What do you expect, noone on the dem side to change their minds in four years? Of course it isn't going to be 100%. Neither will Bush's; he's alienated a lot of economic republicans with fiscal irresponsibility (not that I'm sure Kerry will be much better) and many among his 2000 supporters do not agree with the war. So it goes both ways. Also, as you say, more people must come out to vote... and many, many more ARE. There has been a huge increase in registered voters this year, and I expect to see a significant increase in voter turnout on election day. This statistic is pretty useless.

Im taking a poly sci research analysis class this semester. Which pretty must deals soley on statistics and how people set up polls. You would be amazed at the amount of bias people introduce into these polls.

Also you have to take note that political polls are polls taken only with 'likely voters'.....And i think this year we are going to see alot of UNlikely voters....so screw the polls, i dont believe them...

the democrats went door to door in florida to get 35,000 unregistered voters to register democrat. more than 90% of them are african americans/hispanic that do not own their own homes/land etc. talk about uninformed, unqualified voters for the kerry party.

something to keep in mind is that polls are taken from 'people likely to vote'. That means basically no one in the 18-35 age bracket, no one in inner cities, and so on. They are reporting poll results mainly from aging (40-65), middle class - rich white people.

No one has taken into account what organizations like punkvoter, and puffy's Vote or Die campaign can/should do to this election.

I hate rich closed minded ignorant and arrogant people voting too but their votes count, and so should everyone's.

Yes, people should be informed about what they are voting for, but I, as a voting american would prefer to see an uninformed voter come out and vote for the first time and realize that their vote IS important and get energized about it (then whadoyathinklhappen? they'll start to learn and become more and more informed, because they'll realize the importance of voting).

The bottom line is that an uniformed vote is worse then no vote at all, and that goes either ways. Its like someone voting against Bush because they are afraid of being drafted, its just plain retarded, and people are making that point on national tv. All it is, is a ploy to get uniformed voters out, because if you are already informed then you know that this is a pretty big election and you should know that you need to vote.

the draft is just another hot topic of discussion that has popped up and has been displayed as a means of sneaky and arguably unethical politics, but that's not the point. The point is that EVERY VOTE COUNTS (well not really, but they tell people it does - ask Gore, afterall he had more votes than Bush, but who's in the office). Not all voters are informed the first time they go to the ballots. Does that mean they shouldn't go?

And furthermore, how can you generalize the 18-35 population that these voter drives and organizations target, and say that any number are un/illinformed? That's like me saying all republican's are asshole's. Of course they aren't all assholes, but some are bound to be, but so are some democrat's and some independant's. The point is that it is highly unlikely that any surge in voting will cause anything other than a minute difference in the informed to uninformed voter ratio.

well...whether your democrat or republican, it is obvious as to what is going on in FL. democrats are getting as many FREE votes as possible. they are registering people who have never voted, people who have never gone to schoool, people who have never held a job in the primary labor market, albeit some might have had secondary labor jobs, but thats not to say that there isn't displacement, which breeds another thread. i'm not racist, but i am a logical person and some people should not be allowed to exploit the uninformed in such a ostentatious way. its basically cheating and to be more blunt they are using stupid people, which in this case happen to be predominantly black.

you will find more voter apathy in the 18-35 bracket then anywhere else, so from that you can deduce that there would be more uninformed individuals in said age bracket. Old people all know whats going on, they alwas read the paper and watch TV. The baby boomers do to for the most part, this is the biggest vote of their lifetimes, yet they are not 100% informed. Also, while everyone does have a vote and a right to use it, that doesn't make it wise for them to use it without knowing what they are doing. I am not saying that they shouldn't vote, but it just as bad as not voting in the first place

I think the point is, and if you are in fact a logical person you'll see where I'm going with this, that universal suffrage is quite simply essential to a functioning democracy. If we want to say 'Uninformed people can't vote', well, where is that line going to be drawn, and why there? It's impossible to justify. Also, just as far as there are going to be uninformed voters, there are going to be people voting for the wrong reasons, or for no reason at all 9MY husband is voting republican, so I will too; or My parents raised me to vote this way, although I don't know what it entails). Whether or not they've met a certain standard of employment, or even finished high school, they deserve a voice. That's just how the country works, and it's why the country works.

they do have a voice if they choose to use it, but the democrats in this specific situation, have exploited all of them because of their socioeconomic situation. these people would not have voted had the democrats not come do their homes with a paper and pen. they are essentially free votes, that can not be argued. i'm not saying they can't vote, i'm just saying this is a very niggardly way of doing business.

I am not saying that we should take away uninformed peoples suffrage, all I am saying is that it sucks that people are trying to get people to vote and not telling them that they should learn about what they are voting for. I think it is unethical for P Diddy to get up there and say 'vote or die' and forget to tell them to think before they vote instead of going with the media default candidate.

very well put. the vote or die campaign at mtv really subverts me because of exactly what you said. people put to much faith into the media and their whores. the problem with celebrities is that they all endorse a bohemian approach to politics. they like to take the side of the staving artist, because they are just that, artists. too many uninformed, young, voters look up to celebrities more than they look up to their parents. of course the young adults are going to listen to their idols, that is common sense and for that i think mtv is making a bad move.

Oh, I'd certainly prefer everyone educate themself too. I'm with you there... and Sean Combs (fuck Puff Daddy) is a moron. But if the democrats want to register voters anywhere, I don't think it's reasonable to criticize them for doing so. Just because they're in a dilapidated area and are likely to vote democrat doesnt change anything, although you're right, they were clearly focussing on areas that would vote for them. I don't know what else you'd expect. I mean, were they going to go into the suburbs? Not nearly so many of those people even NEED to be registered. It seems to me that in going into an area wherein very few people would have registered is simply maximizing turnout. I mean, obviously given the selection, they're going to vote democrat... but does that mean it's wrong that they should register? I don't think so.

If you want to talk about problems with registration, how about the guys who were registering Dem and Rep voters, and throwing out all the democratic ones? I'd consider that MUCH worse.

and what about what happened in Florida last year with people being turned away who were registered voters, with voting histoies, or the people that were turned away because they were black (because they typically tend to vote more demcratically), or the Preacher who was told he was not allowed to vote because he was a convicted felon (even though he had never been arrested, and Florida is in violation of civil liberties by not allowing ex-felons to vote), and don't even get me going on the amount of dead people that miraculously voted.

I would rather have people out and voting (for whom ever), then to have peoples right to vote be taken away from them. Their voice, no matter how informed or not, was silenced, and that is simply not fair.

I have a sneaky suspicion that the amount of homeless people that were given cigs to vote gore was not an amount of people that you need to get all upset for. I think that there needs to be a big review of how this country votes and then revised to make it more resistant to voter fraud. I think that it is going in the opposite direction with people being able to even fax in their votes. That is just screaming for somebody to take advantage of the system.

On a different note, I think that the electoral college needs to be revised as well. Has anyone heard of one of the electors in West Virginia that is still undecided? He has threatened that if the people vote for the candidate that he does not support, he will put his vote where he personally wants it. That is screwed up to have an entire election come down to one man.
