Hi, a friend of mine is writing up a history of freeskiing which will be incorporated in handbooks of our skifederation, so my question to you, NS, what do you think really has to be mentioned ?

I got a better idea... Lets actually give some insight as to WHY we feel these people matter, vs. just giving names.

Geoff Stump was a bad-ass hot dog skier. Competed all over the place, starred in many of the Stump films movies, and was pivotal in helping create them.

From website:

"Geoffrey W Stump started making ski films with his brother Greg in 1984 when Warren Miller’s formulaic ski movies were unchallenged in the fall theaters. Geoff was in the midst of a competitive freestyle skiing career that saw him amass U.S. National and Nor-Am titles and named to the U.S. Freestyle Ski team six times. He and his brother took some video gear and a few old 16mm cameras and produced the films that would change the look of action sports media forever. The Stump brothers introduced audiences to satirical comedy, extreme skiing, cutting edge free skiing and ski bum reality in movies like The Blizzard of Ahhs, Maltese Flamingo, The Good the Rad and the Gnarly and several others."

i'd say that the dumont vs tanner pipe rivalry should be included somewhere because it brought freeskiing into the mainstream much more than it had in the past. albeit a little later.

this won;t be the first time I've said it, but there should be a newschool wiki. there is a wealth of information on this sport that really has not been documented properly. having an open source project where the minds of hundreds can contribute would be golden. writing pamphlets is great, but there is so so so much more than can fit into a hundred of them. think, in 20 years pioneers of this sport will be in their 50s/60s and won't remember half the shit they did.

I challenge NS to have a wiki section of the site.

robb and scott gaffney for their work in tahoe and abroad - in saying this, im referring mostly to scott and his film work for the past twenty years, freelancing and with MSP - because let's face it, it was probably a film that all changed our way of thinking, and broke down the barriers of what was possible.

from the msp website:

" He got in over 200 days in the 92’93 season and worked on another video, The Edge of Existence. He slept in his car in Crested Butte while at the International Ski Film Festival where the video took second in the ‘Adventure’ category. With a $2,000 budget, he had bettered Warren Miller.

Since then, he has stuck with MSP as cinematographer/co-creative director throughout the Ski Movie trilogy and for Focused, Yearbook, Hit List and Push."

Also, thanks for the props Bishop.  I will say that Dudes like me are partially responsible for the demise of the sport too.  I may have been the first "old school" freestyle coach to actually start working with "new school" techniques and athletes.  I took classic freestyle spinning and flipping mechanics and taught young athletes how to land on their feet.  My reasoning was that I couldn't stand watching all these awesome young skiers land on their heads while learning something new.  But, the appearance of coaches signals the beginning of the end of the "free" in the skiing. Next comes judges, criteria, organization, committees, Olympics and other bullshit.  SEE the IS It ALL GOING TO TRIPLES post.

Ummmm how hasnt Jason Levinthals (og owner of line) name been mentioned yet?....all these pro skiers named above wouldnt have known what a twin tip ski was if Jason didnt invent it...This project has been done a million times already...If you do some reasearch on Jason you will find out that his first pair of twin tip skis were pressed and made before salomons much better known 1080...every one credits salomon and the 1080 for bieng the first twin tip...this isnt the case...Jasons first twin tip was on the cover of freeze magazine, pretty sure it was before salomon even start pressing the 1080...Line has pretty much done your project for you...here is your project http://lineskis.com/our-story cheers.

2 Things:

-How skis have evolved and literally exploded in the past 5 years (in terms of number of designs and overall progression). You could do a tie in of Shane McConkey's ideas and how they have shaped the skis that most everybody has on their feet these days.

-The movement of backcountry and sidecountry skiing and how that has shaped the new gear being released on a yearly basis now. How is the 'average' freeskier's collection of ski stuff different than it was 10, 5 or even 3 years ago?

CR and the tahoe crew behind Boards in Motion. Rod Adams, Clint Fiala. Shane Anderson. Kent Kreitler. Just one small part of the story. CR having a few shots (his 1260) in that snowboard movie at the time (Decade?) was pretty epic. Chapter 3 by CP. Donner train gap. I wish more ski movies included Tahoe backcountry today. Too tired to expand, but worth putting those bits out there.

I've been thinking about this one event for awhile:

The K2 Back Nine, when it happened was really the the start of me getting into freestyle skiing. I think it was super influential as it was one of the first competitions that was bringing park riding into thee backcountry. Spins, pillow lines and cliff drops were combined for a score that was voted on by the riders of the comp themselves. I bet that without the K2 back nine we wouldn't have had the red bull cold rush.

Well these are ok, but kind of late in the game if you're talking about the overall freeskier picture of ski decents in no-fall zones, and the influence of film and media on the industry itself.  I would probably change this if I had more time to think but this would have to be my big list as of now.

I feel like the ski mountaineering part got huge, then the ski game sort of grew into that over time.  Descents got deadly, minds expanded, frontiers got pushed out.  Alaska in my mind was the turning point in when shit got just oh so real, and the media influences and money really came in, even though guys like Miller and Barrymore had been making films for decades.  Helis started flying everywhere.  Freestyle exploded.  Technology hits skis.    Snowboarding follows.  Spancerships.  The interwebz.  Backcountry explodes.  Tanner scream.  The End.

The big backcountry wave in Chaminox in the 70s/80s. Really tested peoples skills at the time. Jonny Mosleys dinner roll was (i think) the first trick that incorporated a z-axis into the rotation in a competition.

Sorry to bring this old thread up but I think my question isn't worth a new thread.

I am also doing a work on freeskiing for university and I am searching for sales volumes from twintips over the last years (best would be the last years). Doesn't matter if it its the whole twintip market or only from one company but i can't find any valid sources for this. Only thing I found was something like "the sales volumes increased a lot the last years" but that doesn't help me a lot. I need some valid sources, maybe someone knows about this and can help me out.

sounds a little out of place but you gotta give acknowledgment to snowboarding and ultimately skateboarding int the formation of what we call "modern freeskiing". the entire countercultural mentality of boardsports and action sports in general owes massive respect to skateboarding its art, figures, music, and style of film production.

Not. I went to the Ravinos St.Patty's day jump on many occasions. They may have done it drunker and more baked than anyone else, but nothing they did was innovative. Definitely the first time I have every seen a guy black out in the middle of a back flip and land like an omelet.


Also think that the Salomon 1080 was way more influential on freeskiing than the Olin Mark IV. The only people who were skiing switch on Mark IV's were ballet skiers. It's like the tool was there but nobody knew what to do with it.

In the 70's they used to put these self contained mini movie theaters in ski shops. It was like an oldschool big screen TV and the movies were on these massive tapes that you pushed in like an old eight track tape. The footage was of a bunch of the early freestyle events. Guys were doing doubles and triple backs back then. They were usually put out by different ski manufacturers. I remember one that Fischer did that was pretty cool. It was about a guy who was basically bumming around to different events, and trying to make enough money to keep going. He competed in freestyle aerial comps, moguls and pro racing. Pro racing was head to head racing and there were jumps in between the gates. They weren't kickers, but you definitely had to have you shit together or you would get launched out of the course. There were tons of guys who competed in racing and freestyle. I'm sure somebody has an archive of those old movies, it would probably be tough to get them on to a modern format. You guys would crap yourselves if you got a chance to see what guys were doing back then.
