Scary encounters with thieves, robbers

this is just a close encounter kinda thing
My house right now just about got robbed, this guy parked his car, came out and had a bright yellow jcket and toolbelt first he rang the doorbell and i didnt answer, 5 minutes later i was walking up the stairs and i look out the window and see him walking around my house so obviously i locked the doors, and took his plates.
I came outside with a huge knfie and he ran back to his car and drove away
do you guys have any scary encounters with thieves or robbers?
any close encounters?

Tell me an easier way to check if anyone is home. If the someone answers, they just say they are looking for a different address, or something similar.

Did the van he was driving happen to have a company name on it? Maybe some kind of electrical company that works on houses... maybe a cable company... AC company. IDK Maybe he was just trying to do his fucking job.

nah, was rusted at the bottom, black windows, and a drk navy-blueish color
hand i meant like, he rang the doorbell with the jacket on, the ran back to his car put on a black hoodie and came back

hmmm easier, if i was going to rob a house i would watch the house for at least a few days figuring out the typical schedule of the inhabitants. i'm not going to ring the doorbell as a feeler thats for sure.
