Touring/AT NSers...

I've been noticing lately that there are a few people on here who are into touring and earning their turns.  Where are you from, where are you touring and whatchagot for touring setups? 

I'm from mass but tour all over the EC and also when I go west for vaca (usually UT/BCC/LCC).  Mostly in VT along the green spine though while I'm home.  Right now I'm on Whitedot Redeemers quiverkilled for Plum Guides, but my 12/13 ON3P Billy Goat Tours should be on my doorstep by tomorrow- and will be my go-to touring skis for the majority of the season.  My boots are Dalbello Virus Tours with cochise top straps grafted on as well because I hated the stock top bail. 

So what's up with you, oh rando beasts of NS?

191 caylors/look p18's/day trekkers. first year touring. i'll be touring around southwest montana. got the trekkers to fit great inside my p18's despite what the majority says about them so hopefully they won't be as bad as people say they are.

Did you buy any of jondrums' mounting tools (drill bit, drill guide, etc) he had for sale on there to mount the inserts? Can you speak for the quality of the tools?

And like I said, never toured, but when you guys are touring across a flat part do you get much of a glide going on, or is it more or less walking with skis on? I could see the people behind the guy breaking trail getting a nice glide going...

i got a drill bit from him. no complaints.

as for this thread, gonna be riding fernie/kick area this year. 185 g3 zenoxide, 196 lhasa pow, 185 jjs, all with vertical FT12s round out my touring quiver. boots: bd factors, might get some vulcans this year too.

From Washington. Tour around the Cascades and up into BC...Bindings are Maker Duke EPF's on Surface New Lifes...Not the lightest setup but I usually tour for jumps, pillows, cliffs, etc. so I like to have heavier/wider setup. I would love to get a pair of dynafits for longer tours and over night trips though.

they "fit" fine, the issue is that the trekker can't go to a flat position as it hits the dildo. still usable, but you don't got down fully on flat sections.

First Season out west, living in Nelson BC.

Have surface live lifes with dukes, and will be mainly doing the slack country around whitewater and a couple day trips up to kootenay pass.

I took my AST 1 last year, but am taking it again with selkirk wilderness skiing in january as part of a school course. (sroam program)

Looking forward to seeing you guys around

Kicking Horse BC. On Epic Planks Crop Dusters with big fat 18 din bindings, Alpinist skins and Trekkers. Not light, not very fun going up, but still way better than trying to bootpack my way through waist deep snow. And with kind of slackcountry we have at KH, totally worth it to have the freedom to get into any kind of trouble I want on the way down.

Thinking about finally making the upgrade to a Dynafit setup.

Not the lightest setup for the way up but it's bomber on the way down. If you have a 300mm BSL or smaller you can step right in.

I like how everyone tries to justify heavy ass setups. If your legs are spent from hauling 2kg extra weight per foot 1500m vertical for 5 hours then it doesn't matter how solid the setup is for the ski down, you're going to ski like shit.

I like my heavy setup. The slack in my area is all short tours for burly lines. I'm sure one day I'll invest in something lighter for those adventures that my gear isn't designed for, but for now I'm perfectly happy dragging the extra weight around.

I dont have a grand laying around that id be willing to throw down on dynafits and lighter skis...

also spinning on dynafits is a no go. skiing around these parts on dynafits would mean taking things a little slower and making it realll smooth. only reason hoji gets away with what he does is cuz he is soooo damn smooth. no way in hell i would even think about skiing dynafits on some of the shit around here.

but id love to get a pair for long days. there is so much easy access thats 20-30 minute skin i dont really see it being worth it at this point. im young, i can handle it.

My touring set up is my sled. Takes me anywhere.

From where I can't go, I bootpack.

I do most stuff solo.

Wasatch is where I ski. Easiest access anywhere, hands down. Best lines, best access, best snowfall combo possibly in the world.

Got tired of seeing guys fly by me up the hill as I bootpacked, so i decided to drop the coin on my first touring setup this season. 2012 Seths with guardians. Gonna be a heavy setup, but for the shorter touring I'll be doing and my aggressive style of riding, it should be primo. Gonna be working the whistler and baker backcountry, then some of big white and revelstoke later in the season.

I was chatting with one of the more talented at skiers on my mountain. He recommended "waxing skins". What does he mean by this. HOw does one wax skins. +k to a solid answer.

The same way you hot wax skis, but only use a little wax then brush them out. I've never felt the need to wax mine, but if yours aren't gliding well and/or there is snow sticking to them it's worth a shot.

Just got into it this year, havent gone yet but ARGs/trekkers/G3 skins

I figure it wont be the easiest setup for skinning but fuck it id rather surf pow on the way down then have an easy skin up

skinned up bridger yesterday and today on the caylors and day trekkers. the trekkers are working great so far (we'll see how long that lasts) and the caylors were a blast coming down. can't wait to get some longer tours in and ski some deep snow on them.

I really like my MFDs; they're heavier, but they also feel really solid and I didn't have to get new boots/bindings. Plus I primarily use them inbounds as a pow/everything ski so $200 + skins was reasonable for a first touring setup that I feel really confident on in any situation (equipment-wise at least!). It's probably not that big of a deal, but my buddy's griffons felt flimsy in comparison.

Also, my stride felt way more natural than I was expecting and a bit farther back (more natural) than the griffons. My only complaint is that my Dalbello Rampages definitely aren't built for touring, but that's a result of the situation and they're also on their 5th season.

I'll be on Blogs with FKS/MFDs in Tahoe.

As my name would suggest I'm representin Idaho! I do so on 179 08(ish) Seths, traditional camber, with marker barons and BD skins. Its a heavy ass setup so I've been preseason training pretty hard! My university gym offers a weekly downhill ski conditioning class, along with two extra training days I'm feeling prime for the upcoming season. I've also just finished the first half of my Level 1 avalanche certification, after two 8 hour days of sitting in a class room talking about backcountry skiing I'm more than ready to shred, safely of course!

been skinnin around the wasatch range in utah for a few years now..been on some beater trekkers but finally stepping it up this year to a binder..gunna be getting the new tyrolia adrenaline any day now..I'll chime in when i've got a few tours on them

nope. i adjusted mine so that even when the climbing bars aren't up my heel never touches the dildo. all it takes is a little messing around with the trekkers and they'll work fine with the fks/look heelpiece.

I've walked a bit on 185 Nordica Patron with Dukes. Not light, but very awesome on the way down.

Last season I had Ace Of Spades on my feet, and they were awesome allround boots, and they were fine to go skinning with. However, they were a bit too big (or not small enough), and I have new boots for this season, the Patron Pros. They're fucking awesome, but since they're essentially raceboots with some dampening in the heel, I'm not sure they'll be very nice to tour with.

I bought the whole kit even though I work in a machine shop and don't really need them.  I'm glad I did.  The guides are incredibly helpful when tapping, and the step drill is very nice as well, just make sure you're clearing the flat bottom of the bump stop after every hole or your depth will be off. 

I definitely recommend buying the whole kit.  All the pieces are nice stuff, will last you the rest of your life and it's totally worth having as a full kit- together- all the time, y'know? 

As for flat touring, yes you can get a decent glide on if it's an established skintrack, but that depends on your ability, gear, balance and load too.

Having a hard time letting go of my CoombaCK / Fritchsi Freeride Pro combo from a few years ago. Its done me incredibly well both climbing and riding. May not be the most bomber binding, but thats not my style riding in the BC.
