Touring/AT NSers...

I've been noticing lately that there are a few people on here who are into touring and earning their turns.  Where are you from, where are you touring and whatchagot for touring setups? 

I'm from mass but tour all over the EC and also when I go west for vaca (usually UT/BCC/LCC).  Mostly in VT along the green spine though while I'm home.  Right now I'm on Whitedot Redeemers quiverkilled for Plum Guides, but my 12/13 ON3P Billy Goat Tours should be on my doorstep by tomorrow- and will be my go-to touring skis for the majority of the season.  My boots are Dalbello Virus Tours with cochise top straps grafted on as well because I hated the stock top bail. 

So what's up with you, oh rando beasts of NS?

so even with the frigid temps (6 degrees at the top) we went out in search of soft snow. went skiing in the baker bc, too secret bowl and found a very good 8 inches or so on a hard layer. rarely felt the layer up top. then at about 3900 feet things got a bit sketchy with low snow. the last 800 feet or so was basically survival skiing to the creek bed below.

If stability stays the way it has I'd be pretty open to hit a couloir if we don't get 2 much snow. friends of mine hit Grand Daddy on the parkway today but I'm open for anything.

Had an awesome tour in the Northern Bridgers today. Skied 3 new lines i've never been down before. It was DEEP too. Gonna try and get a google maps route picture up tomorrow when I have some time. Stay safe guys!

how are the instabilities around nelson? i know there are some pretty strong facets and hoar. thinking of heading from bham to nelson this thursday-monday.

storm is coming in wet here so hoping it gets up there and stays cold. we would probably spend a day at the resort then spend most of our time filming the pillow zone very close to the area.

drail mentioned the name, and i promptly forgot. but anyone have beta from that area or aspects like what we are headed for? iv been watching cac but it be nice to hear from someone who has skied around whitewater recently.

I'm trying to figure out my plan for this storm. I don't think I can skip class til friday, thinking about alpy BC dawn patrol wednesday if it stays cold. Heading north does sound appealing though

not sure how things are down there, but I assume this new snow is not going to bond well. (nothing to really worry about as far as stuff stepping down to deeper layers, so it'd just be the storm snow that will go). The Nelson area is forecasted to get more snow than we are up here in Revy. From today till Wednesday night we are forecasted to get up to 40cm while down around Nelson could see up to 60cm. I've got a party to go to on the weekend down there and might end up going down a few days early for some kootenay pass action if they do indeed get their 60cm.

Trash Chutes is the pillows on the ridge just out of bounds, with another (even better imo) pillow zone across the valley from the Glory chair on Evening Ridge. btw.

ya ok, i was thinking sunshine ridge so i was close haha. pretty sure thats where we will head. well if you do come down i will be down there with 3 guys, staying somewhere in town with a friend of ours. we have to do a fair bit of "work" for k2 so we will be pretty busy with skiing:)

oh and for the record skied greens basin sat w/ the wife
i personally couldn't find many lemons in that particular wind sheltered lower angled terrain
no collapsing, no cracking, wind slabs and cornices/test slopes took a lot of whompin to initiate failure.
haisties were failing q2 shear and energy and took a good tug to shear
I aint the only experienced turn earner in the wasatch who felt the high to extreme was over forcasted
as i was unable to find conditions that i would consider indicative of extreme or high instabilities.
it skied awesome and i'm glad your can't make decisions on your own w/out experts ass stayed away

Now I'm not doubting your personal ability, but I certainly would point out that just because you're good at this stuff doesn't mean you're invincible. The mountains will destroy us if they want to.

These guys knew what they were doing and got in a bad situation. So sure the above poster is being pretty blanket safety, but I wouldn't go so far as to think knowing your shit makes you completely safe.

You're out of line to do that.
He was posting a huge precaution. I've seen those reports. And it's strongly advising not to head out. People are idiots if they think they're better than that. Not only are they putting themselves at danger, but they're putting any type of friends and rescue crews in danger as well.

Be smart.
There's a huge predicted storm heading for BC, and even though it will look good, it's shit for the backcountry.
High temps, huge snow, all coming down on a pack of hoar frosted, dry snow. It's been incredibly cold here, with warmth and everything coming in, it's a no brainer that the risk is going to be high.

I wouldn't head out there after this storm, and I'll be advising all my friends to do the same.
However; family day long weekend is coming, I'm sure there are going to be a ton of idiots with no gear proper knowledge heading out there.
Just because it dumps, doesn't mean it's a green light for everything everywhere.

If anything, I'm staying on low degree terrain, nothing into the chutes. Or anything where a high risk would be.
I'm planning on a midnight tour on Saturday under the full moon down in Fernie.
Probably won't be a huge expedition, I just want to get out there for the experience.

the few hundred people who choose to tour this weekend in elvated avvy danger and and the current multiple pwl snowpack for the most part are neither idiots or assholes
there were several avvy 2 and 3 classs and groups out and the people in them are passionate and trying to gain knowldge.
best way to learn about instabilities is to get out and observe them
avalaunches are not random acts of nature like lightning strikes nor do they have the abilities to occur in any place
If you want to use your lack of risk tolerances which may or not be skill based to call other idiots or assholes it shows your ignorance
but if calling us derogatory names makes you feel better about you and the decisions you make
i'm still stickin with the fuck you line

Your story of you and your wife making one run without dying is anecdotal. The fact that there is 2 dead people, a list of people buried, and a giant list of avalanches says otherwise. And it's great that you've been in the backcountry a few times, but thanks, I'll take the advice of those that are experts in forecasting and avalanche knowledge, and get paid to interpret it for us mere mortals.

Also, I spent Th,F,Sa,Su with a UDOT avalanche forecaster, 3 Avy 3 trained guides, and a Snowbird patroller, who all agreed that conditions were much to high to be out there.

It's not a thing of knowledge, it's just knowing what's safe and what's not.
Sure, I'd go out and observe an unstable snowpack, best way to do that is dig a pit. But if it's unstable, and goes easily, I'd back out.

It's like when a hurricane or something rolls through the coast. People are advised not to go outside, those who do, usually get hurt or worse.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if I heard someone died this weekend in the backcountry.
I've heard it before, usually they're inexperienced, or not prepared.
Don't let that headline be about someone you know.

I just want to point out that this attitude would be like locking yourself in your basement until the govt. terror rating dropped back down to orange. Just because danger is high doesn't mean there is nowhere safe to play and you should hibernate until someone knocks on your door and tells you everything is safe.



Just sayin- Might not want to just generalize like that. There are literally tons of NSers that make worse decisions every single day (and have posted them here on many occasions) and I haven't heard you critique them once- this dude is a 20+ year guide, has seen with his own eyes every single layer fall and has intimate knowledge of the terrain above and beyond a blanket rating intended for tourons.



Trust me. He knows what the rating system means and is experienced and smart enough to decide for himself if the sky is going to fall. He does not in any way, shape or form need you or anyone else critiquing his decisions... Unless you're saying you know more than he does, which I would seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeriously doubt.



Not trying to be a dick, but you guys are making massive generalizations just to make them and it's making you look dumber than you are.

hiked up a little hill near me, skis on pack and all, then skied down and found a few good lines. going back today after school to the same spot, and gonna try to do something while i am in north conway this weekend. not touring like what you guys are doing but its a start i guess. id love to get a legit setup and do more, but living in massachusetts that probably wont happen until college ahah

I just got out for a few days in the West Yellowstone area, and the snowpack is definitely pretty spicy right now. We experienced pretty widespread collapsing and cracking on a layer of facets about 16-20" down, and in pits that layer failed at ECT14 with a Q1 shear at multiple elevations. The most notable event was when I was standing on top of a ridge explaining to a couple new people I was with why we weren't going to drop in at this particular spot, and the snow on top of the ridge collapsed. A couple minutes later, we noticed a 100'+ crack that had arced across the entire starting zone of the chute in front of us.

Anyways, here are a couple photos from the weekend, if I can get them to show up. I only carry my iphone on me most of the time these days, so bare with me.

aint much safety in #ers in the side or back country only more difficult group dynamics
i'd bet craig had more snow stability assesment skills and experience than that whole group combined
aint an expert probably never be one
only guidin been in the pursuit of fishes
a chemically dependent skibum with a bit of formal avvy edjumacation and a decade and 1/2 of seasons
doin it stivin to do it again tomorrow
if ya got a few duckets throw em craigs families way
