I've been hoping Nikon would do this for a while, personally probably don't need f/2.8, I have iso performance of d700 to rely on anyways so not a big deal lol

you're absolutely right, although personally I don't know if I can justify spending that much for the lens if I don't think I'd use it a ton.

If it's announced, I'll also have the advantage of using and playing around with one to compare to a 2.8 vrii because I work at a camera store

yeah, it is a pricey lens, but you can find some for ~1800 used in excellent condition, which is fair.

and i'm sure you know that lenses rarely ever decrease in value, so re selling it is no biggie.

can't afford it. and it's not a very big deal for me but the f/4 should be quite a bit smaller

Let me repeat myself, not everyone is made of money, its hard for younger kids just to come up with an extra 800 bucks to buy a lens, they probably spend months just saving up 1000 for the f4 version.

so they don't need to sell and then upgrade later? or maybe they don't want to buy professional grade at all, now there is another option to get into a constant aperture telephoto zoom without spending 2k.

It's really large and heavy... and for example when shooting skiing you really don't need f/2.8...

Really excited about this lens. 70-200 f/2.8 is outside of the threshold of what I'm willing to lug around... This is going to be a great lens to take on the mountain...

The new Nikon 70-200mm f/4 lens that is expected to be announced next week will probably start shipping at the end of November, 2012. The price of the lens is expected to be in the $1,000-$1,300 range (depending on your local currency). I do not have the exact US price yet.

So it has been announced!

It's gonna retail for around $1,449.95 in Canada, I like this price.
