Would prisoners incarcerated in Colorado or Washington over marijuana charges be freed if marijuana is legalized in those two states? That's 12% of the prison inmates in both the states...

No. They wouldn't be. Reason being is that if you're in jail over pot, it's for an offence that would still be illegal when the new laws are passed. No one would be put in prison far having a couple grams on them, more likely community service or fines. The lesser offences might be reexamined, but someone in prison for growing 500 plants is not going to be set free.

Amendment 64 allowing recreational marijuana use is probably going to pass in Colorado. The only question is whether or not the federal government intervenes and strikes it down.

Right- this. It's legal to grow with a license already (state wise anyway, not sure about federally but I digress)-- if you're in jail for growing, you did so without a license, illegal then and illegal after if the law passes. And-- same with what the guy said above- if you're in jail for weed,  you did something that would still warrent jail. If you just got an MIP or something you wouldn't be in jail.

The real question would be if MIPs and stuff that would now become legal would stay on your record, and I believe the answer is yes because you were breaking the law at that time. There may be an asterisk next to it or something though.

but I bet the majority of those would be reexamined and I bet their sentences are so short anyways for only having a few grams that by the time the paperwork is done they'd be out anyways.

I feel like their sentences would stand as there was no confusion with their case. They did something illegal when they knew it was illegal.

What people fail to realize. Even if your state legalizes weed, which is a fucking pipe dream for most states, it's still illegal under federal law. The feds WILL fuck with you regardless of what your state says.


Marijuana won't be legal in America for the next 20+ years.


If ending the drug war is important to you, and you voted for one of the main candidates, lol, good job.

There's no doubt that it is a long shot even for Colorado, but when you get a lot of public opinion to shift toward supporting to legalizing it like has happened in the last couple of years, it is definitely something to hope for and look at with an optimistic view.

I feel like when our generation gets into political power, laws will relax across the board, and a much more socially tolerant and rational group of people will lead this country. This I can only hope, until then, I'm going to continue to hate on politics and all of the fuckers from the left and right alike.

Anytime people's rights are being trampled and I see people getting arrested or even locked up for using or selling a drug that is safer than alcohol, it pisses me off. I don't do it, but I respect other people's rights to do it.

I voted for Gary, because fuck everyone else, that's why.

They wouldn't since the law would go into effect after they've been charged guilty.

There's a term for it but I forgot what it is.
