the film industry just turned dumb...

I like how I can purchase a RED ONE for 1200 more than I bought my a99 for..... i mean it doesn't end there, but still.

All depends on what you do. That's the beauty of the camera market, there isn't one manufacturer or one style of camera that everyone has to conform to, you can pick the tool you need for you job that will do what you want it to do. And there's pretty much a camera for every situation

The Film Industry did not turn dumb.

Because of RED's manufacturing facility's and income, they've been able to produce and test their products at a faster rate. Therefore, ease in making more, means that they can reduce the price for consumers.

Secondly, You may be able to Purchase a RED ONE for 1200 more than your A99. But for a working RED ONE Package, you're looking at at least $9,750.

Dumb as in gear just got cheap. I would easily sell my fs100 for a Red One set up. Just me personally though. I'm all about trying new cameras as long as I don't lose any money in the resale. I'm just in awe at the industry. Moves so quickly anymore!

Eh I won't be doing that. I'll make way more money with 2 a99's to be honest than anything. I'm finding that it's about what's profitable then what is fun to shoot with...

I'd replace profitable with "Practical". The R1 isn't something you take to the park.

Don't buy a R1 unless you can deal with its size.  Epic and Scarlet are still a hefty little package when kitted out.  I haven't been this happy in awhile.  It's a good day for everyone in the camera world :)

Keep in mind thats just the body... still gotta buy batteries, memory, screen, lenses, more accessories, and then a computer/harddrive to hold your beefy files... It doesn't even come with a lens mount (except for the red one I believe?).

Still would rather have an fs700 (I'd put my money on the fs100/700 being the reason for the price drop too). Hopefully some people will see the reasonability of my argument when I say I'd prefer other cameras over reds. I thought that out of this year's ski movies, the ones shot with reds were the least appealing. Call me crazy, but I'd take a gh3 or hvx over an R1 pretty much any day.

This. everyone is so stoked to shoot with reds and skiing, but a red is made for shooting for film, in controlled settings. I dunno, I found a camera (fs100) that creates and image I like and does what I need, don't see what else I would need? maybe some new lenses but thats lenses, completely different haha

I guess RAW files are cool, but i would need a new computer and hundreds of dollars of hard drives. Not to mention RED bones you on everything such as memory, the screen, and even batteries. I never planned on getting one of these, this is just my input.

I am sure the fs700 had a little something to do with it, but I would say there was a reason this massive price drop coincides with Sony's release of the F5 and F55.

I think Birger or optitek made one. Although I think most used Nikons on r1's for DSLR lenses. And I do own a Scarlet.

Yesterday I wasn't. After looking at finances I likely will. I've extended this before if anyone ever wants to check out a RED feel free to contact me if your in CO or if I'm around. I'll be in Ut, ID, Washington, Mt, Ak and possibly Pennsylvania in May.

Also anyone looking at a r1 that's a beautiful sensor and you can get away with a somewhat modest editing system. Mine is extremely basic andi work with an epic frequently. Cost wise consider lens support, better tripods, and so on....

Ah, i was going to ask how you would transport your RED around the BC. I know Brainfarm will devote an entire F:Stop bag to a telephoto, us a couple more for the body and accessories. In my experience unless you have a sled or heli, the GH2 is pretty much your only option for moiré-free BC footage.

I have a dakine mission bag for the body...at least I think... And usually a zoom lens or two. Then another matching bag with my primes kit and larger zooms. It's a big kit but I can get what I need for a day in one bag if I pack tight. Power is the hardest. 3-4 bricks in the bc weighs a lot. Not to mention the size. If its skiing it'll involve a plane or heli.

Yikes. I can't imagine lapping the summit on skins with all that. If you've got air cargo, might as well being a charcoal grill like Brainfarm too.

Not really. They're making new ASIC boards to handle the sensor specs. Not in shop til December. It's looking like the Scarlet may not be able to handle it. Testing will be in December and on....

Not true. Epic will be epic mx and epic dragon. They don't even know if the scarlet can handle dragon. If it can it'll be scarlet x and scarlet dragon. If not they'll allow scarlet users to get some kind of upgrade path to dragon. That is not known yet.

I dont understand why you think a RED cant be used in the BC? I have carried and used an Epic while filming with Sweetgrass on some pretty long tours last year. They used them all season, even two on some shoots and they get into some deep spots. You Just have to be able to haul a pretty damn heavy pack but it is very do-able.

I agree it's not that bad. But I've carried 90lbs of gear in the army for 20 straight miles in a day in 115 temps in the army. So I try not to call people on it. My perspective of hiking and weight is different than others. Maybe it's just the setup time and maneuverability.
