Need a new computer for editing!

my computer finally died yesterday..

and i need a new one for editing..

i have a budget of 1500-1750

it can't be a mac..

just start reading about it, I've heard that it is much easier than most people think.. and you get a much better computer for the price!

Still, make it yourself. It's very easy. I've never done it, but if you played with lego's a couple times you should be able to do it.
Nowadays, all components are made to fit perfectly on Mobo's (motherboards). Just buy all the components and click them into the mobo. Done.

you can build your own for like 700 that is just as good as the $1500 that brand names sell. It's realy not that hard. look it up.

and you'll learn it, and then learn to customize and have complete control of your machine

want to up your ram? not a problem. Need a new hard drive? GPU slowing your system down? boom upgrade

For editing? Definatly build your own machine.  You can get a super powerful one for only around $800.  It is actually fairly easy and is really fun.  Especially picking out your parts.



Super easy, and you can get all your parts online for pretty cheap.

your gonnna need to know more about it than the amount of ram and the warranty. The processor and GPU matter the most. You can always upgrade the ram yourself (extremely easily and for cheap - 40 bucks for 8 more gigs)

That computer seems good, but it has a GTX660m which is a mobile (laptop) graphics card. Is this an imac or something? I'd definitely recommend getting a normal desktop gpu. It will be much better.
The 660m is a great graphics card same with the i7 as a processor, but you could get MUCH better if you just built your own PC desktop for cheaper. It's your choice obviously though.

ehhh personally i steer clear from laptops. Especially building them. It's not like building desktops. they won't last nearly as long and the parts are more expensive and less efficient because of the whole issue of space. I assure you in 2 years that laptop will not be as fast as it was when you first got it. While a desktop that's treated well will with ease.

For $1500 you could build a beast of a machine.

You could prob get a 6 core i7, 32 gig of ram and a good nvidia GTX card.

I was weary of building a computer, I was worried about wasting loads of money if I messed it up, but it really is very easy. After you install the first component you realize its not that scary.

Watch these videos, they are some of the best tutorials on building a computer

I just bought myself a new laptop and did a bunch of research. If you want the best performance under $1000 then the Lenovo Y580 is going to be your best bet. $900 with quad core ivy bridge i7, GTX660m graphics, 15.6 1080p, great cooling, 7200rpm hdd, Blu ray which you can replace with a SSD. I personally would go for a cheap laptop with a dedicated gpu like the GT630m for $500 and then get a killer desktop build for like 800 or whatever your budget is.

Well a windows laptop with those specs, would be around $500-600 so really dont pay more then that or you could just buy new and get the same thing.

The programs are not really of any value so dont let that be part of the desicion.

for editing you'll want a quad i7 and a dedicated graphics card. Look at PCs with the GTX660m/670m/680m or the GT650m which is slower. For 1500 you can probably get a good high end gaming laptop with a good quad i7 and GDDR5 GPU.
Theres tons of options, just gont get a low end mac dual core integrated graphics.

Lenovo makes a pretty good laptop called the Y580 which has a 1080p screen, 7200rpm 750gb hdd, GTX660m, 2.8ghz quad i7 and 8 gigs of ram for only a little over 1000 bucks. Theres tons of options though in other brands like HP alienware, MSI, acer, asus, etc.

the gpu matters the most, they pretty much all have quad i7s if they're over $1000. You can also remove the optical drive if you want and replace it with a SSD to speed things up, or a secondary hdd.

Get yourself an 8 core. you can get a 3.6 GHz (overclocked to like 4.3) for llike $169 and just build your pc around that.

The current AMD 8 core processors suck big time. They require so much more voltage than the Intel counterparts.

Wait are you looking for a laptop or a desktop? IF you want a desktop then you should build it yourself (get a quad core ivy bridge). If you want a laptop then building it yourself it a pain in the ass. Are you looking to spend all $1500 or would you settle for something like $1000 if its good enough? You might have better luck going on a computer forum site like tomshardware.com.
What are some specifics you're looking for?

with a laptop the graphics card and processor matter the most. Look for a Nvidia GTX660m or 670m or 560m or one of those expensive high(-er) end cards. Integrated graphics are terrible. Nvidia graphics also work for GPU acceleration (CUDA) in premiere pro and after effects if you use those.

as i will be all winter long on it for editing, the laptop will need to be really fast for video editing..

i just don't know what to be, i can go from 1000 to 1750 but i want one of the greatest you can buy at this price!

is there some computer that are reputed for their editing performance or whatever?

Stay away from hp, they overheat/ have poor cooling. Newegg.com is your best bet for decent reviews and good pricing, i'm on mobile but will try to see whats good

I agree, hps are really bad with overheating. Newegg has some pretty good deals. I think lenovo y580 for $1100 has quad i7 ivy bridge 660m and 1080p 15 inch screen. really good build quality too. theres tons of choices tho

check out tomshardware.com its really useful forum site ask a question there too

So wait, why can it be a mac computer? for 1750 you can get a pretty solid MBP, which IMO are better than windows laptops anyday. I feel like the only advantage to a windows computer is if you can build it yourself.

use it to get reviews, or tomshardware.

I took a look, and basically you're picking between hard drive space, 8 or 12 gb memory, and some non-crucial features. They all run a 2.2-2.4 ghz i7 quad core in that price range, with all coming with at least 8gb ram. Get something with the best price and best reviews at that point, there's not a whole lot of variation between them

Newegg has great reviews. MSI computers are generally very good gaming computers. I dont have one but they're supposed to be pretty good quality. Basically a quad core i7 is going to be a given, you will want to check to see how much RAM you can upgrade to, since only 8gb is okay but you'd want to have it upgradable to 16gb. The graphics card matters a ton for gaming, and for openCL acceleration in the new CS6 software. Plus if you do and CAD (like 3d max, cinema 4d or blender) that completely runs on the GPU. Look for something with the best reviews on newegg/amazon and then check notebokcheck.net to see how the cpu/gpu preform. They have a listing of every single GPU available and their hierarchy, and CPUs.

I'd also install a SSD for booting instead of the optical drive (its extremely easy with some computers) and use the HDD as a storage drive.

I really recommend the lenovo y580 for its price. You can also make a thread on tomshardware.
What are some specifics you want in it? What programs are you going to be using for editing? Do you need it to be good battery life (eg if your going to school with it) do you want a good full HD matte ips screen? Do you need it to be really durable? Do you need a good keyboard and good speakers or do you not care about that?
