I want to start waxing my own skis screw pay 25 bucks at local shops i know i need an iron and wax and a scraper please tell me how to wax em or any thing else i need.

+k for tips and tricks on it

Depending on your budget you need supplies such as
An iron
Wax
Scraper
Brush

I have a $10 normal iron and it works just fine even though some people act like you are sending your bases to hell if you use one.
Get the wax appropriate to the temperature you will be skiing at
A strong scraper helps a lot I have a shitty plastic one that the wax sticks to and it gets really annoying.

Turn the iron on to like 150 degrees(double check that) and melt the wax over the ski in a zig zag form up and down so you can spread the dots out enough to spread everywhere. After you are done with that move the iron up and down the ski until it is evenly spread out. Let your skis sit for as long as you can then scrape ALL of the wax off that you can. After that take the brush and get the grooves going up and down and you should be good!

Also to hold the brakes down get a strong rubber band and wrap it the edges so they come up and stay up. You can get the rubber bands off of broccoli from the grocery store.

watch youtube videos. make sure youre scraper is sharp. dont put the iron on too hot. I got my iron for 5 bucks at value village

like everyone's been saying, dont let iron get too hot. if wax starts smoking, iron is too hot. dont let iron sit in one place on the ski, ever. it should always be moving. when you scrape/brush make sure you go from tip to tail, or at least stay consistent in the direction you choose, i.e. don't scrape tip to tail and then brush tail to tip. and dont worry about getting every last bit of wax off the ski, it'll come off anyways as soon as you start skiing. better to leave too much on than too little

get all the wax off the skis when you are done. Scrape til you can scrape no more haha. Its not about the wax on top rather than the wax that has penetrated your base.

like said above, watch a few videos first. If you have an old pair of skis, do a practise run on those. It's really not that hard. adjust the iron just above the point where it easily melts the wax and just dont hold the iron in one spot, always keep it moving and you will be fine.

just use wrist rubber bands bracelets and join two together, they are strong and most people have some lying around their house.

Go to your local ski shop, buy your wax stuff from them, and then ask if they can give you a little tutorial on how to wax. If you know your shop a little bit and its a small place, they will probably be happy to help you out. My shop was anyway.

try checking out 4frnt tech talk on NSTV..they had a episode dealing with this a few years back and its how i learned to do it. i have no idea if its still there but its worth looking

I was looking on EVO and they had kit the brand was one ball jay with all the shit in it for 75 bucks anyone thinks its worth getting?

My local shop charges me like 7 bucks to hand wax. Usually I just buy them some beer tho and theyll wax up 2 pairs. Find a better shop.

I would lose more money by spending the hour waxing both pairs.

150 degrees is way too hot for normal wax unless you're waxing for snow that is below -10, general wax doesn't need a temperature greater than 120.

buy iron at a reuse it

buy some mid temp wax

buy a scraper

buy some of those green scrubbies you probably clean dishes with

make sure your skis are at room temperature and the bases are clean

plug in the iron and let it heat up

melt the wax onto your skis and spread it around and just cover up bases. dont let the iron sit on one place to long or you will fuck up your bases.

let them sit for a bit and then scrape them off

finish it off the the green scrubbie and just run it up and down your skis and just smooth every thing out

this is all you really need to do because you are probably just waxing park or pow skis so this should be fine. if your racing or competing in big comps then there is lots more to do.

This is the best tip in this thread. You have to be real careful with your iorn temp. To hot and the heat will seal the pores of the base. Good wax will come with a specific melting temp. But careful, as most of the time the temp is written in celcius. Also, temp on waxing irons is almost ALWAYS in celcius, as an real easy to over heat.

The rule of thumb is to get the iron JUST hot enough to melt the wax.
If the wax smokes on the iron, you are way to hot. Crank that sucker down.

My tip, buy a used iron from goodwill. I got an iron for 4 bucks, scraper for 10, wax for 10. Still use the same stuff (minus the wax) 2 years later. Love it!

make sure your extra careful doing your base edge to. you only have to do it about once a season, but its very easy to screw up and do some bad damage to your skis.
I dont know if someone else has mentioned this, but were work gloves when doing any work on your edges, ive sliced my hand up pretty good if i my hand slips.

Go slow, and take your time.

you definitely gotta let that shit soak over night.

I like the points being made on iron temp in this one. If the iron is smoking thats a good sign that the iron is too hot. Turn it down!

I actually was going to give this as a tip. I've been using two of those silicone wrist bands for four years now. Less prone to breaking than rubber bands too.

word. my shop got a bunch of these rubber bracelet things from cotton market when they closed in the plaza our shop is in.

For waxing, id look into the dakine kit. We only charge like $10 to wax. Remember to put your skis away for the summer WITH wax on them.

Another tip, get a job at a ski shop, free tunes are worth it along with in industry perks.

how about rails? ive got a few teflon rails but hey are getting pretty roughed up, ive been told to just use candle wax and rub that over them any other tips?
