Could Lindsey Vonn make in the men's?

So I came across an article on CBC news that Lindsey Vonn is waiting for the FIS ruling on permitting her to race against the men in the world cup without ruining her score in the women's division. I was excited to see a female athete taking on the men on racing events...even if she does not stand a chance.

This takes me back to the time when Sarah Burke was beating the men's in small half pipe and big air contests...

I know racing is not something you guys like but I was just wondering what NS feel about this. Thoughts?

It's cool that she's racing against men, but it should stay out of competition even if she won't come close to a podium finish. Once you let it one way, that sort of sets precedence to allow a man to race in a female race. Keep it to for-fun races.

its dumb, the reason men race in mens events is because.. they are men! should the best female 100m sprinter start running against the best male sprinters?

ya if she can compete.

womens sports are lower level. some freak women athletes can compete at the highest level- Mens Pro Competetion.

if she thinks she is one of the best in the world, let her compete there. if she belongs at the higher level...well then she belongs.

She would be OK and hold her own. But I think since she'd be a celebrity competing the public would expect unreasonable results which are pretty much impossible. They should let her do a couple mens races a year to get more money into the sport IMO.

Haters gonna hate and all but she brings money to the table noone else in the game does. She deserves a chance to show what she can do against men. Austria and Switzerland are the only countries where skiiers are A list celebrities and Vonn manages to be one in the USA where they are not. If anyone skiier in the world wants to talk shit about her they can ask themselves how many people who don't ski know how to ski or anything about it who they are (yet basically everyone knows Vonn even someone in say Mexico.)

Its a difficult decision for the FIS but i think she should be able to race in some races, allow her to reach her goal!

Sure she should. Women's races always have lower times and she and Mariah Riesch always seem to have a 1-2 second lead over every other female racer. Might as well give her another challenge.

men and women competitions are not separated by performance, they are separated by sex are they not? plus it would be like saying "hey girls, one day if you're good enough and prove to be the best amongst us, then you can ski with boys"

Well Unfortunately women generally tend to be built less athletically. So generally in most sports women competitors put up lower scores/times. If you have a girl who is capable of putting up a competitive time in a men's race then why not let her enter.

If she can compete then she should at least try. I think that she needs the extra motivation to keep training and to become better than he already is and to keep improving. For women to compete with men it's like men getting on an all star team. Same difference.

But it's generally accepted that women are not as fast as men, Lindsey dominated so hard last year, why shouldn't she try and push herself against the guys? Also she was training where I live in Chile with the Canadian and Norwegian men and I heard she wasn't the slowest. I don't she would do this if she didn't think she had a chance of doing ok, plus the Lake Louise course is pretty mellow, not like she is going to do the men's Hahkenhahm (sp!?).

It always comes down to one basic fact.... Women and Men are just not the same physically. We are built in totally different ways, and as a result men are just going to be more proficient in sport . It's the reason a male weight lifter will lift more then a female.

I say if she wants to compete she has to meet the standards of the male athletes.

her times are usually around 5 seconds short of the best mens times. that would put her pretty damn far back. so no, no chance she could compete with the men.

As soon as you have women racing in the men's competition, the divisions are no longer by gender - they're by ability. This seems unfair to the women competing in the women's races, as it essentially makes them the lower tier ("if they were any good, they'd be racing the men").

Should a man be allowed to race with the women if his times aren't good enough for the men's competition? Obviously not.

IMO men's and women's racing should be kept separate and equal, rather than as a top-tier men's division and a lower tier "women who aren't good enough to race the men" division.

Well, the FIS decision is in:

NO, she will not be able to run against the men in this year's world cup. It was a long shot anyway. But I give her props for trying with confidence.

If she wants to race with the men let her, as long as they don't change the course, and don't give her any special treatment (ie picking her start number), and special skis or something.

should men be able to compete with women? should the men who can't get into the mens finals get into the womens? I don't agree with cross gendering single gendered sports, but I would agree with coed, or trying to make the money incentive equal among sports when the best can compete in either gender category.

nah, the lower levels should be divided by gender, but the pinnacle of the sport should be open to the best of the best regardless of physical characteristics.

just so happens that women arent good enough in the vast majority of sports to be able to compete at the highest level. when they can(golf comes to mind), they are usually allowed to compete.

The reason for her bid to run against the men is to test run the Lake Louise DH course before the women's turn. In that event the men will race the course something like 3 weeks before the women, so she is trying to get the upper hand. But I could be wrong
