I've been noticing lately that there are a few people on here who are into touring and earning their turns.  Where are you from, where are you touring and whatchagot for touring setups? 

I'm from mass but tour all over the EC and also when I go west for vaca (usually UT/BCC/LCC).  Mostly in VT along the green spine though while I'm home.  Right now I'm on Whitedot Redeemers quiverkilled for Plum Guides, but my 12/13 ON3P Billy Goat Tours should be on my doorstep by tomorrow- and will be my go-to touring skis for the majority of the season.  My boots are Dalbello Virus Tours with cochise top straps grafted on as well because I hated the stock top bail. 

So what's up with you, oh rando beasts of NS?

buzzedIs there any snowshoes that a ski boot can clip in too? I want to get in to Touring but I really dont want to get a whole new set up .


Slowshoes are miserable, and you'll want a boot with a dedicated walk mode

shrEddieI am trying to plan for next season. Last season I toured on bentchet's and adrenalines and I don't want to use either of those next season. I am definitely buying katanas and p18s for an inbounds ski, and was thinking of buying a full tech setup as well. I could get a good deal on some bd's and vipecs, but it would still be alot to spend on skis in one season. this thread has gotten me thinking about the cast system. That would probably be cheaper than a full setup, and obviously better for skiing.
In all of your opinions, would the cast system hold up to 130+ days skiing inbounds at alta/the bird and touring the rest of the wasatch. Probably 60/40 inbounds vs out. I'm 215lbs and hopefully will be sending huge cliffs left and right, so I'm looking for the burliest set up I can find.


Why dont you want to keep the skis or bindings?

You say 'hopefully will be sening huge cliffs'.. Do you already send or do you dream about it? ;)
Nobody can comment on your question if the cast system will hold up 130 days..nobody (except the cast team) had been a full season on them since people got their set later this winter.. Lots of info on TGR, full of pros and cons.

Well being as Chickering-Ayers shreds the world tour with his casts on to make a point as to how bomb proof they are I'm pretty sure they can handle a lot that you throw at them.

Theres a whole thread about them on TGR. A lot of people that bought them complain about slop in the toe piece.

Yeah interesting system but making it non backward compatible is an issue I think. It looks like a great system I think but the lack of compatible boots will hinder sales.

I think develipment will more follow the tech standard route but attemp to make the bindings more like an alpine binding. Any one can clip into an alpine binding and creating a tech setup with that ease of use will take a lot of the fear away from tech I think. I really think the Amer bindings you see coming next season will be the ones which really open tech up to more skiers.

Hello friends,

Looking to buy my first at bindings. I am a advanced skier. They will be on my all year pow ski set up. They need to be able to handle 20+ days a year of hucking cliffs(NOT massive 20footers)
They'll be for a 115 underfoot ski
I'm 6' 185 lbs. usually ski around a 8 din. Would like a large option

Evo seems to be having a nice sale
And does anyone have experience with the adrenalines?

So what binding ns?

I really like the Trab binding, but you are right. They only make 1300/1500 next year so no boot maker will make compatible boots for that. They will wait and see what other brands have in the lab.

Marker was spotted testing their tech binding. It had something like a normal Jester heel piece with risers..

A safety release on the tech toes + the Warden heel piece with risers = what we can expect from Salomon&Atomic?

Yes. I think they are great. I put some miles on em... hucked over 30ft cliffs, and skinned 3500ft (a number of times) up with them. There are plenty of reviews in previous pages on this topic and this binding. There have been fewer negative comments on this binder than others. If you find a deal on em, why not?

On a list of things I would never buy, A Salomon touring binding is up there with cock sharpener and teste microwaving underwear. No offense to anybody who is interested or bought Guardians, but Salomon and touring go together like two dicks and no bitch imo- find yourself in serious shit.


I will never, ever trust Salomon again. I don't care what the fuck they come out with or how rad their next tester is tbh. They could have Candide test it shredding Olympus Mons and I wouldn't give a shit. Don't mind me though, my reasons are mine and mine alone.

Well until their glaringly defective product almost kills you (and instead cripples you for life) because it's a huge piece of shit that they threw into the marketplace anyways and then they sic their blood sucking lawyers on you to follow you around trying to frame you as a frivolous sue-happy asshole I'd say you got off easy. ;)



Oh the stories I could tell you... But I digress. Like I said I don't expect anybody to share my distaste for them, but I do reserve the right to say Salomon is a bunch of shady cunts and I'd absolutely curb stomp the guy(s) who almost killed my friend if I knew who they were to this day. It's kind of a shame I am such a huge fan of Cody Townsend... I want to be stoked on his projects so bad because he's fkn awesome but I just can't bring myself to let go of the butthurt that comes from seeing the corporate side of Sally in it's full wartime regalia. It still makes me so fucking mad when I think of how shit went down.


Anyways, I heard Marker is coming out with a new touring binding and that is awesome. The F12 is perhaps one of the most overlooked and best touring frame bindings out there right now. If they had a low tech model too they could really take a ton of the market share given their distribution network and stellar touring binding rep.

Does the fact that the new bindings are half atomic help huck? I understand your feelings for salomon as we have had that discussion before But maybe with atomic being involved it's worth a look. I don't expect you to be buyin them anytime soon but be assured a lot of testing and research has gone into this So hopefully there will be no repeats this time amer go tech.

Ha, Atomic is Salomon, i.e. Amer Sports.

IMO the Atomic brand has a better ski and boot line... but the binders are one and the same.

Was going to hit up some peaks on Catamount glacier, switched days off and everything, was racing to get there lastnight and some dumbass tourist crashed n they had to close the highway to radium so i couldn't make it. tried to do the approach to the hut but it was pitch black bushwacking and then 3km or glacier travel so had to bail. my partner went in a few hours earlier solo and bagged 4 lines. so little jelly but atleast someone got something in.

I need a recemendation for a novice AT binding. On the east coast, so I won't be ripping too hard, mostly steep shoots in the spring. Because of that weight is a big factor for me. I don't want to have an extra 10lbs on me when my skis are on my pack. It would also be nice to be able to use it at the ski area too.... Must be a pretty common binding so I can find it on TGR for

Just go buy F12s. Easy, sturdy, low and stiff. Work just fine as alpine bindings and tour well also.

No they've been around for a long time but have for whatever reason been mostly overshadowed by the Dukes, which I actually think kind of suck personally. The F12s are stiffer, lower stack height, slightly better pivot point, (I believe they're lighter too but can't remember exactly) and the same basic toe and heel as the Griffon (again, iirc). They also make an F10 for those seeking a lower DIN.

Check them out. They're pretty awesome. Probably the best frame touring binding out there IMO and I have no idea why they aren't brought up more often.

Calling Boax, or any other cham dwelling ski bums. Thinking of going over seas this winter potentially. Was wondering what kind of deals on accoms you can get in the area, also fine with living somewhere else cheaper as long as there is skiing in the area not requiring driving. Was thinking March April May or just April May. what should I be budgeting for accoms, or if you have some better ideas, was toying with buying a van or truck and living in it dirtbag style I'm pretty flexible and have no schedule really.

Yeah Chamonix is more expensive than average (I think, not lived anywhere else in a while). Under €550 a month including bills is pretty good going for an annual lease, or under €650 just for winter. I got lucky and shared an appartment at €500 each for my first winter, second place €500 annual (shared house), third €450 annual (studio). If you're showing up for just a month or two then expect to pay even more.

You always have to drive or take the bus in Chamonix, so if that's a concern look elsewhere. Courmayeur or La Clusaz would be more affordable alternatives kind of near here, and have more easily accessible terrain for someone new in town, and a nicer atmosphere in town too. Verbier is expensive but a little easier-access than Chamonix's terrain.

I like my Salomon Guardian 12's. Only issue is they don't go full flat but it's hardly noticeable unless you're doing long approaches.

Airbnb is a pretty good bet for deals outwith the busy periods (see http://www.lornecameron.com/2014/school-holiday-dates-1415/ ). I have a few friends who own holiday apartments and mostly use Airbnb.

Otherwise, sign up for http://www.chamsocial.com/ , Chamonix's English-speaking mailing list with lots of property owners who could do a deal directly. Don't turn on any email functions though or you'll get 50-100 emails per day, mostly nonsense!
