Also, aren't the more active ones in Hokkaido tucked off to the NE? And most of the accessible skiing around Sapporo?
I've hiked a bit in Volcanoes National Park, on the Kilauea Caldera, and you checked with the park rangers about activity, got a few tips about safety, but it didn't feel too dangerous. Also did a trip to Iceland last May, and from what I've seen of Japan in clips, the volcanic activity reminds me of Krafla - you can tell that there's a ton of geothermal activity, bubbling mud pots and steaming vents, but nothing like a hollywood blockbuster.
since its so cold if the snow isnt super new it ices over rediculously fast and since the peaks are so steap, you are skiing icy steeps.....it gets so sketchy at times. just check your weather and plan to go at a good time of year.
