Film Companies V Company Films

I checked out a showing of the new Burton flick last night. It was cool, might have been the only skier there, but that hardly made a different or came up. Whatever. Anyways, I was thinking. Snowboarding, skateboarding companies produce films involving the members of that companies "team". Burton, Chocolate, Element, Forum ect.

However, most ski videos are produced by film companies: Lvl1, Matchstick, PBP, 4bi9, Stept ect. Obviously some ski manufacturing companies make films, (4frnt, ect), but they just arnt on the level of the film companies.

Can anyone tell me why this is? Or lemme know what you would prefer. I think film companies are a bit cooler, way more athletes, usually a larger amount of talent, more money is put into the film, more focus is on the film. Lemme know what you think.

snowboarding still does have plenty of "film" companies; vg, people, think thank, absinthe, brainfarm, etc. but yeah i think that seeing some team movies in addition to the film companies would be sweet. the awesome thing about DANG! was that since it was free, it had a fucking baller soundtrack. plus free movies are always fun to watch, because they're free.

I think the 'company film' will become more common as the divide between film and comp 'freeskiers' grows. There will end up being brands who support comp skiers and advertise their products that way, targetting the market that wants to become comp skiers. Other companies will market exclusively to the guys who want to ski like the videos/edits they see. The brands that market through video will end up making their own movies. We are already starting to see that through Line TC and K2 Summer School etc (admittedly edits not movies but a similar principle).

To be honest, I prefer having own film companies over companies producing movies. I feel like there is more variety in the flicks since film companies don't necessarily pursue a certain style to sell there product... They simply don't have to promote a narrowed down image like clothing companies often do.

i know that some product companies make ski movies. But when has there ever been a movie made by a product company that has had more hype than a film companies movie? Lvl1, PBP, Stept are all huge movies.

I dont know a whole lot about snowboarding, but is the Burton flick, and the Forum flick, the big ticket movie every year? Or are the film company movies more popular?

Just interesting to see, i dunno. They also played this E-gal Eye movie, which was similar to a Stept joint, all urban and BC. It was pretty raw, def suggest looking into it if you are at all interested in a snowboard movie.
