I prefer insulated. I have an Eider jacket with big armpit vents to dump tons of heat when I'm hiking or if it's a little warm. But if it's 45+ degrees (F, not C) then a shell jacket would be better.
I like shells because they are more versatile because I can layer underneath them. I have used both, and when it starts to get warm shells are much better, in the cold you just have to wear a fleece or hoodie underneath
Very well said although if you were to get an insulated coat such as FD you'd be fine they have great ventilation I luckily own both a shell and insulated and love both I'd just base it on your favorite design because really any coat should work for you!
Unless you're skinning somewhere, you really shouldn't need to completely drop layers during the day. If you're just skiing park, the layers you have on should last you the entire day. Also, pretty much all jackets have some level of venting.
Depends on where you live/ski, but I've found that I use a insulated jacket primarily for going out or around the town (also to/from work) but when I'm skiing, I'm moving around too much and end up not needing it, so I always ski with a shell & layers.
ya insulated is good for when your not skiing but i still do like it for skiing too because a lot of the time i just like to wear a shirt/t-shirt under my jacket
