Building a macbook

Sorry to make 2 threads but I am also gonna build a new macbook. I will be running FCP, possibly some after affects and a lot of other stuff. I know I need a lot of ram but what else is good? I would like to keep it under 2,500

some specific question.
what does this mean: -Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz

so basically what I am asking is when I go to build a 15 inch pro 2.3 GHz (whatever that means?)with retina display what should a upgrade and what doesn't matter.

the 13" rMBP comes out soon, might be worth waiting for. Haven't checked the processor specs but will be a decent price (compared to the 15") with a retina screen, 2x thunderbolt, USB3, hdmi

I'm in the same boat. My 5 year old MBP is dying a slow death. It's a 2.16 intel core 2 duo, 2 gigs of ram, 128 gig internal. I'm doing photo so I'm processing giant photoshop files on a regular basis, scanning huge neg files, and constantly running multiple applications. I'd love the 15in MPbR, but $2500 (base model) is a lot to drop on a laptop.

I might be able to take my dads old MBP, it's only like 1&1/2 years old, decent processor, 4 gigs of ram but I can upgrade to 8, and I think a 256 gig internal. Not to mention the later is free, my dad can use his new one as a tax write-off/his business might pay for it anyways... He wants to upgrade to the new 13in air dropping soon, want's a lighter comp and doesn't need the power.

Yes, but I dont believe it has a discrete graphics card. Something that comes in very handy whilst editing video.

Well when editing do all programs have GPU acceleration? I know premiere pro has CUDA acceleration (nvidia) but what about fcp and ae? Gaming also runs totally on the gpu, but now that I think about it the processor/cpu should matter more than the gpu for editing, right?

Pay $100 extra to get the 2.6 processor in the base model rMPB.

Pay $200 to get 16 gigs or ram.


That will cost $2500 and be a beast. Do you happen to be a college student? If so you can get $200 off.

It's $200 bucks extra for 16gb of ram? lol. Why did they decide now to solder the memory on and not allow you to put in your own ram? stupid apple.

because they made it way thinner. $200 isnt that bad really 100-150 would be more reasonable

Well considering you can now get 32Gb of ram for $140 for a desktop Pc, even $50 for an extra 8Gb is bad.

cheapest you can get 16gb for a mbp is 80. considering they solder it onto the motherboard and charge you a mark up, $200 isnt as bad as it sounds, youre already spending 2300 why not 2500? but for real, like 3 years ago to get 4gb of ram was like $300 on a mbp and to do it yourself was like $200
