Thoughts on Sigma 17-70?

If an when I expand my lens quiver, I'm thinking about getting the Sigma f/2.8 17-70 in addition to a Tokina f/2.8 11-16 and probably an f/4 70-200L. I would get the Tamron 17-50, but I want to be able to fill in the 50-70 range.

Has anyone ever used this lens? Seems to get decent reviews on B&H.

the big advantage of the tamron 17-50 is the fixed f2.8 across the whole range, 17-70 is 2.8-4

I think the tamron is sharper, and it has a constant 2.8 aperture.
I wouldnt worry too much about the 50-70 mm range, you could just take a few steps;)

If you want a zoom lens that hits the 70-80 range get the 28-70 or 24-70L

The Sigma is sharper than the Tamron, if you can live with a variable aperture. A lot of newschoolers have a boner for the Tamron, but in fact this Sigma is a lot sharper. The f/2.8 aperture at the long end is a very good reason to prefer the Tamron over the Sigma though.

Both the Tamron and the Sigma have very questionable bokeh (quality of the out-of-focus background). If you can afford it you should indeed look into a 24-70, 17-55 or 24-105.
