Yah,

The snow isn't that bad on the EC. In some ways the Alps are worse since they don't blow as much and if its been a while since the last dump there seems to always be traverses and such left and right with bare spots. But the mountains themselves are way more restrictive than the west coast ones. Trees are thicker and trails get icier.

In terms of the mountains themselves the Alps are significantly better than all the west coast ones you can literally ski anywhere you want and every lift seems to access gnarly terrain but the snow just sucks and overall is worse than the EC although they probably get a few more powder days. So the west coast is the best overall. (Ive only been to Colorado Utah and Tahoe and I doubt anywhere is better than any of those 3 regions all things considered JH and Whistler included.)

How many ski movies are filmed on the east coast?

I see a lot of the major film crews (TGR, PBP, MSP etc) here in Whistler and surrounding area for large chunks of the winter. I think a very high percentage of their footage comes from here proportionate to other areas other than AK (again, west coast).

east: Trees. tons of trees,techy lines, hard icy landings in the park on every feature.

West:way more snow, longer runs, soft snow is easier on your body.

Midwest the land i ski. almost no natural snow most days it is icy and all the runs are about as long asmy arm home of crapy parks execpt granite peak and old ass lifts If i had an oppertunety to ski any where rather than be chosei about it

One good thing about East is that you're used to bad weather and ice and all that stuff, so you get stoked easily when there's a snow storm and good conditions or you go ski out west

When it comes down to it, I doubt there are many nsers that would rather ski east coast then keystone/ breck, Jackson, Tahoe, park city, etc.

let me start it:

you have to go east coast to really learn to ski, then you can bring your skills west and dominate the easy shit they have there. if you can ski the east, you can ski anywhere

yea i thought i was a pretty good pow skier when i still lived in sugarloaf...then i moved to whistler. whole different game, you cant just roll up to some huge bc line because you "can ski the east"

oh, of course not. it definitely takes a little practice, but the east is much better training for being a good overall skier than the west. why did you put ski the east in quotes?

Ehh, not really. As the guy above me said, the east coast does not train you for pow or big mountain, and it definitely takes more than a little practice.

It's easier to become a better park skiier on the west coast too I would imagine. With giant parks like keystone or park city and softer landings, it's less intimidating to get tricks on lock and once you've got them on lock, there's less chance of you falling if you take them to east coast parks.

I think you could argue that the east coast makes you a tougher skiier, but not better overall.

skiing pow isn't that hard. you just go. we could have different definitions of big mountain, but all the times i've skied the west (which, admittedly, isn't that many), i haven't found a single trail that was remotely challenging. including bowls and such, which is probably as close to big mountain as you can get without leaving a resort or going out of bounds.

skiing on the west coast doesn't teach you to ski on ice or to use your edges properly or how to ski tight, technical lines through the trees and such. for my money, the west has better skiing, but the east is harder. at least as far as staying in a resort goes.

Skiing powder isn't that hard on easier terrain, but just like any other aspect of skiing, it takes a lot of practice to get good at. Skiing steep and technical lines in powder, dropping cliffs, and landing in powder off of kickers are all skills that don't just come naturally to someone who doesn't have experience in soft snow.

I will agree with you that in bounds, most west coast ski resorts are not filled with overly gnarly terrain, and I am sure that any solid east coast skiier could handle pretty much all the terrain at summit county where I ski. The story changes however when you talk about resorts like squaw, jackson hole, or alta where an east coast skiier with no experience at these western resorts would be in way over their head.

i mean, i pretty much had no problem doing that stuff pretty much right off the bat. sure it took a couple of runs to adjust, but no big deal, really. i guess i was doing it in the alps, though, and not the west coast, but i feel the two are similar? but who knows, maybe squaw, JH, alta, etc. really are a whole other world

Haha dude where have you skied in the west? I'm guessing colorado area resorts because of your assumption that "bowls and such" are considered big mountain skiing. And come on of course the west has ice days that teach you to use your edges.
