Touring/AT NSers...

I've been noticing lately that there are a few people on here who are into touring and earning their turns.  Where are you from, where are you touring and whatchagot for touring setups? 

I'm from mass but tour all over the EC and also when I go west for vaca (usually UT/BCC/LCC).  Mostly in VT along the green spine though while I'm home.  Right now I'm on Whitedot Redeemers quiverkilled for Plum Guides, but my 12/13 ON3P Billy Goat Tours should be on my doorstep by tomorrow- and will be my go-to touring skis for the majority of the season.  My boots are Dalbello Virus Tours with cochise top straps grafted on as well because I hated the stock top bail. 

So what's up with you, oh rando beasts of NS?

hoping to upgrade from my stupid fucking treckers. but i think ill wait to get new skis first bc ep pros aint the ideal touring ski haha.

It's becoming far more commonplace for people to just suffer through the extra weight and just use whatever they'd most like to be on when going downhill. 

I know a guy whose touring setup is old Volkl 190cm Explosives and Dukes.  Dude is certainly suffering uphill but he's got what he wants to have at the top when he gets there... finally ;)

But damn.  Trekkers are brutal haha, props for going through hell to get to heaven though for sure.

Been thinking about a tour setup but I'd most likely use them to get back to the lift or get back to the base area. I might make the final push to get them once I move out west.

I just got the first tour of the season in yesterday, good times!. I have Surface new lifes and now just got a pair of moment Belafontes. Both mounted with dukes. Just got my first at boot. Dynafit mercury. Things are a dream. Awesome on the uphill and still nice and stiff on the down. Haven't hucked anything on them yet but planning on doing that this afternoon.

Going to be getting a nice dyno setup for spring couloir skiing though.

I have a 1 & 1/2 pairs of BCA Apline Trekkers. They work most of the time. If you have to ask me why they suck you've probably never used them, I prefer real alpine bindings in the backcountry. I don't weight very much and trekkers suck anytime your cross cutting the slope on edge skinning up a trail. Anyone over 160Lbs will torque out the flimsy attachment points pretty quickly.

My trekkers rating, 3/5, & 1/5 the day you get suck out in the back country with one broken trekker.

West Kootenays, BC here. 190 Bibby's with Dukes on them for the past few years, but this year I finally got a pair of Dynafit's to put on a pair of 186 Bibby's. Pretty stoked 'cause now I've got a inbounds/slackcountry set up and a 'backcountry' set up.

I thought about just putting downhill bindings on the Bibby's and getting something new for my full AT set up so I could have inbounds skis, slackcountry skis, and backcountry skis - but in the end decided it was probably overkill.

Just got 186 night trains with barons. Heavy set up but I'm sure ill enjoy the ride down. I was skiing 179 surface live lifes with barons and those weren't too bad. Stoked to begin my touring season tho!

Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Setup this year is FKS 120/140 Quiver Killler'd on Bacons, Quest 120's for boots. Only "touring" I do is a good half hour hike up a mountain near my house, shred down the back side of that and I'm in the parking lot of out mountain. I plan to do that a lot this season, plus explore some other areas likely with snowshoes and if I get into it I'll likely get a pair of Guardians for next year and toss another set of quiver killers in.

Barons on Countdown 2s (http://www.downskis.com/ski-specifications/countdown-2). Boots are the new Quest Max 120s. My buddy has informed me that Salomon are redoing the tech soles and rereleasing for next season, but he should be able to get them into his shop in January, so I'm hoping to upgrade to a tech binding mid-season. This is assuming the build quality on the tech soles is up to scratch this time.

I live in Revelstoke. Got out for the first tour on Saturday!

Just bought some Guardians for some ON3P Viciks (not tours). Ill use my alpine boot (Lange RX130) this year and look into a more pure set up next year depending how I find it this year.

Il primarily be doing it around the White Mountains and 'Dacks along with a little VT thrown in there.

Hoping to hit up the Slides this spring/when the snow is stable.

I'm living in Salt Lake and have been doing a good amount of pre-season touring in the Ogden/Huntsville area.

I'm on Billy Goats with dukes, and the whole way up I wish I could afford a pair of Dynafits.

Just out of curiosity...  Anybody interested in a pair of Virus Tour IDs in a 307mm BSL? 

Really thinking about getting rid of them for some new Sherpa 5/5s.  I'd probably let the Virus Tours go for like $250 + ship fwiw.  Anyways, shoot me a PM if you're interested.

Forgot to mention, they're a little custom.  I replaced the top bail with a cochise top strap for better adjustability. 

And I would be keeping my footbeds, as they are for my feet and not yours.

193 ehp's with dukes.

Lately I've been touring on the moon.  Maybe I should focus more on Ski season rather than psychedelic rock shows, oh well.

Oh and Tahoe.  But my touring normally consists of side access stuff.  If I wanted to get into the mountaineering aspect of things I'd for sure get tech bindings and some bd/dps ski.  I ski a lot in bounds at krikwood and surrounding areas and thus I don't need a 1700 dollar new set up.  I also tour in full tilts, not the lightest setup but I GET DA GOODS HOMMIE.

181 caylors with gaurdians, black diamond factor 130

186 viciks with some tele stuff a little bit lighter set up and easier on the body if im doing long tours.

iv been touring for the past couple season around the PNW and BC. Baker area mainly, i luv the easy access around here but the weather around here sets up some odd avy conditions.

Bentchetlers, Atomic skins and Barons. Just got it all this fall. Gonna be doing a lot of touring around Baker, and hopefully some around Stevens, Bachelor and Whistler too.

I'm on some 09/10 billygoats with radical ft 12s and some tlt 5's. I may be looking into a stiffer boot for next season though, as the downhill on the tlt 5's leaves a lot to be desired

I'm on Armada TSTs w/ Dukes. Sometimes wish I had dynafits on the way up, but I love that reassuring snap of the Dukes when I'm stepping in up top. Live in Park City, UT but do 95% of my touring in Big Cottonwood (Mill D, Butler Fork, etc). Done a couple pre-season tours so far- one up Snowbasin and the other a couple days ago poking around the Park City/Big Cottonwood ridgeline, hoping to get into some of the cooler stuff this year as long as the snowpack isn't completely fucked again.

i live in whistler and ill have two set ups this year, my new one and my one from last year. Last year i just used 184 bibby pros with mfds/p18s wearing fulltlts...wasnt much of a bc set up, but theyre good for resort and sidecountry missions

stoked about this year though , got praxis woo 2.0s coming along with radicals and dalebllo sherpa 5/5s

oregon. Bachelor, the sisters and broken top. Then to the south by crater lake bailey and theilsen. fritschi diamirs, garmont megarides and 2010 bacons. Far to heavy of a ski for long tours, im gonna switch to AR5s instead

This may sound like a stupid question (I'm expecting an answer of "there isn't") but are there any bindings good for tele/AT, which convert into good conventional bindings (that won't come to pieces in moguls)?

umm theres no such thing as tele alpine bindings haha, but yes there are some stronger AT options out there. MFDs are burly as fuck, probably stronger than even just having alpine bindings, and you can land switch with them. They are absolutely by no means a lightweight set up. The next step down would be dukes, theyre strong enough to handle mostly anything, but dont land switch with them, or youll be ripping your heals out in no time.

What's the best way to get into backcountry and touring? I'm going to take avy classes, but what is the next safe step? Should I just try and ski with some experienced backcountry skiers?

Armada JJ's with dukes on them... I hate the weight, but back when I bought the setup there weren't many options.

I bought Tecnica cochise this season though so I have the interchangeable heel and toe pieces so I'm hoping to upgrade to an AT binding.

Anyways, tons of good touring out here in CO. Anything from loveland pass to East Vail.

Odds are you'll probably befriend some potential touring partners in your Avy 1 (which you should definitely get). Other than that, the interwebz can connect you with other people. I've met some people through TGR, and once you really start skinning around in the backcountry you'll end up meeting/shooting the shit with other people. Depending on where you are I'd just get your Avy 1 done then post somewhere explaining your objective/where you're looking to potentially head and see if an experienced skier or group will let you tag along.

Im from Seattle and I usually tour around Stevens Pass, Snoqualmie or Baker.

Ive got 3 pairs of skis.
Rossi S1 (Rock skis)
4frnt turbos with sth 16(all mnt)
Hellbent with griffons (pow obviously)

I have skins for all and 1 set of trekkers.
