Adobe premiere - 2:35:1 - How to?

Does anyone have a work flow for this?

In FCP I usually add the widescreen filter then offset the image to make it work, I have not figured out how to master this in Premiere.

Anyone have any tips?

do the same thing.
Widescreen filter and then when exporting it is incredibly easy to set up the crop you want. Just use the crop feature and then look at the output tab to see if its what you want.

But, I noticed while using the widescreen filter it becomes attached to the image. So, if you adjust the image to fit the screen, the widescreen moves with it. Also, if you stabilize, the widescreen bounces around with the image like its part of the clip, not a matte on top. Am I doing something wrong? -_______-

Also, I tried about 100 times to export 235 out of adobe and could never get it to work. Guess I'm just a noob?

i downloaded a pack with a shit ton of crop bars. Its just a png file that i drop on the track above my video clips. That way I can adjust the clip and the widescreen mask is not affected at all.

As far as exporting. Don't ask me why i do it like this but i do.

Heath my export settings would actually work for you because they are 1080.

not sure if any of that helps. I learned from a ton of trial and eror so it's hard to put into words haha

Just use their crop guide to adjust the image. If you're working in 720 simply adjust the scale of the guide to 66.6 and change the crop settings (when exporting) accordingly.

My question is why not just overlay black bars to get the footage to 2.35, it seems the easiest way

The easiest and most versatile way I've found is just setting up your sequence to have the proper amount of pixels for 2.35:1. So, if you're working with 1080p footage, set up your sequence with square pixels as 1920x817.(817x2.35=1920). A simple solution and it allows you to mess around with the composition of your images.

protip for vimeo, you need to have an even second number (either 816 or 818) or else there is a weird white line on the bottom.

Create a null object or an effect track with the bars above your actual video on the timeline. In theory this should not move when you move arround your effect.

also, go with 2.4:1, it's closer to the true anamorphic 2.39:1 ratio anyways (it's also a nice number of 1920x800!)

How come, when I lay the PSD file on top of the timeline in Premiere, I dont see the bars? Shouldn't they appear naturally?

Polyvision is so fucking artsy, it makes people thin specs and black polarnecks grab their chin and say "hmmm", which is about the best possible reaction you can get, anymore cheerfull and they meant it in an ironic way.

Yeah, throw a PSD letterbox matte on the top layer while editing, and then crop 132 pixels North and South on export. Editing at 1920x1080 almost always gives better playback performance than a 1920x816 sequence, especially if you're outputting to an external monitor.

it is different if you go into the project knowing it will be this format and frame with this in mind. when well done, this format allows for wider views rather than shooting and then cropping to a tighter shot. if shot with the intent of converting to a wider format it does add a wider horizon.

true, but what I said still stands. you aren't gaining horizontal space, you are just learning to shoot wider.

I know that but I think people kind of subconsciously kid themselves and don't realize that when it comes down to it you're just hacking off part of your image for the sake of looking more artsy. It can work, but not when the skiers are losing their torsos and heads as a result. /end 2.35:1 rant

I think it's being used well this year, and that's sick. But man I hated it last year.
