Thanks to us competitive skiers fis is now taking over our sport. Now the Aspen Open and two of the NFPPO's are sanctioned by the fis, which does not benefit the average park competitor out in the least. In order to compete in these cons you must have an active FIS membership($100), an active ussa
USSA membership($165). So we welcomed these guys in and now they are screwing us over. I knew this would happen and if we don't stop it now, all comps are goin to be like this.
also you have to be of a certain age to be allowed to register for those level of events now. holding back progression of younger athletes, good work fis.
yeah a lot of comps in ontario are run by FSO (freestyle skiing ontario) which is a good organization but you gotta pay to register and compete and shit, idk the details but it seems lame. progress, man!
As if skiing wasn't expensive enough as it is. The only thing it's going to do is hold back young athletes trying to get their foot in the door. And those who can't afford that are screwed
Ughhhhhhhhhh hate this so much. Why can't they look at the biggest comps of the year and just choose from that (dew tour, x games, maybe some NZ events)
Realistically, the only ways comps will be able to draw the biggest athletes in skiing is by joining FIS and therefore offering the prospect of building points toward Olympic qualification, or by offering a serious prize purse.
I'm sure we'll start to see more and more of the little comps going to FIS as the Olympics get closer, but it sort of negates the idea that these 2 particular comps are "open" competitions.
I don't compete really at all so I don't know much about FIS or anything (other than "FIS sucks"), nor do I really care. Still though, I doubt that anyone who has made it far enough in the comp scene to qualify for big events like these will be turned away by the prospect of paying a couple hundred bucks for a few more memberships. Is this just for big events like Dew Tour, X, and stuff like that?
I think that's his point... it's discouraging people who may have a legitimate shot, and kind of negating the concept of an "open" event. Look at dudes like Dale or Wyble. They've won, or placed well at NFPPO, Aspen Open, Mount Snow Open, Dumont Cup but it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't have FIS membership/USSA membership. Basically I think it's kinda ruining the 'open' events, where the point is to take your shot against others in a format that gives everyone a fair chance regardless of sponsors, invitations, memberships etc.
It applies to some of the big opens, too, which I think is asinine.
Some young gun from who the fuck knows where has to drop a couple hundred on an open registration, transportation, accommodation, AND let's throw some more red tape and add a couple membership fees. Welcome to racing, but wait... nope, too late.
Ah, yeah okay that does suck. If it only applied to big comps where its pretty much just big (ish) names and/or guys who are on a comp circuit all season then okay, but who wants to pay a couple hundo for one event?
And yet, more and more companies are focusing on teams of skiers that have a better online / vid presence than comp results. Skiing is getting bigger and bigger, in respect to comp skiing and videos. I don't think comps are taking over.
Agreed. Those dudes definitely have 0 olympic aspirations.
Part of the reason for those events becoming FIS I think is because they have gained a lot of legitimacy the last few years from the riders who participate and win them. Thats why FIS wants a piece of that pie. Remember their goal is to bring the best competitors to the olympics. If the best competitors are choosing to compete in events like Aspen Open and NFPPO maybe we should be addressing that with guys like Gus who do not need to be showing up at Aspen Open and dominating an other wise even field.
I think we can all agree thats not cool to do. Even if you want to OD on AFP points.
this. I was planning on doing the waterville stop of the NFPPO this year, but it looks like that's reserved for those with connections/fat wallets. Can't we simply compete in open competitions because it's fun? I've got no business holding olympic aspirations. However I'd still like to compete at a more-than-local-hill level in competitions with decent purses and great organization, but just don't have extra cash to drop to on FIS/USSA memberships for one or two competitions. I feel like there's gotta be more people in my shoes out there.
