Michael Clarke's Music Video & Sound Editing

For a long time I've wondered how Michael Clarke made the music video at the beginning of the Team Canada JOSS edit in 2010. It's something I'm interested in re-creating on my own. It makes me think..

did he create an audio track outside of a video editing program, then edit the clips to follow the music? Did he create it entirely inside of the video editing software and just layer the sounds? I'm sure that are more than a few 'correct' ways to do this, I suppose I'm wondering how YOU would. What do you think?

How I would have done it.

1. decided I wanted to do three best friends thing.
2. plan out beat in my head.
3. collect natural sounds I need.
4. open logic, import sounds, find other drumpads in the program, etc I need.
5. Put it together.
6.export audio track to fcp. put that together.

I would use logic because that's a program I have and am familiar with.

You could do this in fcp if you really wanted. You'd just need to be running like 16 audio channels and you'd drive yourself crazy putting down the timing if you aren't mozart musical. It would be a lot easier and to create it in logic/soundtrack, abelton, garageband, or any other music production software.

That's what I'm thinking, but I'm not much of an audio whiz.. I only know how to use garageband. Is there a way to strip the audio from a clip and open them as audio files in garageband?

He definitely just did it in his editing program, layered/faded stuff together to make it smooth. all about timing.

I don't doubt it, Clarke's got some serious skill. Just curious, how would you have done it?

definitely just in the timeline because the video clips to go with the sound are all there. if you were to edit using natural sounds in logic then import back into fcp then try and match up the clips and such, that would be a huge hassle and a huge waste of time. for that i would do it in fcp. really no different than layering the stuff in logic just without the instruments/musical side of it plus you don't have to try and re-match the video later

I think for this reason I'm going to try it without splitting the audio. It just makes one less step. Thanks for the good insight guys.

^^ and that Jordan Manley timeline screencap is crazy, I'd love to hear what that sounds like.

The audio was chosen before the visual so I'm not sure what you're saying by rematching. It was only matched on time, when the visual was connected to the audio. I don't understand what you're trying to say. You have to lay audio before visual to make it work.

oh ok. yeah you're probably right. i see what you are saying now. i re-watched the video after my comment and realized that some of those shots could be from the natural sound but aren't necessarily the cause of the sound you hear. if that makes sense. so ya i agree now, i would make the song in logic then import it into fcp. when i originally watched it like a year or so ago i didn't think the song was that involved, but seeing it again its pretty clear
