Touring/AT NSers...

I've been noticing lately that there are a few people on here who are into touring and earning their turns.  Where are you from, where are you touring and whatchagot for touring setups? 

I'm from mass but tour all over the EC and also when I go west for vaca (usually UT/BCC/LCC).  Mostly in VT along the green spine though while I'm home.  Right now I'm on Whitedot Redeemers quiverkilled for Plum Guides, but my 12/13 ON3P Billy Goat Tours should be on my doorstep by tomorrow- and will be my go-to touring skis for the majority of the season.  My boots are Dalbello Virus Tours with cochise top straps grafted on as well because I hated the stock top bail. 

So what's up with you, oh rando beasts of NS?

I had a friend with CRJs and Dynafiddles. He said that they were too soft for the rigid tolerances of the bindings and often prereleased because the ski flexed too much. I would try a stiffer ski, but then again I have not had any bad luck with my Jeffreys and they are a playful ski on the softer side.

I have the original CRJ's (the softest ones) and i've definitely pre-released several times from the skis being so soft. they have alpine bindings on them though so i can't really compare. love the skis though. too bad they're getting discontinued after next season.

yeah, I had Dynatif FT's on a soft pair of skis last winter and I think it was the leading reason I released out of the bindings. It was just an impromptu set up though and I'll be rocking a stiffer whip next winter.

The thought crossed my mind at one one point, and then I got busy and forgot about it. In hindsight I should have put it in just for the hell of it but oh well. Glad your stoked!

Hey guys, looking to get into my first touring set up. Right now looking at two options and wanted to see which one you guys thought looked better.

I ski big mtn and side country at resorts all the time but looking to get into the touring game now. I'm currently in Wanaka New Zealand but will taking the skis back with me to Utah.

I'm 6 ft and 190 lbs, 3+ skier type

These are the two options:
1) Kingswood Rocket type (134/112/124) - 187 length

2) Atomic Coax (137/105/128) - 183 length

Both skis come with barons. I'm leaning towards #1. Seems that's more a pow ski while the Atmoic is all mountain.

Any opinions?

183 in a rockered ski is really short for someone of your size IMO.

Agreed with the other advice. If I was you, I would go 190+. Check out TGR gear swap for used but good combos on skis that size.

Thanks for the advice. Are you saying go 190+ for my height/weight or does this specifically benefit me for touring? I have gone high 180s before in a pow ski and been content.

Generally for touring you don't want to go too long- it adds weight and can make kick turns trickier. It really depends on what you priorities and preferences are though. I'm 5"6 and would be happy with a narrower ski in 170/180 for longer touring days and spring skiing. For slackcountry and deeper snow, especially if i'm hitting cliffs and pillows, i'd want something around 190. It would also depend on rocker specs as well though.

If you've been happy with high 180s in the past then you should be fine touring on that.

I meant skis! Whoops. I mean losing weight is never a BAD thing when it comes to touring if you plan on doing it for long days w/ smaller people but its not super important. Its also personal preference with length. Im 5'11 175 but ski on a 186+ on the EC, meaning not a lot of kick turns, but more tight trees. If youre going to be touring a lot (overnights), skiing a shorter ski (180 range) wouldnt hurt, but also you could buy a lighter carbon fiber ski you could ski it longer (190). It all depends on how you ski, where you will ski, how much you tour, your confidence level, and finally, budget.

haha thanks, I knew you were talking about lengths of skis. I'm 190 lbs from working out and "bulking" as the gym bros say.

Going to go with the Kingswood, seems like a better option for me. Can't go wrong with some Kiwi craftsmanship. Thanks for the input guys.

It's on Old Glory in the Rossland Range. It's kind of a tradition to ski it on Canada Day. I have yet to do so... I was meaning to go up with Jeff on Saturday to hit it (when this picture was taken), but I ended up getting drunk Friday night instead. Oh well.

looking to get into it this season on the East Coast. Looking for some good terrain suggestions anywhere really, I'd love to take some trips and meet up with peeps. I'll be at loaf a lot too, which has a bunch of sick stuff opening up in Brackett Basin

Just read pretty much the entire thread, so much useful info in here.

Never skinned before, but skied a bunch of side country stuff that was all bootpacking last winter, and we have even more planned for the upcoming one so I just got some guardians. I think i'm going to mount them on faction royales I'm getting from my friend for super cheap. Still need skins, but it looks like i can get some decent ones from backcountry no problem.

Anyway I'm living in burlington and will be skiing that whole area, especially the mad river valley and stowe. It would be sick to meet up with some more people that want to get out there away from the lifts. I've lived around here for a while and have a bunch of spots already scouted out but I'm always looking for more.

So I'm in the market for a touring / wide on-piste setup now that I'm on the west coast, but as a converted EC park rat I'm having trouble deciding on ski length. I'm 5'9" 140ish, love charging as hard as possible and ski on 181s in the park. At first I was looking at something in the 184 range, but my roommate who does a lot of touring insists that I go shorter. Should I take his advice and go for something in the 176-178 range or go with something like 184-186?

Depends. If you're getting a ski with rocker you want to go longer. If you're getting a ski with no rocker, go the same as you ride for park. I'm 5'2" and I just got a pair of 174 Moment Bibby's. I also have a pair of 165 Salomon Guns that have full camber and wouldn't want to go longer on them.


It really depends on the type of ski you are lookigng for. FOr example, based off what you said you could either go for the Moment Ghost Train in 196 or the Governor in a 186. Both would fit your needs but are very different designs and lengths.

Hey frags, I'd say stick with your plan of low 180's. You certainly don't want shorter skis for pow unless you plan on AT racing in spandex in the alps. Also, a 196 would be a bit much. I'm 5'10", 170lbs and rock ON3P C&D 193 with dukes and swap between plum and STH16 on 191 Billygoats. I only have an inch on you but weight is more telling.

I bought these things for 100 bucks that strap into my normal alpine pow skis and they make them at skis. They are great. So I turned my pow skis and all mntn boots into at stuff for 100 dollars and the price of some cheap skins. I highly reccomend this if u dont wanna blow a 1000 dollars on something u will use 3 or 4 times a season haha

Lou, it sounds like you found a pair of DAYWREKKERS! (otherwise known as alpine trekkers) They work great for short approaches that have nice level skin tracks and not a ton of elevation gain. but if you push them, they'll push back

plus they're heavy and have a tendency to have everything possible go wrong. HOWEVER if you can't afford some burley AT bindings they're a decent option. plus you get to ski down on your normal setup which is nice.

They're not that bad, if you're getting into it and only doing a few days a season they'll do the trick. Just always carry a screw driver, spare screws and some duct tape, that way you should be able to fix most problems you enounter on the skin track.

changing which ski i tour on this year for something with a little more float...so getting new skins. what's people's opinions on the g3 alpinists (what i've used the last 4 years) vs. the BD ascensions and glidelites? also any experience with going mohair vs. nylon?

^^  I've got some BD ascensions. Few years old, bought um used. Love um. Maybe not the most glide on flatter valley bottom skin tracks. But on iced up ones they are awesome and stick to things many of my friends skins don't. I have used the G3 skins and really not a huge fan but it also could be just cause the ski I'm using is full reverse camber so not much skin on the track if its packed out.
