Feedback on my Ski Cine Reel?

Hi M&A,

Id love some feedback on my new Ski reel!

I made sure to upload many different copies of it to get feedback from other cinematographers before I posted the final version.

If I could get some feedback that would be awesome!

Pretty fuckin epic dude i liked it alot, the background music in the song i liked alot but when the guy started singing i didnt like it to much other than that everything was epic

i liked it. some sweet shots in there. love the silhouettes. i didn't like your "whoosh" sounds tho. i have used that exact same one in a couple of non ski related projects of my own and i just don't like the sound lol. the sounds you added of skis on snow when riders were going off jumps was a nice touch and the added sound out of the pipe was good, but like the sound of the guy flying over the knuckle was not as pleasing for me. especially since they were close together. you could have speed ramped those down a bit more i think. but really i think its too "whispy" and not enough "whooshy" if that makes sense. just personal opinion tho

other than that, shots were excellent

I was trying to think whether the 2.35:1 was relevant considering ski movies, or at least the ones I've seen are 16:9 but I decided fuck it, ski movies should be 2.35:1.

only gripe i have is this?

it seemed like you cut your shots before you showed a landing, like you were posting a trailer for a movie coming out. teasing to get you in before you close.

anybody else feel the same way?

what? how can you say that when 90% of every professional teams has their movies in 16:9?
2.35:1 isnt more right than 16:9 and opposite, when I see edits in 2.35:1 I always expect something very cinematic, Like this one and have you seen the eighty six? Personally I think both formats has their + and -, I dont think one of them is better than the other one, (my option of course, feel free to hate on me guys)

no i agree. this reel works great in 2.35:1 because 99% of the shots are framed just right with it, but then there are some edits that would just feel off if the werent in the regular 16:9

- You overused the "whoosh" sound effect way too much. It became distracting hearing the same audio clip used over and over.
- Fix the tracking on the titles.
- Other than that it was great!

So sick!! I really didn't find anything I didn't like about it, and I watched it three times now! Also I didn't think about those whoosh sounds being overused, I personally really liked theme.

Great stuff man. One of your best for sure.

Two things:
- When the beat drops at around 12 or 13 seconds, it takes half a second for the image to appear. Kinda annoying and I think it'd be better if the skiers on the top of the inrun would show when the beat drops, not a little after that
- I think there was a lack of tight shots. This isn't really reel related, but it's something I'm missing in general in your shots. Everything was shot from far a way with a telephoto, but not really tight. Only one of the shots at the end was a little tighter; something you could work on. I love tightly framed shots of skiers flying through the air with a sick grab.

Overall: good job!

Loved it! Great work.

I think audio is what needs to be worked on the most. Swooshing sound didn't quite fit in and there was something about that carving sound going off the jump that didn't quite fit.

Other than that it was incredible, especially considering your age.

after thinking about it some more, I think it was just too loud. If you were to lower the levels a little I think it would sound more natural

Baller! you have some talent for sure. Im curious to see what you can do outside of the skiing realm though! Keep it up you have a lot of years on most of us filmmakers, im impressed!

I know I said this is in the other thread....

i think this was so fucking good. Obviously as stated before, you could have done away with the loud whoosh noises. I loved the colors throughout as well..


for that shot with the pillows in it...did you just shoot neutral and desaturate in post?
