Advice/input on computer/software situation for my Canon 7D

I recently purchased a Canon 7D and it's awesome. I plan on using it this winter mostly for filming. I took some footage today of some friends biking and when I went to put it on my laptop (an HP Pavilion m6-1035dx) on Adobe Premiere Elements all of my footage was super choppy and the overall quality was shit. I filmed everything on 1080 30 fps. I don't know if it's my software i'm running or if my laptop can't handle the video files/Adobe (a pop-up told me i was using an entire CPU to run Adobe, with the choppy footage playing) Any advice or help? I would greatly appreciate it.

Sounds like your computer just can't handle editing canon h264 clips. Try encoding them to a more friendly codec like prores and see if that makes a difference. what are the stats on your computer?

Yeah, download the program MPEG Streampclip and then look up some standard formats you can convert you footage to for less CPU intensive editing. I'm not sure that your software handles 7d standard format natively (the only software I'm aware of that does handle h.264 natively is premier pro cs6). That should be a good start to solving the problem
