peak or further south along the ridge? Either way, just did a quick nerd out on Google Earth and it's 1200M vert over 10km or so from the highway to the peak proper. Access seems easy enough, just need the right conditions. It's on my list for sure, that face looks so sexy.

Check out trevors blog perpetualski.ca hes got a tr on that area loads of small mini golf lines and some big alpine descents in the area as well. E facing so gets nice and loaded so it actually has deep snow for the rockies.

They're now being sold as a collaboration with Dynafit. The price? $900. What a joke. I'll be building myself some of those to slap on some skinny skis to hit a few XC trails, and to stomp around the local valley faces for jump building.

Ask the shop if those are updated versions or one of the first models. The first models had some problems, slop in the toes when in touring mode and the grey riser was a pain in the ass to click back, a lot of shops send them back because of that. Also Dynafit told people they would send them replacement parts for the riser problems..

They are whatever ones they got at retail last winter, unsure if updated. Haven’t heard about toe slop problems.

I honestly don't know what they're going on, I have Steeple 112s coming but I was going to put Tour F12s or Dukes on those. I have wanted a pair of Carbon Megawatts for a while so I might get those and put the Beasts on them. Would be an unreal up and down setup, no compromises.

Any suggestions of backpacks? I'm looking at cilogear packs because of weight/durability but some of the price tags scare me a bit. For a day pack I'll probably go with a cilogear 30. As for expedition packs I need some help. Anyone have a pack they use for trips that are a week or longer? I could always simply go with the Gregory Denali, but that thing ways a ton. If anyone has a pack in the 80L+ range and wants to give some suggestions that would be great

FWIW I'd probably put those beasts on the megawatts and F12s on the steeples. Carbon and tech toes for touring and jibby pow skis with frame bindings as it should be. Nice 1-2 punch for sure. What boots are you running?

Those are really cool but I would not be fucking with screws & tech toes. Once they make lock-ins a la rando race ultralight tech toe pieces I'll be stoked though! Nice to see that though in any case, as Gen 2 will SLAY and I would absolutely want a pair that locks in like a tech toe and is that tiny.

That's actually really good for Gignoux though- Dynafit's branding will gain his designs a lot of exposure and that is good because he's crazy in a good way. BTW, those aren't for you and me at all- those are for Rando-obsessed tag-ripping skintrack sprinters. If you don't have alien boots, Hagen skinnies and a spandex suit for your uphill pursuits, those aren't even a real option in all reality. Sexy of course but just for rando racing.

So what are the conditions usually like late December to mid January in Colorado (RMNP and near aspen)? I have a friend who is trying to get me to come on a three week touring only excursion but I'm hesitant to commit to anything out of fear that the trip will turn into a wait fest as we wait for decent days and safe snow pack. Thoughts? We wont be able to afford lift tickets, are there any resorts where we could hike to the upper lifts and ride those all day?

Tecnicas. Cochise pro light for tech clamps, bushwhacker for not. Basically the same boot.

Yeah, You probably have hookups but just saw megawatts are $324 on the climb right now...

Well one way of looking at it would be that the same overall cost of the whole setup- megas, skins and beasts- are still going to be cheaper than JUST BEASTS were this time last year... Then it feels more like the bargain it is. That's a sicky setup for the cash.

Hit or miss. Really depends year to year.
I've had some amazing days in the park late December and early January, also some bad ones.

Only the regular version, not carbon. There's a 700 gram difference per ski. That's almost 40% heavier. You can see why I want the carbons.

EDIT: Actually if I got the new ones it'd be even more pronounced. New 188cm carbon megas are 3400g per pair. Those megas are 5100. It's literally 50% heavier. Or to put it more succintly, the difference in weight is roughly the same as a pair of Beast 14's - the Carbons would weigh less WITH BINDINGS than the regular Megas without.

Shop friends of mine skied them a bit on their G3 demo skis and said they're fine. Works just like a Radical, no better or worse.

depends on the year, im sure there will be some things skiable in Rocky, maybe even dragon's tail and some other big couloirs, but conditions might limit what's available...there are definitely some great spots that are much more reliable early season as well that are fun with less consequence. there is definitely stuff down by aspen as well, though i've never skied it, but i can answer some questions about the rocky and the i70 corridor.

i have a similar question. im looking at doing a trip this january (has to be early-mid january)-- should i look at wyoming and/or utah rather than colorado?

depends what you're looking to do. if you have the ability to wait until closer to watch snow patterns definitely hold out, jackson has some really cool stuff around it, and utah does as well that is relatively easy access. i think colorado probably has the most options but usually the least snow and most unstable snowpack, especially that time of year. probably can't go wrong with any of them, do you have friends at any of these places? having someone you trust to show you around is definitely a big factor when it comes to touring in new areas.

thanks for the good answer. yeah, i will have a person who can show me around for sure. i'd prefer to buy my tickets and set a plan well ahead of time though for the sake of planning/prices/taking off work

but if chances are that there'll be some good stuff to find regardless, im happy

Maybe a few of you can help me out. I am and have been really interested in touring. I have no former experience in A/T but decided to try it out this winter. But here's the twist, I'm in mountainous Ohio, and have no gear. I've been looking into bindings and skins but don't want to have to get new boots. For skis I will probably get used opus's or any other semi beat ski and have tecnica demon 130 boots. If anyone could shed some light on skins and bindings, my first choice are look xm 16's but am open to ideas. Since I will be in Ohio for this winter but then moving out west I am not overly concerned with taking an avy course or getting a beacon and probe, just a friend to ski with. Any help/ advice is appreciated, will this even work? Thanks!

Binding wise those woul. Be a good choice. I'm sure you know but if not it's a salomon/atomic gaurdian which is a grey freeride binding and will also work with your boots. Ski wise I would not choose an opus. Go somthing a little lighter and narrower. You will appreciate it on the way up and in ohio you won't need a big fat ski.

Yeah man, that's cool, just put yourself and others at risk for a season and then move. Should work out fine.

Posts like this freak me out because this is a lot of people these days.

i'm not overly concerned w/ bro becoming ohios 1st and only avvy victim
perhaps 2 maybe 3 slopes more than 25 degrees w/ a long enough sustained pitch to worry bout
stay out of creekbedish terrain traps and i'd think youd be fine
terrain is always the unchanging consistent.
it really isn't that hard to back country ski in terrain
watch the roof avalanches on the ones steeper than 6/12
gots our $$$ in to head back to the mnt carlyse going to get our tour on
the presidential touron week
been eyein this bad ass slide path on the way out n way in


good 4 or 5 ker bout at the end of the one long ass dayer range of the hut.
will see if conditions warrant an attempt

Perhaps I should have clarified, I will be skiing somewhere heavily wooded under 200ft of vert and maybe a 30% grade on a good day with minimal snowfall. I am not going off to CO 14ers bright eyed and bushy tailed with no experience whatsoever. Before I am on any terrain bigger than a sledding hill I will get all necessary equipment and training and go out with more experienced people, not alone. Where I am is somewhat lacking in beginner avy courses, and online courses don't fill me with confidence, I would prefer to learn from a pro.

That being said I completely understand your worries having inexperienced kids hauling ass around the BC in dangerous snow conditions none the wiser.
If you have any sources on where I can read up on safety and proper gear I'm all ears, I won't pretend I'm an expert on the subject I just love skiing and want to get my feet wet before I hit the big shit. Apologies for the wall of text

And yet, and if you don't have the basic information as to how to find out what the snowpack looks like, what that means, what is a dangerous slope and what isn't, what a supported looks like, route finding principles, and a whole slough of other things, you probably don't know how to find and safely access BC terrain that isn't susceptible to avalanches.

Then, even if the individual in question does manage to play it safe, as you point out, there's the human element leading to people pushing it to places they shouldn't be, at which point they have no gear and no methodology and either kill / injure themselves or someone else below them.

I mean even if this dude is truthfully only accessing super low risk terrain and will never be anywhere sketchy I'd still say he should have a shovel / probe / beacon just in terms of best practices and in case of NARSID or whatever. Also, if you're skinning for the sake of skinning, might as well do some beacon practice.

But yeah as far as courses go there's no point in the online one, you have to learn outside in the snow, whether it's from an instructor or someone experienced you're out with.

If you have any sources on where I can read up on safety and proper gear I'm all ears, I won't pretend I'm an expert on the subject I just love skiing and want to get my feet wet before I hit the big shit. Apologies for the wall of text

Yes I have the 130s and they're fuckin awesome boots. Heavy and the walk mode kind of sucks but they're pretty much my ideal do it all resort & short tours boot. They fit almost exactly like a Lange but wider, the liner is fucking awesome and the shell actually keeps you warm and dry. Basically it is just about a perfect progressive downhill boot that also can climb.

Now, it's worth mentioning that I had to nerd out on the design and take the boot apart to shave the inside of the upper cuff because of the molds they used causing spreading through the stride (some bigger guys cracked their uppers because of this) but once I did (took about 20 mins for both boots) it really improved the walk mode's stride and I don't feel like it's about to crack at all. It still sucks but it sucks slightly less- however it you're using low tech bindings it doesn't matter as much since the binding gives you the range anyways.

If there's anything specific you want to know, fire away. I'll do my best. Definitely a great boot but it depends on what you're looking for.

I'm looking for an everything boot like you mentioned so that sounds good. Iv got dynafits and am a smaller dude so I would go with the 110s. I'm a little worried about the lack of walk mode/not a great walk mode. I'm getting them for free so I'm definitely not going to complain but iv hated touring in boots too oriented onwards downhill. Iv got guardians, pivots and dynafits so the fact I can use them in all those bindings is a huge plus.

They're softer than they say they are. I'd go with the 130 unless you're really light or want a softer boot, especially if they're free!

If you're actually going to get them though, let me know and I'll shoot you a PM with a link to the thread I had on TGR about the process of grinding the inside of the upper. You'll want to do that. Only increases the range a smidge but it makes it way smoother & decreases the likelihood of it breaking too. Super easy and way worth it. I don't know if I'd want them for every kind of touring (mostly super long tours or multi-day hut trips, etc) but goddam- they feel so good on your feet, and ski like a little softer/wider/warmer/drier langes downhill- which is fucking awesome IMO.

i mean im 5'10 and a solid 140 so would i really need the 130? im in a 110 boot right now and its fine. i would do a few long tours but nothing more than 5 miles a day and a few k vert, probably no hut trips this year unfortunately. definitely pm that link, that be rad
