in my mind... a lot of different factors. the basic ones I see around me (not entirelly true everywhere, but around me at least). people from the south and the more religious people are conservatives, while notherners and non-religious people are liberal.

I think the political spectrum is not liniar, but circular, extending left and right from the bottom of the ring, becoming increasingly radical in either direction till you meet at the top.

Comunist Leftists have a lot in comon with Fundamentalist regligious right winggers, Mainly that both go to long ends to supress their societies so they can impose their ideologies. Propaganda, bombing, terrorism, torutre etc etc. Anyone that speaks out against the government is labled a 'radical' gets charactor assaniation, their 'patriotism' is questioned or they are labed 'anti-insert-natinon-here' (hummm... sounds like what happends to anyone that questions the bush administration) In really radical countries these people just get killed.

safty lies in the moderates. Anyone who holds extrodinary beliefs on either side of of the specturm is or has potential to become dangerous.

Or, a fetus in a mothers woom who was either raped, or ill prepared to give the child a life it deserves on this planet, there by giving it to science for stem sell research to in the end, save the lives of millions of people all over the entire world.

wether or not abortion is banned in this country, its still going to happen. Might as well keep it from becoming a black market trade, because it if its banned thats whats going to happen, and we might as well put the fetuses to good use.

If I was an unborn fetus about to be aborted, I'd love to go twoards saving the lives of millions of people, rather than just be aborted, put in a zip lock bag and discarded.

That is if I actualy knew what the fuck was going on when I was an unborn fetus.. so whatever.

Actually, I personally think (and not without support) that my values are far more moral than those typically identified as 'conservative', and I'm usually identified as a liberal. Well, on here, at least.

people really need to stop using the 'what about the girls who were raped arguement' That accounts for probably .05% of abortions. I've known quite a few bitches who got abortions because they became pregnant after 'forgetting to take the pill'. Or 'it feels better without a condom'. Also this ill-prepared to take care of a child thing is very hypothetical. My parents were so broke when they had me and my sister that their apartment got broken into in Boston one day and the theives felt sorry for them and left. All they had were two pans and a matress in the corner plus some food. the only reason they knew the apartment got broken into was the door was kicked in.

yeah but abortion is basically an unarguable thing, because it is such a religion based subject and arguing against someone's religion is anti-freedom. So if someone has a religion that has an open stance on abortion or if they have no religion at all they shouldn't be imposed with the religion of the masses.

I personally don't like the idea of abortion unless it's due to rape or medical reasons. but I'm liberal. so that can't be the only issue, and doesn't really explain all of the friction between the two sides.

I hate how the pro-life, pro choice argument always comes down to the rape question too. However, if someone has an unwanted pregnancy becuase they are unable to support a child or give them a good life it is my opinion that they shouldn't be required by law to give birth to the poor kid.
while we're stereotyping liberals and cnservatives i would like to add that clearly all conservatives are inbred hicks while all liberals are dirty hippies.

If a girl gets knocked up and doesn't want the kid, thats between her and her doctor, not our governmnent. The fetus ain't in there reading hemingway, it doesn't know whats going on, its not in there screaming 'oooh nooo here comes the abortion doctor!' As I said before, banning abortion isn't the solution. Abortions will continue regarless in a black market fashion, might as well put the fetus to use to better human existance for everyone.

My favourite argument is, 'Abortion is murder, so we should go get out 12-gauges and kill the abortion doctors.' I like that one. In fact, the Republican senatorial candidate in OK is a big supporter of it.

I wasn't talking about Keyes. He's just a nutjob... totally off his rocker. But Alan Keyes is Illinois, and he's a tree-hugger compared to some of the southern Rep candidates. It gets pretty scary. Hell, the DEMOCRATS down there are further right than Bush.

^No kidding. I just find it mildly humorous that a senatorial candidate would have murder as part of his platform... and even funnier that he's a downright lock to win the race. The dem is basically a pro-gun, anti-abortion, fundamentalist Christian, and he doesn't stand a chance. Just not conservative enough, I guess.

it happened before they were legal, and it killed a lot of women. THAT is one HUGE reason it should be legal, because as jibtech has said, it will continue regardless. why not save MORE lives by keeping it legal?

I didn't read all of this thread so i don't know if this has been said but...
In my honest opinion i think that sometime in our generation of people there will be a radical change in political parties. I think moderate conservatives and moderate liberals are very much alike and that most people are being sort of irritated with being assosciated with the radical liberals and republicans (liberals wanting to help the people, Republicans supporting big business etc.)
More and more each election year we see poor candidates on both sides of the curve due to the corruptness of the political parties.... why did kerry get picked over dean... kerry was backed more by the political party dean was a small vermont governor.... would dean have been a better candidate then kerry.. yes... Sorry about how long this is, its sorta confusing, ic ouldnt figure out what i wanted to say

as for me, my political persuasion is mostly economicly based, and some of the social issues. i mostly dont like radical judges doing things like chucking 10 commandments monuments when theres more important things they could be doing. that kind of stuff is a big reason why im republican as well.
