Question/suggestions/Need help

Hi everyone, this upcoming season I'm planning to make a full length ski movie (around 20 to 30 min.) with mostly urbane skiing. My problem is that I don't know what ''style'' I will be shooting in.
Im thinking about two different styles for the moment,
''Stept look'' - very cinematic, shoot in 720, 30fps
or
''level 1 look'' - good vibes, shoot in 1080, 30fps..

I will not do a true copy of them, I've seen to many of those who copy stept, and it freaks me out..
So basically my question is, what do you like the most? Cinematic or ''The good vibe style''
Or do you have any other recommendations for styles?

If you want to follow this project, then feel free to like our FB page, but before you like, we are not the best skiers out there..

I wouldn't say that Level 1 shoots in 1080 30fps. They certainly have a good degree of cinematic quality and technicality. You see slow motion w/ 60fps or upward all the time in those movies, too.

Ofcourse, my bad.. Ofcoure if I will be shooting in 30fps, then some shots will also be in 720p, but what do you like the most? The way level 1 or stept film urbans?

you're deciding between 720/30 and 1080/30? do you mean 720/60 or are you just being silly?

i personally like the good vibe much more, i love ski movies that make me laugh, feel good, and get stoked on skiing...i find i dont enjoy the more serious stuff as much because i feel skiing should be fun rather than super serious

I think I've decided to some variable shooting when it comes to frame rates and resolution and in the editing I think I will go for the ''good vibe style'' thanks for feedback guys!

I like the good vibe style way more. Expecially if the level of the skiing isnt too high. The stept-style only works if you have a bunch of stylish gangsters or skiiers that throw doubles on a regular basis

There is no advantage to shooting 1080 over 720 on a DSLR. They only have 700-800 lines of resolution so anything above 720 is just stretching the image past its ability to resolve. Just shoot 720/60 and then choose your own style, no point copying others, even tho I know you said you weren't going to but the way you're already starting to think is the wrong way. Just go out and shoot.

Well yes when people refer to lines of resolution its TV lines so ya 720 is 720 lines and 1080 is 1080 lines and so forth.

Sorry I Said that badly, I know when it's 1080 there's 700-800 actual lines and the other 200 are moire? Or something like that, but when it's 720p does it do a true 720 lines? Or is that less too?

Canon DSLRs at least do a form of line skipping to get up to 1080 with only 700-800 lines of res

Yeah I realise what it does to get 1080, and how it isn't fully 1080, but when your filming 720 is it TRUE 720?

I believe so, true 720 has been around for awhile, not very many cameras are true 1080 tho.

damn i never knew that

so that brings up this question: what the hell is gopro doing to get their cameras to shoot 4k or at least 2.7k at 30fps? if 1080 isn't real 1080 on a DSLR then ?

It's something to do with taking full res photos and only using specific lines out of the image , until its 4k I think.

Sensor size has a lot to do with it, but the gopro shooting 4k/2.7k blows my mind, but itd be interesting to see what the actual resolution is but I'm sure it will be just like gopro 720/1080 vs real cameras with 720/1080, noticeable difference.

Yeah this isn't true at all. You get much nicer images out of 1080p than 720p. Both are stretched resolutions. 720 actually tends to have much more noticeable moire.

you were still wrong for any canon dslr's 720 mode prior to the 5d3 :)
