New newschoolers sucks

i know this sounds like i am sum 12 year old keyboard warier but seriously i don't like this change of newschoolers i know they think its for the better but it worked before why change it. so i am wondering what the rest of you think should we try and contact newschoolers about this or should i just get use to it.

Given that I came in here specifically to downvote you, you might want to just get used to it. ;-)

Really, this change is for the better and will serve the skiing community for years to come. Newschoolers is laying the groundwork for a much more media-focused service, which makes sense, given that Newschoolers has become a much more media-focused service.

This is just one step in the progression of NS becoming more and more social.

It does suck, the homepage is just a cluster of shit i dont wanna see... if i want to see all the current pics & vids i will click on pics or vids...

 the old NS was much better

The difference now is that there's tons of videos on the homepage as opposed to just Video of the Day, and there will be a NSTV module that will appear on the homepage when we launch big episodes of certain series.

Well, we actually had a VOD module during the testing phase. Issue was that it was always the exact same video that was pinned to the top by user voting. So VOD channel being forced to the top became irrelevant.

You'll start to notice too that the splash page will be one of the pictures that has made it to the top, unless that picture is too tiny to be selected for splash page.

since you reds are in this thread

i dont come on ns for media content since years ago but it looks you guys went the reddit route with it?good idea i think. any way we can have this transfer to the forums? be able to upvote and downvote threads AND posts based on RELEVANCE then be able to sort by hot/top/controversial/new. would be nice for those of us who to have hours to quickly be able to skip all the bs. also be able to return to a neutral vote, seems if i click an up or down arrow i cant reset it to zero

Once we have the voting ecosystem a bit more smoothed out, this kind of a thing is definitely a possibility. You can get a quick version of it if you save your homepage filters to be forums only, and then sort by latest / top / hot.

The entire reason we went in this direction is the sheer quantity of stuff on NS has become impossible to keep up with. We needed a way to get the best stuff forward.

Any site re-design takes some getting used to.

Hell, anyone here remember the drama when facebook first launched the news feed? It was like the apocalypse... Everyone said that they were going to burn facebook to the ground. There was mass-scale protests on the internet... utter chaos.

Now... imagine facebook if it was only profiles with zero news feed?

I also really dislike the new layout. Like others have said it is a cluster of garbage that makes the interesting, "big" things that people want to see hard to find. Let's face it, there is a lot of shit on here that no one wants to see and with the old site you never had too. Now its all front page status. And I thought I disliked the new freeskier layout. This shit is plain awful!

Hmmmm... yet everything on there is chosen by the users of Newschoolers. We don't put up anything anymore, only you do.

what i liked is that the main things i wanted to see videos and news which were easy to find on the front page in that big box with a nice picture and latest news with videos on the side. if i wanted to see other things i would go on gear talk, forums and that i just don't get why people like this am i to simple or what?
so i want to know what benefits i get out of the new NS

Well first off, why don't you set your filters to news / videos only, and save that view? That way, you will only see videos and news.

The second benefit is that this is much more of a curated view as 'by the people'.

The #1 complaint that I hear about media is "Magazine X and Website Y suck because its always about the same people." Now, there are no more editors telling you what their buddies are up to - its impossible for us, even if we weren't the worst culprits of the 'old boys club'. Its almost impossible as a media in the industry to not get involved in that, because you're so close with all these rad guys.

Now, your homepage is filled only with what your fellow NSers have democratically voted to the top. If you don't agree, voice your opinion with a downvote.

So not only does the new layout allow for items to float up and down as the day goes on, it allows exposure to those who the users of this site want to hear about.

That is the advantage... which if you ask me is a pretty big one. There's lots of other places where you can view standard news setups about pro skiers. We don't even do a better job of covering it than they do.

the one thing bothering me most about the new layout is a pretty minor detail but this plain gray background is throwing me off.

with the new homepage layout and all the empty space between the boxes (sorry for my pathetic internet lingo), having no background makes the site look really plain.

i liked the nimbus background from back when the en route shit came out. i dont even remember when that was

JP actually initially had a much lighter background for just this reason. It worked way better on the homepage, but for the rest of the site it was super noticable. When we showed people the change, all they argued about was the background... so we changed it back to be more in-line with the old BG.

Its pretty cool when there's a skin on the site actually.

Personally, I don't like it either, but that's only because it's a change. A few days or weeks from now, I'll be thinking the old one sucked.

Keep using it. Feel how it lives and breathes the popular stuff in the sport. Check it 2-3 times a day and scroll down to see where things are.

Give lots, and lots and lots of ratings.

What I meant was I lied it when it was you and the editors who put up the big news and your articles which interested everyone, on the main page and then to watch videos or other things you dove in further to the site to find what YOU want. There are so many different trends and styles within our sport, that whats "hot" might not be at all what you want to see.

I also dislike that there is an add now before EVERY video.

But why should an editor tell the community what is cool? Why is their perspective so much better than the voice of the people?

There's always lots of ads in front of videos during winter. As things grow it should level out.
