Well would you call most of the sports in the X-games "professional" in the sense of Track, Swimming, and Ski Racing?

Skiing is way more professional than pole vault.

it bugs me sooo much when anti olympic skiers say that comps arent the way skiing should be going when they compete in all of the major comps.

You know... Good fucking point. I back the logic in this thread - If you're going to hate comps... fucking hate them all.

I guess the difference would be the judging, qualification process and rules. If you were going to differentiate between contests, you'd do so because of the philosophies and infrastructure behind them.

X-games is backed by the AFP's ruling system, and ESPN's wishes. Though they're most certainly interested in TV viewers, they also work pretty closely with Athletes. I would still completely agree that the X-games are a massive spin/flip-to-win huckfest, but they do certainly include athletes of all shapes and sizes.

I think the main worry with the Olympics is that its going to go the route of classic freestyle. You end up with robots from China who have been government funded to be gymnasts, and stricter-than-strict rules that eliminate all forms of creativity within the contest.

If you have to win, and you're under immense pressure from your country to do so... you might give up on the creativity and simply focus your life on being a robot.

Now, how different that is from the X-games... well only time will tell I'd say.

I really agree though, if you're going to hate contests explicitly... hate the X-games too.

The question of if everyone will be happy with the Olympics is a question of how it will be run. Its far too early to tell.

As far as comps go, there is no major difference. You want to compete? Play by the rules.

Athletes aren't allowed to have sponsors for some predetermined time around the Olympics. You mentioned the bike thing and there was the whole Michael Phelps scandal a couple months ago. Linsday Vonn wasn't wearing a Red Bull helmet in 2010, instead she had a contest for some rando on the internet to design her helmet design. However, I'm sure that whatever athletes can do to represent their previous or future sponsors, they'll do.

In actuality, a skier is volunteering oneself to rep the US olympic team to allow visa to make shitloads off of that.


I was listening to some marketing dude awhile ago talk about what Audi did before the 2010 olympics. They put millions of dollars into some national teams and was trying to figure out how they could reap the rewards during the olympic blackout. The solution was to make a video series to people could associate the skiers with audi and when they saw the olympic skiers, they thought audi. This is probably some sort of povlav's dogs approach.


I highly doubt the xgames is the annual paycheck for athletes. The money in pro contests isn't in the check handed to you on the poduim, it's from your own sponsors. I've been there was skier X got his $65 paycheck for coming in XXth at a dew tour stop. You don't go to contests to get paid on the podium, you go to get paid by your sponsors for giving them exposure.

Because the X-Games recognizes that slope style and half pipe skiing is a different type of sport than the olympic ones (moguls, aerials, racing ect.) It is a different sub culture, the athletes have different priorities, and many of the viewers want to see different stuff, creativity/ stlye. I agree that x games still turns the sport into a bit of a huck fest, but less so than the olympics will. The athletes currently competing in x games/ dew tour are the same we see in ski movies, they do not spend all their time training on slope courses.

FIS is an IOC pawn. They make money off the IOC's demands. Same with every other sport. It's not the regular governing body calling the shots, it's the IOC.

My point is they are both similar competitions. I feel that if one is pro-x, that person should be pro-olympics and vise versa. In the instahate thread, a skier that has won both pipe and slope (i think the only one) is anti-olympics but not anti-x. I don't get it. I don't see why he is drawing the line is drawn after xgames. So basically I made this thread to crowd source to find out how many people are pro-x but anti-olympics then attack from there.


Also, when I see a lot of these "film" skiers complaining that the olympics are taking their money, as if they deserve to be paid more even though they haven't done anything impressive in years. These skiers need to adapt to survive. If someone works a minimum wage job and askes for a raise, they need to make sure they can't replaced by 100 kids. There skiers hating are replaceable.

I don't get the hate at all. I simply can't see how any contest and or Olympics would affect my skiing?
I never cared much about contest in the first place and that won't change in the upcoming future. Sure it's nice to watch and I can get excited about it, but I won't go out the next day and say "damn, I really need to do the dub10 like Gus did last night."
There will always be people willing and focused enough to train for a certain event and probably win an Olympic gold medal and then there will be people just skiing for the fun of it, rather throwing some laid out 5s than doubles and triples...

And you know what? It's all fine. If you've fun learning new stuff, if you get excited on contests and if you wanna compete, then please do that. If you want to throw mellow tricks all day, then do that. If you want to shred pow and don't care about tricks at all, then do that. If you can do it all, even better! Simple as that. Hell, even if you want to race all day you can do it.

It's all skiing, it's all sick and the most awesome thing in the world. Period.
