Salomon X Max 100

Just curious if anyone has a pair of these and what they think..

I've tried some on and they fit nice for my foot, just a bit unsure as to whether they perform well everywhere etc.

From the description they sound like a race boot, but they felt quite flexible/soft.

I currently have the Salomon mission RS8 from '09, just wondering how they're likely to compare

I tested the X-Max 120 for just a day, moving from my normal SPK Pros.

As a 120, I personally thought it was on the softer side, it didn't really feel like a 120 flex. All that aside, I think it was a fantastic boot! I tested it around the piste along with a few park laps, did a stellar job.

it's been an extremely successful boot in my shop. We've moved quite a lot. The new X-Max line is amazing. My bosses tried it out, all 4 are different types of skiers but they all came back and said it was one of the best boots they skiied. The 100 120 and 130 are all performance boots. Anyone from your weekend warrior to a racer could find themselves in this boot. Last is small, but what sells it, is its a performance boot that you can heat up and make it fit virtually anyone's foot. Now that guy with a high volume foot can get a boot that performs just as good as he skis. It's a custom boot in a sense. the liners in them are money too, pretty rigid liners but there comfortable. They milled out the heel pocket 5mm in the boot to pull you back and really grab your heel which is why I've had personal success selling these things. Before people were finding in salomon boots, the toe box was tight and it didn't grab you as well as other boots did. Now that they've pulled you back and actually lower into the boot as well, the toe box height isn't an issue and the boots are money. You can't go wrong with any of them. Just need to find which flex will best suit your skiing ability.

The X max 100 certainly is not a race boot. Its a mid to soft flexing all mounatin boot, with one of the best fits on the market.

The one big thing with the X maxs is getting the right size. The entire lower clog will mold to your foot so if anything buy small, then when you get them molded more room will appear.

We recommend molding every single pair, even if you dont think you need the extra width. The canting is now dealt with via molding, so it needs to be done on every pair.

these boots are the tits, i'm probably getting the 130 myself, just have one or two more new boots to try on. may have to soften it up a bit, but as it's been said it's not a really stiff boot for the flex, so who knows, but the shell, the liner, the fit, the buckles, the power strap, all of it is just stellar.

however, it should be known that no matter what salomon says, the x max and the quest max are not the exact same shell. the quest max is a few mils wider, which is a real shame because it fits me better but the single buckle up top feels like crap.

Just need to decide what flex will be best now. Tempted to go for the 120. I read something about being able to decrease the flex in the 120 and 130 if you take some bolt out or something? Or is that bs?

I think my current boots are a 90 flex.  I'd like something similar, but i get the impression the 100 in x max is a lot softer than what a 100 flex should be, hence why i'm tempted for the 120.

You can always soften a boot that is too stiff. It is harder to stiffen a boot that is too soft. So, it is always easier to start with a boot that is too stiff and have it softened exactly to your liking.

In effect the 120 shell and the 100 shell are the same. The main differnce is that the 120 already has an extra bolt through the cuff and the clog, which stiffens the shell to 120. Take the bolt out and it drops to about 100. But in the 100 if you get the bol added you can have a 120 flex or a 100. So it comes don to the liner, and race liner in the 120 is better then the pro liner in the 100, so it would still be a good idea to go for the 120. A shop may also charge you to drill the 100 bolt hole, so the price differnce is not too bad.

Thanks for all the great info again.  I went for the x max 120.  Yet to use them,  but if I do find I want to reduce the flex, can anyone give me some guidance on the adjustments on the back, i.e do you loosen them/remove top one completely, or..? I would ask at the shop, but people who have replied so far seem to know what they're talking about. thanks

If there are 2 screws, take out the top one AND the T-nut from the inside. Keep the bottom one in.

Hello,  I just bought the Salomon X max 120. I'm a beginner so I think the flex is maybe to stiff for me.

I read your advice to remove the upper screw for a lower flex. Does the flex changes then to 100?

I asked my bootfitter but he said the screws are not to change the flex.

Is he wrong?

Your boot-fitter is wrong if he thinks the screws don't affect the flex. But you don't want to pull out both of them. Start with the top screw, and you should feel about -10 flex points. If you need more than that, your boot-fitter can cut away parts of the shell throat to make the boot flex more. This is not bad for the boot in any way.

And do you think the X Max 120 without one screw is smooth enough for a semi-beginner?

If both screws are removed, then nothing is holding the metal backbone to the cuff and it will fall off during skiing. So you need to have one screw on to make sure you don't lose it. It also ensures that snow/water does not come into the boot.

120 sounds a bit on the stiff side, but X-Max 120 is a soft 120 so more like a 110/115. Flex ratings are more based on your ankle mobility, weight, and ability to flex a boot rather than pure skiing level. So while generally I would say it might be stiff, it is totally plausible that this flex is ok for you. It just depends on if you can properly flex it.

I have the 120's and for all day wear and bombing around the mountain they are great. Im a fairly big chap 6'4 a and 95kg, they are certainly no race boot though and the wider last means zero lower foot pain, I had some of the old Impact CS before and the flex on these is much better and more progressive and there is no shin bang for me with the race liner. If you want an all mountain 'race' boot have a look at the Atomic Tracker 130, which is what im going to move to next season as while my X-Pros are great they are a bit too soft and the last is just a bit too wide for me. I had them properly fitted at Ellis Brighams so I know they were sized and fitted correctly but Ive just out flexed them a bit I think with how I ski.

Thanks again! I have removed the top screw but now there's is a hole direct to he inside of the shoe. I'm afraid my feet wil be soaked now. Do you know a solution? Can i buy buttons or something like that for the hole?

You can't. Either have your local Salomon dealer order them up for you, or remove the T-Nut & screw from the boot and take them to your local hardware store and buy the same ones. The latter solution will be much faster and cheaper for you, so I would do that.
