Touring/AT NSers...

I've been noticing lately that there are a few people on here who are into touring and earning their turns.  Where are you from, where are you touring and whatchagot for touring setups? 

I'm from mass but tour all over the EC and also when I go west for vaca (usually UT/BCC/LCC).  Mostly in VT along the green spine though while I'm home.  Right now I'm on Whitedot Redeemers quiverkilled for Plum Guides, but my 12/13 ON3P Billy Goat Tours should be on my doorstep by tomorrow- and will be my go-to touring skis for the majority of the season.  My boots are Dalbello Virus Tours with cochise top straps grafted on as well because I hated the stock top bail. 

So what's up with you, oh rando beasts of NS?

Well, not 100% sure as haven't been back there in a while and pics where going on are from October, the one just south of Moonraker, Dogtooth peak is 2m higher. If conditions allow, hoping to ascent the Moonraker ridge, drop to the moon/dog col and then climb Dogtooth peak. To bag both. May just wind up climbing Dogtooth though really hard to say until we get back there and see whats melted out in this warm spell.

Anybody know of any lines in Tahoe or Nevada that still have some snow? Gunna be driving/camping my way though both on my drive back to CO from the Bay Area.

just thought id throw this out there...got a pair of dynafit titans size 26 for sale...brand new never been used but only come with the touring soles, no alpine soles sorry. I will let these puppies go for a rock bottom price of 330. shoot me a pm if interested

So, I was talking with my lady friend today, and I thought I'd see what your guys thoughts about the subject are. I am speaking, of course, about zone secrecy. Personally, I think knowledge of areas should be shared amongst the community. The only thing better than finding a sick new zone is sharing it with fellow skiers so they can have experience the same stoke as you. I've been in some weird and awkward situations where people either get mad at me for talking about a zone (even if it's a really obvious slack country zone), or being a douche to me when I ask them for any extra info on a zone I've been eyeing up and wanting a bit more first hand knowledge about before I attempt to tackle it.

What is your guys thoughts about the subject? Are you guys for or against sharing information about certain zones?

I'm totally for sharing, and really don't understand the really pretentious attitude people have about "their" spots. Sure, we should all go out and find cool places on our own, but what's wrong with helping someone out? The worst thing that happens is another group (which likely is not anyone you told about the area) skis it the same day you do. No big deal, there's a lot of skiing to do outside the resorts!

I guess I'll speak for myself when I say I get just as much enjoyment out of sending other people out to really beautiful places I've skied as I get skiing them myself. I much prefer hearing about someone else's awesome day at an area I told them about to being a dick.

im fine with sharing and showing people to zones as long as i trust their abilities in the bc. bakers "secret zones" really are not that secret unless youre willing to tour for a bit. i dont really tell too many people about the secret spots who dont live here.

Sharing info? Yes.

Telling everything about the place from routes to and from, GPS coordinates, maps, etc. as in the case with a certain EC BC douchebag blog that got shit up on over on TGR- No.

There's a difference between sharing amongst your group of friends/community and just talking about shit on the internet to do it- which I think is wrong.

I still dont understand why anyone gives a fuck. Like someone else said, the worst case scenario is someone else skis it the same day as you. It is not like the backcountry will be shredded up by the time you get there

Honestly, where the hell do you ski? I'm guessing it isn't the EC because exactly that happens all the time. You guys with 3,842mi^2 of open bowl skiing surely have nothing to worry about but I personally didn't learn all this shit and hidden lines so I could tell someone else about it and never ski fresh there again. There are a shitload of hidden spots that people either stumble across or set out to find/make, and I likely was brought there by them. Imo it was never mine to give, so I just stfu go ski it and mind my own business. I don't really post TRs and I don't share a ton of info simply because I don't care to have everyone know, and I'd feel far more guilty if I blew up a friend's else's go-to so someone else I barely know would think I was cool.

Also one really has to wonder who really needs beta for EC BC locations. Anything steep enough to warrant consideration is probably a famous published line anyways.

I guess I just don't see the value in talking about shit like that. If it's not for safety reasons, I say talk is cheap. If it's for safety reasons though, hell yeah communicate- out in the Wasatch it's a whole different story than here though. 100% apples and oranges to be honest, trust me.

Also, there's something to be said for a quiet BC.

Yeah I mean I'd be lying if I said I didn't bring people out, or that I wasn't brought out to places by friends nice enough to do so, but I don't feel right in advertising where I was simply out of respect for the place. If someone is going to get there they'll get there, y'know? Most people looking for the easy info aren't the type to respect the privacy of a place anyways. It's actually a really weird dynamic that's tough to explain.

Yeah, east coast would be a different story for sharing beta. In British Columbia there is a lot of skiable mountain terrain and there is zero chance of everything getting tracked (slack country aside).

With the trend of more and more people going touring, I think certain popular zones could actually get 'too busy' here in BC. The slackcountry around Red Mountain has been getting busier every year to the point where some of my friends were saying that they had to go hit their lines on an inbounds pow day if they wanted it fresh. It's always a shame when you have to miss lift accessed powder to get your favourite slack line, but that's the way things go. Proper backcountry though (out west at least), I think that sharing beta is part of the process to help build a community of like minded people. If we get too secretive about where we are skiing, I'm not sure if we will make very many friends. I know that I have written off a few people over on TGR in my area because they are way to secretive about stuff. Getting mad at me for putting a picture up of me skiing a slackcountry line, refusing to give me help with directions to a small cabin that I've tried to find a few times and failed, etc...

That's definitely not true. Maybe if you're fixated on skiing one particular line and you don't like to see a single track while you're skiing it. But if you have a little bit of flexibility there were always fresh lines in the slackcountry weeks after a storm this past season.

I think "protecting" zones in the sense that surfers do is ridiculous but at the same time I'm not going to tell everyone I know that they should go ride a certain line and how to get there. I'll tell anyone who asks how to get somewhere or what a good line is in different conditions, mountains aren't private property (for the most part) and it's interesting to see how different people interpret and ski certain lines.

It's absurd to think that just because you frequent a zone that it then becomes "yours", if you found it, someone else will too. If anyone ever accuses me of poaching "their" zone I will lose my shit, it makes me mad just thinking about it. Luckily the vast majority of mountain people are friendly and willing to share info.

Birthday stoke!
I got up at 12:15a on Saturday to nail this mission on the SE couloir of the South Teton, skied from the top at 12,514ft...

We summited well before 9a and waited at least 90 min for the snow to soften. Kept skis on down 5k+ vert before patchy isothermic snow near the base gave way to too many fallen trees. Ended up being a 13hr car to car adventure, including major bush whacking, swamp trodding, and river crossing to find the trail home :)
Somehow I stayed awake the full 24hrs of May 11th, a birthday first I'm not sure that I ever need to repeat.

But yes, geography is paramount in this discussion and it shows when you look at it elsewhere too- take the EC and Wasatch treads on TGR for instance. The EC thread is all about NOT sharing sensitive info while the Wasatch thread is ALL ABOUT sharing the most exact and up to date info since it's such a massive difference in safety consideration for the terrain involved.

Also the massive influx of BC skiers has got all kinds of people who have no business being out there in the first place just saying fuck it and getting their saucerboy on, which is why I don't put too much "out there" for just anybody to see. It's a dangerous thing to do and I worry about people getting in over their heads because it's put out there as fun and awesome.

In regards to giving up spots, it all depends on the region you're in and the exact ski hill. At whitewater, with it being pretty small, most people know all of the good spots on the Summit side, Trash and Glory. (I didn't ski much of Silverking, I haven't even done white queen or 5 mile.) There are definitely spots that some people don't know about, but more often than not, people will show you how to get there and such. For the Ymir area, it's pretty basic as you can see the majority of the terrain from the lift. Evening ridge and whaleback are different, but I don't know much about that area.

I'm hoping to ski whitewater a lot more in the future, but it's looking pretty likely that I'll be in Japow next season, I'll have to do some trip reports on the touring there. I also just picked up some 195 hojis with adrenalin bindings and a review will be needed for sure.

I know that when I have friends come visit the first thing I do is take them to my favourite line in sprawlers. If I wasn't lazy I'd take them to lone pine or pillows, but there is plenty of inbounds terrain to be explored as well.

Well, came out a day early from the Dogtooth range. As we had predicted the cooler temps and the rain everyone got in town resulted in about 20-30cms of storm snow. It bonded real nicely to everything and allowed us to ski some real steep fun lines  in amazing quality snow, let alone for May! More pics to come as I just steel them from my friend. Couldn't get a memeory card for the go pro in time so no footage yet, hopefully will get out on some more mission in the next week or two though!.

Heres a quick taste of what we got to ski!

So, I finally picked up my Hoji's from the shop today. Yay! Started paying for them in February and ran out of money, feels nice to have them in my house (at least I can now stare at them until November).

They've got me thinking about what to do binding wise next winter. I'm going to have my Hoji's with Dynafit FT's on them, but I'm also going to buy a new ski for an inbounds charger/slack country hucker and it's most likely going to be a Bibby... the question is though... I have Dynafit FT's, Dukes, and STH's. Do I get quiver killers and set up my new Bibby's for Dynafit and STH, Dyanfit and Duke (is that crazy?), or just have the Dukes on them full time. This winter I had first gen Bibby's (186 soft flex) with Dyanfits and 2nd Gen Bibby's (190 stiff flex) with Dukes and it worked out great... maybe put the STH's on the 2nd gen Bibby's and use them as an early season in bounds rock ski, Dukes on the new Bibby's and Dyanfit's on the Hoji's?

Basically, the question is - is it crazy to use quiver killers on my soon to be new Bibby's for Dyanfit FT's and Dukes... Something about it seams unnecessary and wrong.

Not sure why I haven't been hanging out in this thread more all season.

I don't have too much stoke from the season but here's some pics of me and the pops from some late season Louise slack. It was his first time doing anything in the backcountry so I just showed him around Purple bowl one nice day in April.

I think I may have the world's heaviest touring setup, but I'm fat and slow anyway so whatever.

School doesn't allow for as much skiing as in the past and it looks like I may be done for this season, but I'll give you a shout next season for sure!

Quick question for people who tour on rockered skis. Currently i have some griffins on my volkl shiros that get the job done because i only weigh about a buck thrirty. However, if i were to slap some guardians on them and make them a touring set up, how would they do on the climb up? Since theyre basically flat would the skins have trouble gripping the ground? Ive only ever toured on cambered skis so im wondering if it will be a bitch to climb with flat/reverse camber skis

I toured on caylors (1mm camber/huge tip and tail rocker) and even on really shitty, icy, skin tracks i never really had that much of a problem. Now i tour on billy goats (a little more camber and less tail rocker) and i find it to be about the same as my caylors. with that said, it's different for everybody and it would probably be easier to skin on other skis but i never really minded it that much. just make sure your skins fit and grip well and you should be fine.

anyone looking to buy some guardians? i have an extra pair of smalls im looking to sell for $300. definitely have been very happy with my pair, touring motion is smooth, and they are very secure, hit cliffs and jumps on them without any worry.

It's not an issue as long as you have good grippy skins. If you're on flat camber skis climbing, I'd def recommend BD Ascentions.

Honestly you DO get better grip with traditional cambered skis, but it is totally manageable to tour on a flat base, early rise nose/tail ski with no real concerns. If you are on a highway with steep pitches you do need to put a little more upper body into it, but it's not so much effort that makes you lose anything on the day
