Copyrights on ski edits

Basically, I need to know whether random ski footage from newschoolers videos is copyrighted. Can I cut and paste shots from different edits to make an advertisement?


The advertisement is for a college class, but has potential to be used in the real world.

If no, can you point me towards some dope uncopyrighted ski footage?

After reading your post, I got curious myself.

Scroll to the bottom of any Newschoolers page, click Terms of Use in the bottom right, and see item 2 paragraphs (a) and (i): "As a condition of using this site, you agree that you will not: ... (a) Without the prior written consent of Company, modify, distribute, transmit, display, perform, reproduce, publish, license, create derivative works of, transfer, or sell any Content... (i) Monitor or copy Content".

That being said, I'm still not sure if users forfeit their copyright privileges when they upload content. They are after all just terms of use for the website.

I'm also not sure if this applies to user-uploaded content. This questions may get some good input on the Site Discussion forum as well.

Others I'm sure will have more to say on the matter, from their own experiences or first-hand knowledge.

Let me know when you find footage on NS high quality enough to be used in the "real world," that's not shot and cut by Level 1, TSP, Poorboyz, etc.

Ya, I figure I'll just do that to be safe. I was just wondering if there was some sort of all encompassing copyright rule for the NS video section as I'm pretty uneducated about copyright law.

Haha, can I use your videos? Before you shut me down... the chance of the video becoming an actual advertisement is about 1 in 1000, because if my business proposal is chosen the angel investors will likely want professionally done advertisements and whatnot. Plus our proposal is kind of unrealistic.

I can say "All video shot by Evan Heath" or whatever if you'd like.

Don't worry about if for a school assignment. However, if it goes to broadcast, be prepared to get a ton of consent and permission forms filled out, and definitely be prepared to swap out footage.
